Stardate: 53775 - during downtime between missions
Location: Counsellor Zeara's office

Uvek wrestled with the visit to the ship's counsellor. Romulans do not have counsellors, he thought, they have will power and strength of character. But after last night's dream, a near repeat of his earlier vision of destroying the Hartington, he no longer cared.

This was the Federation, and he could not cope with this new emotion welling inside him. It oozed through his sleep and into the waking world. It flooded him when he saw Korax, or an Adorian crewman or, well, anyone. He decided it was time to face it and discover what was happening to him. He had never felt like this before and, frankly, had slept soundly until his time aboard the Hartington. Now, he hardly slept at all. Vulcan techniques aside, he was barely holding himself together and had in fact snapped at Ensign Phell for a minor infraction.

Purposefully, he had avoided meditation this morning. He wanted all of this exposed and dealt with and Uvek, among other things, was brutally honest with himself. If he didn't deal with this now, he would go mad.

He approached the counsellor's office and pressed the chime.

Stardate: 53775

Sitting at her desk reviewing notes from her last session with Mr. Koester, she looked up as she felt a shift in the energies around her. Something whispered through her mind a moment before the chime for her door rang. She knew who was standing outside the door before the chime had gone off. the psychic signature that preluded him gave her a moment to retrieve the memory of information that had transfered between them upon first meeting.

"Enter Lieutenant"

as the doors pulled open she welcomed him with a warm smile as she stood to greet him.

"Greetings"

"Jolan Tru, Lieutenant." was the curt but courteous reply. Uvek moved into the office and sat, stiff and uncomfortable. After several minutes of silence, he realized the counselor was waiting for him to open. He breathed in, focusing on his thoughts.

"I appreciate you seeing me. I will admit I am not completely comfortable with this." he held her gaze and willed himself to be controlled but open.

Something was different about this one and, after reading her file (part of his security protocol) he knew she was empathetic and telepathic as well. While some parts of his mind would never open, couldn't open because of his past, he wanted help, so some parts had to.

"As you no doubt know, I have come here through betrayal. I have left off my Romulan heritage and entered Starfleet. However, I am unprepared for what is happening here. Hence, this appointment."

"I understand how difficult this is for you. I have little experience working with Romulans, and was quiet surprised to find there would be one aboard the ship." She shifted in her seat a bit uncomfortably as images she had recieved from him flashed through her mind and she had to take a deep breath to steady herself.

"As I'm sure you've had a chance to review my file, you will know what my qualifications are. So why don't you tell me the reason for your visit today?" she spoke hoping he hadn't picked up on her moment of struggle within herself. Something about him made it hard for her to focus at times... and she was not so happy about that.

Uvek looked to the porthole and out into the black of space for a time. Initially, he looked lost in thought, but nothing was radiating from him; that is, until he spoke.

"I was trained from a droakh," he looked at the counselor and smiled sheepishly, "I'm sorry, youth, that Romulans were self-sufficient. That we had strength of character and needed only rely upon ourselves and our will to overcome adversity. Later, during my service with the Romulan Defense Forces, I was trained that my actions were in support of the Star Empire and that what I did, I did for the common or greater good. Therefore, my actions were never questioned, nor regretted."

"However, I did perform questionable acts. Acts that have come full circle to me here in this environment." Uvek looked at his hands, his face flushing green. "I give orders, I demand people here understand their posts, control their emotions. I even strive to crush mine as I have done for many years. But it means nothing."

He visibly pulls himself up, a wave of shame and...what? There was no Romulan word for the emotion he was suddenly feeling. Emotions for the countless times he stole, lied, even dare he think it...killed.

"I must understand what this new emotion is. I must master it here and now, or I will not be effective in this post. I am asking for your help."

Sitting in her chair trying to hide the uncertainty she was feeling, she adjusted her position. She wasn't clear if it was her uncertainty or his. She really needed some work on filtering out the resdiual effects of a link.

Trying to keep her own voice steady she looked down at her hands qucikly then back up at the being in front of her. What was wrong with her today? She was never at a loss for words like this... get yourself together Rea... she mentally scolded herself.

