"Captain, the Williamette will be out of danger in 2 minutes and we can begin the deflector modifications. Our sensor picture of the surface is already clearing up a bit but comms are still down. I'm coordinating with Science to make a detailed scan of the surface to try and ascertain the status of the away team."
As he finished, there was a slight shudder as the ship encountered some turbulence in the upper atmosphere. _________________

Croft made constant adjustments to ships thrusters, trying to minimize the load on the inertial dampeners. They were already running fifteen degrees hotter than normal, although power was currently steady.
"Lieutenant, you may want to take the opportunity to beam out the away team while your at it, the inertial dampeners won't take much more than fifteen minutes at this altitude."
Croft mentally cursed as another vibration was felt throughout the ship, stay together old girl _________________

"I'm routing more power to the SIF fields Lieutenant. That ought to give us some more time. Just do your best to avoid the roughest patches and we'll be fine."
"Captain, using the remaining atmospheric probes I've managed to open a comm channel to the away team. It's a bit staticy, but you have communications." _________________

As his bridge crew worked furiously to save the Willamette and the mission the Captain turned to address Lieutenant Calodan.
"What went wrong? Why was the Columbia able to travel to the surface without trouble but the Willamette nearly brought down in the same area? Aren't Runabouts designed for this kind of work?" _________________

"Yes Sir, they are. At this point, I cannot determine why the Columbia was able to travel without problems and the Williamette wasn't. As soon as they are downloaded, I'll have the computer go over the runabouts logs and see if there are any clues therein." _________________

He nods, accepting Calodan's report.
"Open a channel to the away team."
In moments, with the channel open the Captain calls out to his crewmen on the planet's surface.
"Hartington to Away Team. Commander Qech, report." _________________

The voice of Lieutenant Commander Qech rang out over the comm as she gave her report.
"We're under fire! They're using arrows! One Cardassian is accounted for, along with several others of an unknown species. We're retreating to the Columbia."
The Captain's fists balled up and he rose to his feet, moving towards Calodan and Croft's position at the front of the Bridge.
"How long would it take for us to beam the whole team, plus their Cardassian guest off of the surface?" _________________

Calodan looked at his console.
"Six, maybe seven minutes sir. The issue would be the Cardassians. We don't have a copy of their patterns stored in the computer. They would take the bulk of the transport time. Just the team, I could do it in three flat with some help from Lt. Ghan."
He began the preliminary process of punching through the interference to get a better signal on the away team.
"Sir, we may have another issue. Sensors are detecting an echo coming in range of the planet. Because of the interference, I can't be sure but it could be another ship." _________________

"Captain, Lt. Uvek reports," he started, standing at attention before his CO. "I regret to report that we were unable to comlete our mission. The runabout has suffered damage both externally and systems wide. Perhaps holding our position opened us up to unknown conditions in the atmosphere. Furthermore, we were unable to contact the away team or maintain communications with the Hartington." He watched the captain's face. "However, we did manage to identify 12 lifeforms moving in the direction of the away team, but were unable to either identify them or ascertain their intent. I assume full responsibility, the crew performed their tasks admirably and are to be commended."
He stood back, waiting for the captain's response. Given the immediate situation, he did not expect much, however, and prepared himself to assume the tactical station. IF the echo was another ship, it was time to prepare. |

McTavish followed Uvek out of the turbolift, pausing for a moment to survey the Bridge. It looked like Science was short handed. As McTavish headed across the deck he felt the Hartington shudder under him. He glanced at the Helm and silently wished the Lieutenant sitting there luck.
McTavish began going over the piles and piles of data the Science sensors had been collecting. |

ACTION
Lieutenant Calodan's identification of the sensor shadow proved accurate as from the far side of the Hartington's sensor range closed an alien vessel. Few details could be gathered from the initial sensor sweep, most likely from the interference of the planet. What was painfully clear was the ship's weapons status: Active.
The Captain's eyes narrowed as he contemplated the situation. Just what we needed, he thought to himself more enemies. He tapped his combadge and called out.
"Ambassador Rolen, please come to the bridge at once."
The delicate voice of the Vorta Ambassador sang back to those on the bridge.
"Of course Captain, I am on my way."
Captain Brennon looked back to Lieutenant Uvek and barked out his next commands.
"Lieutenant, shields up and bring weapons to standby. Try hailing them." _________________

McTavish immediately turned the Science sensor suite from scanning the planet with a broad beam scan to to a tighter focus on the immediate area of the Columbia and her quickly departing crew. With a majority of the science sensor array freed, McTavish turned a broad spectrum passive analysis on the approaching vessel.
The initial data was spotty at best but any data was better than what they had at the moment. McTavish set up feeds to send the slowly streaming data to Tactical, Operations and the Captains Chair.
McTavish allowed himself a small smile as the errant thought of *Out of the frying pain, and into the Fire* crossed his mind. |

Rolen steps off of the Turbolift out onto the bridge, his eyes turned to the viewscreen. His demeanor quickly shifted from the standard priggish lapsing momentarily into one of stone cold fear.
The Captain must have noticed this change in attitude. He moved over to the Ambassador and said,
"Friends of yours, Ambassador?"
Rolen shook his head from side to side, silent for a few moments longer before responding.
"No, Captain. I can assure you that these people are no friends of mine, nor will they every be. All Vorta field operatives are required to study what limited knowledge we have of these people. If I am not mistaken, these people are known as the Tal'harton. Tread carefully Captain, very little is known about them save that they do not tolerate the Vorta's belief in the Founder's divinity..."
Captain Brennon nodded and looked back to Lieutenant Uvek.
"Have they responded to our hails, Lieutenant?" _________________

"Captain, I'm detecting the runabout powering up and preparing for liftoff. I tried to update them with a situation report but I haven't been able to open a channel. It appears that communications to the surface are being intentionally dampened by our visitor out there." _________________
