Warrant Officer Lawrence O'Dell stood at parade rest as the Cadets and Recruits filed into the room. This was his first day of training with the students aboard the Hartington and he wanted to make the lesson memorable.

Welcome to field training. You are each here because you have qualified for service aboard a starship. As of launch you are all considered to be on active Starfleet duty. Each of you has proven to be exceptional in terms of academic study, good enough to be given a much coveted post aboard this vessel.

The goal of these lessons will be to teach you all how to behave as members of Starfleet. Until your graduation you are all equal. Until your graduation you outrank no one. Those Cadets who hold a higher rank may be placed in command situations within the cadet squad, we will follow a strict chain of command. Officer-Cadet or Enlisted Crewman Recruit, it doesn't matter to me which you are, until you've graduated you're all the same. Am I understood?

Cadet Ázmay walks in, and stands ready for inspection.

Coming to think of it, Cadet Ázmay found the whole situation slightly amusing (but no sign of it could be seen on its face, unless the onlooker was another Loráby).

Lorábyn military traditions, most of which were in the harsh, stoic and unforgiving hands of the Zethny, were quite different to those of Starfleet. The concept of an army, of a strict chain of command... that was unknown to Ázmay, which before Loráb had joined the Federation had only served in the Civilian Forces... if that was the right translation.

But the Zethny were too xenophobic, and too strange (being similar to uptight flatworms or tapeworms (taenias), with two arms, two six-fingered hands (like Ázmay's), bodies ending in a long, muscular tail and a crested fin running along their spines), so... so far none had joined Starfleet. In fact, none had been seen outside Lorab itself.

Ázmay wanted to prove these odd, but admirable beings (with their men, and women, and their children, and their joy of living), that the Loráby were a race worthy of their respect and trust.

E stood under the gaze of Warrant Officer Lawrence O'Dell, opened es hands to show e was unarmed, adopted the correct posture, tilted es head to es side (in order to prevent looking down on the human) and looked at es officer with es featureless pale face and es deeply black almond-like eyes. Es olfactory feathers trembled slightly, tasting and analyzing the room's miriad of scents and smells.

Cadet Walters anxiously walked into the holodeck.
He was feeling good today. With all the traveling and stand-by during the transfer to the Hartington, he didn't really have the time to spend doing physical activities. Most of his free time had been dedicated to repeated study and memorization of various systems.

Obstacle courses, field training exercizes, physical training, was a big stress reliever for him, and he took perhaps more pride in it than his studies.

Walters steppped up to the line, awaiting orders.

Arriving just before WO O'Dell started speaking, Cadet Mehvra hurried to find a place in line. He had taken a wrong turn and had to consult a terminal for directions.

He risks a quick glance down the line at the others in the group trying to ascertain some information about them. It would be interesting, as always, to see how such a disparate group would work together.

He did however listen intently to WO O'Dell's address to them. As he finished he responds with a haughty, "Understood, sir!".

O'Dell nodded, seemingly approving of the student's reaction.

"Very good. Cadet Azmay, you'll be in command of the Cadet Squad for the time being. You may all decide for yourselves if you'd like to revise this at a later time, some squads rotate leadership so as to give the whole team a chance to make the big choices. Personally, I think that is a good plan. In any case, for this first mission, Mr. Azmay is in command. Computer: access program file Training-Alpha-One and begin."

The black and yellow hologrid vanished before the assembled's eyes and was replaced with the bridge of a Saber-class vessel. Small, sleek and elegant the Saber-class was designed for a small crew, exactly what the students were all faced with. O'Dell motioned to the stations around the small bridge and then to each student in turn.

"Cadet Walters, please take the helm and operations station, Cadet Mehvra-Kuplo on tactical, Crewman Trimbo will be assigned to the science station and Cadet Azmay, you will sit in the big chair. You are the crew of the USS Yeager on a standard patrol near the former Cardassian Demilitarized Zone. Take your stations, the simulation will begin shortly."

Cadet Ázmay walks to the Command Chair, and sits down as if it were some kind of fragil object. E stands back again, and looks around the chair, aparently looking for something. E sits down, and moves es weight around until e feels comfortable.

OOT: I have no idea how to do this! It's going to be fun. Very Happy

Walters was almost disappointed as he assumed his station and sat down.

O'Dell stepped outside of the Holodeck and into a conference room across the hall. He eased himself into a chair and activated a monitor that displayed the student's activity, hand hovering over the controls to begin the simulation. All he waited for now was for Cadet Mehvra and Crewman Trimbo to take their positions.

Mehvra moves over to tactical. He takes a look at the console scanning for any pertinent information. Everything is normal ... so far.

"Tactical is green for go."

Cadet Ázmay leaned forward, trying to remember es lessons on Command, at the Academy...

"Mr. Walters, please take us to impulse. Adopt an standard search and patrol route."

"Aye Aye, sir, underway at three-quarter impulse, initiating standard patrol patterns." Walters exclaimed as the ship moved ahead. He kept a careful eye on the controls, trying to anticipate what the holodeck's program was going to throw at them.

Remembering some of the concepts es Zethny tutors had taught em before going to the Academy, and smiling inwardly on recalling how useful they had been among so many aliens, Cadet Azmay continued:

"Steady and soft, Mr. Walters... think of it as a dance. We are on patrol, but make us fly as if we were drifting aimlessly. The audience should not see how much the dancer is controlling es movements, or the effect will be ruined."

E could, if just for a moment, see in es head the Hall of Virtue, where the aged Zethny Masters taught the Lorábyn young adults the Twelve Precepts, and showed them the Way of Harmony, not in words or in deeds, but both in words and deeds.

His fingers moving across the console, Mehv pulls up the data on the region of space they are tasked to patrol. He attempts to locate any possible trouble spots: those that would be difficult for sensors to get a good reading, those that would isolate them, or make it difficult to respond to any threats.
