Captain David Brennon stepped into his quarters, unzipping his uniform jacket in the process. His voice came groaning out of his mouth, the sign of a man clearly very tired... and why not? he mused, I've only been awake for the last 25 hours... a good night's rest will do me some good.

"Lights." he called out to the computer. He crossed his cabin, tossing his jacket down onto his desk as he passed on the way towards his replicator. His uniform vest was already coming undone as he ordered his dinner, a bowl of New England Clam Chowder and some Root Beer.

With his meal in hand he moved over to the desk, tapping the screen to life. Without his having to call out a command the computer began the playback of his most recent messages. The voice of his trusted Yeomen purred out over the computer, reminding her old friend of his schedule in the days to come.

"Remember Captain, you've scheduled a meeting with the new Counselor for the day after tomorrow... do not put this one off, sir."

David smiled to himself and shook his head. Very few people could ever get away with something like that... before his thoughts could turn down a path that he did not want them to go the chimes on his door rang out.

"It's open." the Captain called out by way of an invitation. He turned towards the door to greet his guest.

Qech wiped her now clammy palms off on her uniform before entering. It was going to be difficult getting a hold of herself when she knew she had every reason to be nervous. The promise of this conversation had been looming on the horizon like a dark cloud ever since she first checked in with the good Captain during Hartington's launch.

You can't put this off anymore, she told herself. This needs to be settled now.

As she stepped into the room she deeply regretted listening to her responsible side. The Captain was sitting at his desk, eating dinner and going over his messages. When he looked up she made one last attempt to stall for time before she could stop herself.

"I can come back, Sir, if this is a bad time..."

Great, Qech. Put this off some more. You'll make some good progress that way, I'm sure.

The Captain, oblivious to Qech's unease, shrugged his shoulders and wiped his mouth clean of the white chowder.

"Not at all, Commander. I was just going over some of my messages... M'Rowl seems to think that I'm not going to be visiting with the Counselor at my scheduled appointment, an insinuation I'm rather appalled by."

He cracked a grin and motioned for her to step the rest of the way into his quarters.

"Sit down," he offered, motioning towards a nearby chair. "What's on your mind, Commander?"

Qech sat in the chair offered to her, and just barely managed to stop herself from fidgeting. She couldn't, however, cease the habit of nervously biting her lip. When she caught herself doing it, she realized fidgeting would have been better; at least that wasn't a quark she picked up from his late wife...

Oh, where to begin... she thought, as he patiently waited for her to begin speaking. Finally, she cleared her throat.

"Sir, do you remember the day the Hartington launched? When we both decided that we would need to talk when the ship got underway? Well, I know things have been pretty hectic around here since day one, but I really think I've put this off a bit too long just the same. I apologize for that." She started biting her lip again, realized it, and immediately stopped. Gathering some new found composure, she sat up straight (curiously similar to a marine's posture) and folded her hands in her lap. "I just hope that my presence on this ship isn't a burden to you, Sir."

Captain Brennon sat back, setting his bowl down on the desk next to him. These things sneak right up on you, don't they? he thought to himself. He listened to his First Officer's uneasy speech, watched her fidget for a few moments before finally composing herself just like Ailis he thought, quickly banishing that into the back of his mind.

"I just hope that my presence on this ship isn't a burden to you, Sir."

David took several moments to respond, his mind weighing what she had said and what he had been feeling since meeting her. The first response in his mind was one of fear and an instant desire for this discussion to be over with. He wanted to say of course your presence is a burden, it bothers me to no end! How would you feel?" As soon as he thought it he scolded himself. She's served Starfleet well, this ship, me... she served Ailis' last wish not to let Qech die. That did it for him in the end.

"Commander, Davynn, Your not bothering me. Not by being here or not by serving so close to me. You've shown yourself to be a competent Officer and a damn fine XO. You're not a burden, not to anyone. I was worried, but I've had time to think about it. I think you've done exactly what you could be expected to do in this situation, more even. As awkward as this is for me I really can't imagine how you must be feeling..."

Qech let out a heavy sigh and focused her eyes on some random corner of the desk in front of her.

"Sir, to be honest, I wish I knew exactly how I was feeling. It's been difficult to single myself out from the crowd these days."

She shook her head and gave a nervous laugh, fighting the urge to bite her lip again- a fight she lost.

"It's funny... Taj, my fiance, has been joined for a lot longer than I have. And he always said that I would eventually, no matter how big the universe was and no matter how far away I was, run into someone from a previous life. He said that fate had an inescapable and cruel sense of humor in that regard... I thought he was kidding."

She forced herself to tear her eyes away from the desk and look back up to the Captain. It just didn't seem fair. Davynn had never had any problems getting to know people. In fact, she was often regarded as being a very personable person. But what do you do when you know everything about someone, right down to their boot size, and you've never met them before? How do you go about getting to know them then? Even worse, what do you do when bringing up any of this knowledge up would seem awkward, or even offensive? This emotional hurdle had to be jumped if she was going to be able to do her job. That's all there was to it.

Maybe I should try and level the playing field a little bit. He knows I have Ailis' memories, but he knows next to nothing about me, outside my Starfleet record... Yeah. I'll start there.

Her face set in a calm resolve, Qech finally looked her Captain in the eyes. "Sir, is there anything you'd like to know about me? My favorite color? My goldfish's name? Well, I can tell you right now... I don't actually have a goldfish... But I want one." She smiled, allowing her own personality- Davynn's personality- to shine through the cloud of reservations and doubt that had previously surrounded her.

It's good to be in the pilot's seat again. Maybe I can do this after all..."

He watched her speak, watched her fidget, watched the calm roll over her and eventually watched as she looked up into his eyes. Those aren't her eyes he told himself pointedly. He was right, too. Ailis had blue eyes where Davynn has green. That fact alone calmed him greatly... but he also felt a pang deep down somewhere within him, in the part of him that had held out hope that some part of his wife still lived on in this near stranger. Once more, he pushed the thoughts from his mind, focusing on the here and now.

"Sir, is there anything you'd like to know about me? My favorite color? My goldfish's name? Well, I can tell you right now... I don't actually have a goldfish... But I want one."

"Why?"

The question shot out before he knew what he had said, almost snickering as he did. His mind immediately raced to the obvious. What would she think I meant?

Qech didn't even pause before answering, dismissing the question's possible other meaning immediately. She might not have known him well enough to have figured it out, but thankfully... Ailis did.

Her face betrayed no expression when she replied:

"Because cats don't do so well in Zero-G, Sir."

"Because cats don't do so well in Zero-G, Sir."

At that, the Captain burst out laughing. She'll do he thought to himself as he picked up his glass of Root Beer, taking a sip. He shook his head as he eyed his First Officer for a few more moments of chuckling. As his laughter subsided he spoke again.

"You should get some rest, Commander... big day tomorrow."

Qech nodded as she stood up. "Yes Sir, I probably should. And you know it's only a matter of time before Yeomen M'rowl chimes in and more than suggests you do the same." She grinned, picturing the almost maternal Caitian in her mind's eye. "Maybe you should beat her to the punch."

Feeling slightly better about her situation she turned and headed toward the door, turning back momentarily to say good night.

"Thank you for seeing me Captain. Best of luck with the Yeomen." With that, she headed back to her quarters, wondering where she might procure a goldfish.
