Lieutenant Kantu began running his tests, and gathering his readings. Some of which were specifically designed to ensure that all of our technology is working properly.

Qech removed her tricorder from her bag as the runabout set down on the Planet's surface and clipped it on her belt, nodding in satisfaction as she did so.

"Nice landing, Ensign. Very smooth." She listened as a choppy static, barely noticeable as Uvek, hissed over the comm unit. She didn't have much hope that her reply would be any clearer than his was, but any message at all would be better than none.

"Columbia to Hartington. We have landed safely" she replied.

Ensign zh'Rel then spoke: "Commander, I'm picking up life signs, less than 5 km from our location. It appears that they're gathering near the Cardassian wreckage."

Qech leaned over the console from her place near the helm and examined the data. To her surprise, the life signs were varied. Only one Cardassian. The others were alien and unfamiliar to her. She entered the biological data into the computer, hoping the database would have some sort of backlog on the aliens, but the search came up short. She looked toward Ensign zh'Rel and raised an eyebrow. "Only one Cardassian. That might have been notable in your report, Ensign."

At the sound of her name being spoken, Qech then turned to face Petty Officer Koester.

"Commander. I'm gonna station myself in that rocky outcropping behind us. Can you delay movement long enough to watch my back while I get into position so I can cover you? I shouldn't require more than ten minutes to do so."

Qech nodded. "We'll set out in ten minutes, then. Be advised, everyone, at least 4 of the life signs are completely alien. We're dealing with an unknown species here, so we're walking in blind. Be ready for anything, but keep your weapons lowered."

Hearing Commander Qech's words (Alien? What did these humans think they were? Some kind of standard?) made em pay her a bit more attention.

E didn't't mind being thought of as silent, but being thought of as someone who got easily distracted (something which was untrue; Loraby just had so much mental traffic to keep up with that from time to time they seemed to be... off) was so unheard of for a Loráby that e wondered for a moment if so much contact with aliens was affecting em.

E checked es equipment and medical bag, and stood ready to follow any orders that could be forthcoming.

Ensign zh'Rel flushed a deeper shade of blue, embarrassed by her performance.

"Sorry Commander, won't happen again..."

She secured the console, rose to her feet and moved towards the aft section of the Runabout for her field supplies. She looked to Science Officer Kantu and his equipment. After hearing the broken message from the Hartington her antenna quivered ever so slightly, a sign of fear to those who knew anything about the Andorian people.

"Lieutenant, will that stuff let you know if our weapons and other gear is going to work out there?"

"I got your back Koester." Said Smith as Koester made his way up to the outcropping.

"Commander, once he's in position, I'll take point."

Once Koester was in position, he signaled down to Smith by giving him the thumbs up sign.

"Okay Commander, I'm on point. Follow me."

Smith and the away team began their movement toward the Cardassian encampment

"Lieutenant, will that stuff let you know if our weapons and other gear is going to work out there?"

"As of right now, our particle weapons need to be remodulated every 15 to 20 minutes. I'd like to figure out a way to lengthen that period of time. With luck we could improve communications with the Hartington as well."
He makes his way around the Away Team:
"Remember, if you start to feel excessive discomfort, use the Tri-ox."

He looks out to the horizon in the direction of the sole Cardassian.

Qech looked over her shoulder to the outcropping of rocks where Koester lay hidden and then back toward the eager security specialist, cocking an eyebrow.

"I appreciate your enthusiasm, Petty Officer Smith. Given your training, point guard is appropriate. However, I would appreciate that in the future you take up the position by request, not by self-appointment." She allowed herself a slight smile, however brief, and nodded in the direction of the crash site.

"I'm sorry Commander. This is my first command away team in some while, so I'm a little gung-ho."

Petty Officer Smith remembered that it wasn't that long ago that he'd had the opportunity to pull some Marines out of a bad spot with the Jem Hadar with some sharpshooting. He hoped it wasn't some sort of Post Traumatic Stress returning.

He put it to the back of his mind, and said "Commander, if you'd rather lead, I will follow."

ACTION

After several minutes of walking towards the crash site the Away Team's tricorders began to chirp out a warning. A half dozen life forms were converging on the team's location and quickly.

Cadet Azmáy stands back, ready to hold position if anything happens. E stands firm, but serene and relaxed. E checked again es medical tri-corder, just in case the computer could give em any new data, but tried to do it slowly (as not to make the aliens the tri-corder is a weapon).

OOC: I'm a bit intimidated by all your jargon. I'll try to follow you, but I can't promise anything.

(OOC: Sorry for the delay. I've been busy the last day or so).

Koester moved his thumb on the grip of the TR-116. He could see the six life forms approaching the away team. They were threatening but not hostile at the moment. The second they started to raise anything even remotely resembling a weapon though he'd let 'em have it.

He got onto his comm badge to Commander Qech.

"Commander don't have a visual yet but the second I do I'll track them in my sights. Just give me a code word if you want me to engage them." Koester said: "Otherwise I've got their point of convergence with you tracked on my headset. When they get within visual range I'll put my crosshairs on the leader..."

Qech regarded the life signs on her tricorder as they appeared, confused that the number was higher than the Columbia scanners had picked up. There's something odd going on here... she thought. As the away team drew closer, she gave the order to stop walking and stepped forward of Petty Officer Smith, nodding her respect for him as she did so.

Her Marine instincts provided by her previous host began to take over and she felt herself tense slightly in readiness for a possible skirmish; a feeling that was bolstered by a communication from Koester:

"Commander don't have a visual yet but the second I do I'll track them in my sights. Just give me a code word if you want me to engage them. Otherwise I've got their point of convergence with you tracked on my headset. When they get within visual range I'll put my crosshairs on the leader..."

Davynn was prepared for (and hoping for) a rescue mission, and she kept her phaser lowered in defiance of her defensive instincts. Still, this could always end badly... She tapped her combadge, and opened a channel to Petty Officer Koester.

"I'm counting more life signs than were initially scanned aboard the runabout. There may have been a malfunction, but be prepared for less than innocent explanations. I'm going to attempt to speak to them. If things get hairy, open fire on the word: Mark."

Assured that the approaching aliens were already well aware of their presence, Qech cleared her throat and threw her voice into the mist.

"I am Lieutenant Commander Qech of the USS Hartington. We're here in response to a distress signal that was dispatched from this area. We'd be glad to offer our aid if it is needed."

Watching and waiting, Qech barred herself against the silence and simply hoped that neither her Marine or medical training would be needed.

"Commander be advised I've got six more aliens approaching your position flanking the original group on both sides. No visuals yet but I've got you on visual. The second you guys make contact I'm putting my crosshairs onto the leader." Koester said after tapping his comm badge.

He held his trusty TR-116 steady and took aim on the first humanoid shape that approached the away team. His crosshairs centered directly on the being's center of mass.