"Well I know you understand what regret is, but perhaps it's a form of fear you're trying to cope with." Even as she spoke the words she could see the irratation on his face. She knew that Romulans were a proud race of beings, fear was not part of what they were. "Fear has many faces, most of them we never understand until we are consumed by them. I know you feel shame for what you've done, but there is a fear in shame. It's a fear that you cannot be forgiven for what you've done in your past, it's a fear that you cannont forgive yourself for what you've done." She took a deep breath trying to read him, but still overwhelmed by uncertainty. She made a mental note to spend some time in the holodeck working on her meditations.

"I am sorry to say that overcoming any obstacle is not an instant success. It does take time, though the amount of time is based on the individual." She looked at him then trying to read the various shifts in his facial expressions and emotional changes. This was definatly something she needed work with... Vulcans and Romulans had always been a weak spot for her.

"Curious." Replied Uvek. Fear was not what he expected. Guilt, as humans say, yes, fear no. Yet, it was possible. His fear of betraying this group he had sworn to protect and uphold. Was it possible the implications of Admiral Dwyer's intent had not sunk in until now? Did the Admiral know this would happen? He looked at the Counsellor.

"I understand fear as it pertains to environmental situations. I have been trained to deal with fear. Perhaps, though, I have fear of another sort, yes." He turned inward for a moment.

"Explain guilt to me, please." he said simply. "It is a concept I have been ignorant of, either through training or choice. It is also something the Romulan people have little concept of. I regret that I cannot discuss specifics with you that would cause me to seek out this term, but I feel it is imperative that I understand this and the possible fear you have mentioned."

she took a deep breath to prepare herself for this. Guilt. A term and emotion she was all to familiar with. She had hoped he'd accept her explination of fear and avoidance of guilt. The term itself made memories surface that she didn't relish the thought of revisitng.

"Guilt." she said quietly. "Guilt is not an easy emotion to explain. The only way I can find to explain it is..." she took a breath and looked away as though to search for the words. "When you've done something that you feel is wrong, and you know it is wrong, but you do it anyways and after it is done, the feeling you carry after makes you want to have never done it. This is what we call guilt." she stopped speaking at looked back at him again. "Does that make sense to you?" she asked with genuine confusion on her face. She'd never had to explain guilt before and was uncertain that her words carried the weight she hoped they did.

"I appologize if that's not the answer you are searching for, I've not had to explain such emotions in detail before." she said pursed her lips nervously before returning her expression to a calm collected one and gave him a soft smile.

"Yes." was the short answer. "However in my case I did not feel what I was doing at the time was wrong." he shook his head. "Perhaps my association here; seeing this crew as personally as I must, has colored my perception and brought forth that feeling."

Uvek stood abruptly. Flashes of past missions were coming out unbidden, threatening to spill into his conscious mind.

"Thank you counsellor." he said. "You have given me the focus I needed. I think I understand how this emotion, this guilt, has fed my fears. Indeed, my fears may be feeding that guilt."

He turned to the door, pausing long enough to turn to the shocked psychiatrist. "You have helped me immensely. However, at this junture, I am afraid my mental control may leak information to you that must remain...buried." like my victims... He passed out the door without waiting for a response, his mind burning with memories too close to the surface for his liking.

starting at his sudden stance she blinked a few times and looked up at him. She closed her eyes as she felt a wave of... something... threaten to consume her mind.

She heard the words he spoke but the ones that rang through the strongest were the ones he'd thought. Before she had a chance to speak he was walking out the door. She tried to follow him, but found herself suddenly dizzy and unable to stand. She had enough time to sit down in the chair at her desk, before the room went dark.

Stardate: 53775 - am - before Uvek's shift the day following the away mission.
Location: Counselor Zeara's office

*The door chimes and Uvek leans in without entering all the way....

He looked refreshed and rested and confident.

"Thank you Lieutenant," he said smoothly, "I believe the nightmares are over. My fear has been conquered."
