Location: Runabout Willamette, Main Shuttlebay
Stardate: 53772.5

The Runabout Willamette sat prepped on the deck of the Main shuttle bay awaiting it's flight crew. An enhanced sensor and communications enhancement was being fitted to the ship as the away team arrived. In theory, this addition would help the team in its mission to reestablish contact with the team on the planet.

McTavish burst into the Shuttle Bay at almost a full run. He nearly collided with one of the enlisted personnel hurrying about the deck. McTavish forced himself to come to a complete stop and calm himself. McTavish inhaled and exhaled before adjusting his uniform making sure that the d'k tahg hung properly at his side. He smiled briefly as memories of his time on Qo'noS and his month aboard IKS Pagh flashed through his mind.
McTavish, humming a Klingon battle hymn, moved to the open hatch of the Willlamette. McTavish ran his hand over the hull before stepping inside the Runabout.
"Ensign McTavish, reporting as ordered."

Uvek acknowledged the ensign and turned to continued prepping the runabout's sensor package. Having not stopped by his quarters, he was the first onboard, which was the only way he would have had it. His mind and nerves were on full alert. He hadn't felt this way for a long time. There was a definite difference between holodeck missions and the real thing. This always got his blood pumping, and it was a good thing for him. It was something that he needed. For too long now he had been talking and training and preparing. Now it was action-time.

He leaned back in his chair as the other members of the team entered the shuttlebay and collected his thoughts. His focus became a small red light ahead and slightly above his line of sight. He zeroed in and within seconds achieved a level of calm. He held it until Ensign McTavish's movements broke thru, but it was enough. He was in control again.

"Ensign," he said, "If you cannot pilot, perhaps you will be so kind as to take that sensor station." He indicated the port sensor screen. "Perhaps we will be able to do some good together." He smiled, the only separation between him and his vulcan cousins.

"Lt Calodan to the Willamette. I'm prepping the sensor link to tie your systems into the Hartington. Please open a comm channel on Starfleet standard frequency 1438 and prepare it for bi-directional data transfer."

McTavish put his away bag into a handy storage locker, before sliding into the seat facing the port sensor screen.
"Senior Officers prerogative, Sir. Im a fair pilot should the need arise."
McTavish automatically returned the smile. This would take some getting used too. A Vulc...No! a Romulan! To McTavish that was more odd than a Vulcan smiling. Not only a Romulan Ally, but his Senior Officer on this mission. The smile turned into a grin, for a moment, as he could hear his grand father rant and rave over what sneaky bastards the Romulan's were.
"Aye, LT Calodan," McTavish's fingers slide across the control panel in front of him as he entered the proper commands. "Please confirm. Comm Channel, standard frequency 1438, prepped for bi-directional data transfer. Enhanced Sensor and Comms package online and functioning at 100%."

*commchirp*

"Thank you Ensign McTavish. Everything appears to be in working order. Safe journey."

Calodan closed the comm line and finished his prep to make sure that the sensor link would serve its purpose.

Uvek pulled up the crew manifest. Right now McTavish was the most qualified pilot. That was why the captain assigned him. Mentally Uvek kicked himself. He turned in his seat.

"Ensign, forgive me. While it behooves you to familiarize yourself with ship systems, it is no less important for me to understand the crew." He indicated the pilot seat.

"Please prepare to take us out of the shuttlebay. I will assign Cadet Walters to support our efforts, and use the engineers to clarify our communications with the ship."

"Aye aye Lieutenant." McTavish switched chairs and began bringing up navigational and helm information. "All systems online and looking good, Lieutenant. I have a Geo-synchronous orbit plotted into navigation. We should be directly over the Columbia a couple of minutes after we launch. Standing by for your word."

"Welcome aboard Cadet," replied Uvek. He waved a hand at the port sensor station. "Please take the sensor station, Mr. Walters. I'll have our engineer run the communications station here." He moved forward to the co-pilot's seat, and activated his control panel.

"Our engineer must have gotten lost," he observed wryly to his pilot. "Perhaps they could transport him onboard after we've departed."

He smiled slightly at his little inside joke. Despite his growing impatience at his tardy engineer, Uvek decided he would like Ensign McTavish. He had an easy smile and an open attitude about him that seemed to invite friendship. Uvek was not an easy man to know, and this experience was new to him, but he had studied the Federation for years, and he knew how to move among its members, if not be one himself. That, he decided, was at least a start.

"Computer" he said, "Locate Cadet Mehvro-kuplo."

As the computer answers, "Cadet Mehvra-Kuplo is in the Cadet Mehvra-Kuplo is in the Main Shuttlebay", he steps onboard.

"Cadet Mehvra-Kuplo, reporting, sir. You are correct, a took a wrong turn. Star-Fleet ships are laid out so differently than Grazerite buildings and ships. I haven't gotten accustomed to them yet."

Mehv takes a seat at comms and customizes the station to his liking, pulling up a small sub-section in order to monitor the vessel. After a few moments, "Comms ready, sir. Any specific orders?"

Uvek raised an eyebrow. To him it was a particularly vulcan thing to do, but he couldn't help himself, having done it for years.

"Unfamiliarity with your new post could be a dangerous thing for an engineering team member, Cadet." He started, "I suggest you concentrate on learning where your next emergency might be. There are areas all over this ship that may require your immediate attention in the near future and not knowing where something is could be fatal."

Having said that, he activated his comlink to the bridge. "Runabout Willamette is now ready for departure." That said, he turned to his pilot. "Ready when you are Ensign McTavish."

and the adventure began...

The words had barely left LT Uveks lips before McTavish had the runabout moving forward towards the opening shuttle bay doors.
McTavish tapped his comm badge "Ensign McTavish to COB. Reporting departure of USS Willamette. Four Souls aboard. LTJG Uvek in command."
A moment later, "Copy that Willamette. Four Souls. LTJG Uvek in command. Good Hunting Willamette."
McTavish smile spreads to a grin. If only Cadet Mehvra-Kuplo had of been a couple more minutes late he could have sent Cadet Walters to Chief Boats for 40 yards of gig line. Well, perhaps not. This mission was too time sensitive to send Cadets running around the ship on such pranks. Maybe later.
The runabout slid smoothly through the shuttle bay doors and out into space. The view was dominated by the Class-L planet below but by craning his neck a bit McTavish could gaze on the naked stars.

"… And though I had slain a thousand foes less one,
The thousandth knife had found my liver;
The thousandth enemy said to me

'Now you shall die, and none shall know.'

And the fool looking down believed this,
Not seeing, above his shoulder,
the naked stars,
Each one remembering"

McTavish's grin turned a bit sheepish as he turned to LT Uvek. "We will be in the plotted orbit in just under, 4 minutes, Sir."

Uvek responded with a nod, turning his attention to the view screen to his right. The grey-blue swirling mass of the planet loomed before them. His screens sought to cut through the mess of clouds, electrical discharge, and atmosphere with no luck.

"Cadet -Kuplo, keep an open channel to the Hartington at all times," he ordered, craning his head to see his teammates. "Cadet Walters, link your station with the probes, channel that detail to the Hartington as well. See if you can develop a sensor lock on the ground team."

"Ensign McTavish stand by for turbulence and the possibility of power loss. We may have to compensate for electrical interruptions."

He fingered the controls of his station, pulling the data stream from Walters' station onto his screen, which revealed exactly nothing. GREAT.
