As the shuttlecraft neared the stardock, Marek found himself almost anxious to see his first command. Vulcan or not, he couldn't help but feel a little bit of emotion, especially with his mother's influence. The pilot of the shuttlecraft had apparently done this before, as he achieved perfect viewing distance and slowed the shuttlecraft slightly as he approached the Excelsior class starship.

"If you don't mind me saying so Captain, she's a fine ship. They don't make them like this anymore."

Marek just nodded to the ensign, looking back over the ship. Half a dozen "Worker Bee" support shuttles could be seen working around the ship, one was painting the ships designation, which currently said "USS Guard" with just barely a start on the "i". The ensign spoke again.

"I heard this is going to be the last Excelsior refit, most of the crew working the refit volunteered for duty, wanting to be part of history. Rumor has it that's why they are so far ahead of schedule." The ensign paused for a moment, then continued, "Captain, if I may be frank, " when Marek nodded he continued "I also heard you are still looking for crew, and I would be honored to serve on such a fine vessel. " He looked out the front window, not meeting Marek's gaze. "I realize my placement here is a punishment for insubordination, but I promise that if you give me a chance, I won't let you down, sir." Marek looked over the ensign, thoughtfully. He was obviously a competent pilot, but what had he done to deserve such an assignment? Marek pondered for a moment, then decided.

"What is your name, Ensign?" The ensign looked up hopefully.

"Tom, sir, Tom Fontaine."

"Mr. Fontaine, I could use a second watch helmsman, if you are willing."

The shuttlecraft touched down lightly in the shuttlebay.

"Yes sir! You won't regret this sir!" Marek was wondering, but he had a lot of positions yet to fill, and he was on a truncated time table. Willing volunteers couldn't be easily overlooked. He stepped out of the shuttle, expecting to be met by his new Yeomen. He looked at the smiling female ensign in front of him, surprised inwardly.
She appears to be Orion He thought, This should be... interesting.

OOC I'm going to take the opportunity to introduce some of the NPC's I've got lined up, set up the ship a little, if any of the current crew would like to jump in and introduce themselves, by all means please do so.

Location USS Guardian
Stardate (approx) 54367.3

Ensign Aloa Toka looked at the new Captain as he exited the shuttlecraft with excitement. It had been a rough road trying to get into Starfleet. With her heritage, there is always the ever present questions of what effect she would have on the other crew members. Even with her medical treatments, a human male that was not careful of his surroundings would find himself following her around like a lost puppy. She was not surprised at all to see her first assignment be under a Vulcan officer, in fact, she was quite relieved. She smiled brightly as the Captain looked at her.

"Welcome, Captain Marek. I am Ensign Toka, I'm your new Yeomen."

Marek smiled slightly for a moment, then spoke.

"Ensign Toka. " He nodded as Ensign Fontaine left the shuttle. "Ensign Fontaine, I will notify Starfleet Command of your new assignment shortly. Ensign Toka, I believe that first on the agenda is a tour of the ship?"

Toka kept her face impassive as Fontaine walked by, then smiled again at the Captain. Just like a Vulcan to get right down to business

"Of course Captain if you'll follow me."

She motioned to the access doors across the bay, then began walking.

"I thought you might like to see Main Engineering first, that's the most impressive upgrade they've made to the vessel, the new warp core." They left the shuttlebay, walking briskly down the hall.

Marek followed the Ensign, walking just slightly behind and to the side so as to be able to follow her lead.

"I understand they have completely replaced the old warp core with a more advanced system?"

Toka motioned for the Captain to enter the turbolift.

"Oh yes, it's rather impressive, especially considering how fast they did it. Computer, Main Engineering."

The lift hummed to life, speeding them towards there destination. Toka paused, wanting to wait to say more when they have made a dramatic entrance to Engineering. She couldn't help herself, the assignment was so exciting, exploring new space on such a unique vessel. She glanced at Marek, wondering just how stiff he would be. She had only dealt with two other Vulcans, and cold might have been the one word description she would have picked for either of them. Rumor has it he has a sense of humor, we can only hope she smiled to herself.

(OOC: As Chief Operations Officer, I would have actually been on board long before the captain, overseeing the refit of the computer core and systems configurations, so I will be on the bridge, awaiting the captain's arrival).

Stardate: 54367.3
Location: Bridge of the USS Guardian
Reporting as: Lt. Commander Roger Talbert - COO

Talbert noted the shuttle docking, as reported by the bridge watch officer. He turned to the console before him and tapped a switch.

"Comm, patch me through to the first officer." he ordered. He needed to alert staff that the captain was on board. Refit had gone well, and the older Excelsior looked better, and in fact was better, than ever.

He prepped the command deck for the arrival of the captain, and turned his attention to the engineering team. "All right people," he bellowed, "Captain's on board! Let's look alive. Get that omni-wiring stashed, secure that conduit latch, move that tricorder out of the way!"

The crew snapped into higher gear. With 'the Whip' cracking, there was little humor to be found, and less downtime.

Character: Commander Gaer, Executive Officer
Location: Main Bridge, USS Guardian
Stardate: 54367.3

Commander Morbren Gaer stepped off of the turbolift and onto the Main Bridge just in time to hear Lieutenant Commander Talbert "cracking the whip".

"All right people, Captain's on board! Let's look alive. Get that omni-wiring stashed, secure that conduit latch, move that tricorder out of the way!"

The Tellarite let out a snort-like harrumph as he heard the Human calling out to ready the crew. Not as disorderly as most I've known... the Commander thought to himself as he stepped around the bridge of the Guardian. A former Engineer himself, Gaer had to appreciate the technical work that had recently been done to the ship. He tapped his porcine fingers across the ship's tactical console, looking over the modifications made. He nodded in approval and continued his look around the bridge, finally stopping in front of the Operations Officer.

"Commander Talbert, I presume?"

Talbert swung around and faced a shorter, gruff looking Tellerite. He burst into a wide grin, and extended his hand. His limited knowledge of Tellerites did not hinder his immediate assessment of the man before him. Sharp, organized, professional. Just so. They should get along well.

"Commander Gaer!" he said with surprise. Turning his head slightly to comm he said "disregard that order, ensign. I think he knows."

"Pleasure to meet you, sir. We're just wrapping things up here." He interrupted himself by looking over to the main viewer, "OK, OK," He snapped off, "The screen's clean! MOVE ON!" Then back to his XO.

"Sorry, sir. I think we are as ready as we can be."

The Commander eyed the hand shoved out towards him with wide black eyes. Of course... he reminded himself They feel the need to touch hands when they greet each other. Gaer reached out slowly with his own hand and took Talbert's. At the same time he did his best approximation of a human smile... not a pleasant prospect as many Male Tellarites -- including this one -- have small tusks, a genetic throwback to a bygone age. After a moment the First Officer let the Human go and nodded.

"All appears in order, Commander. So long as she is ship shape and ready to fly when the Captain gives the word."

Character: PO1 Jeem Roekil - Security officer
Stardate: 54367.3
Location: Bridge of the USS Guardian, Temporary Security Station.

Roekil was standing as out of the way as a male Brikar could in a flurry of activity. He had taken over the third science station, and with a little help from one of the crewmen working, had temporarily converted it into a shipboard security scanner. Until the Chief of Security reported aboard, he was the acting-Chief Security Officer on the ship and he wasn't one to let duty slip. He was doing his best to monitor shipboard security, without letting his bulk block the main viewer that was directly to his left. Starfleet had yet to design a station that could accommodate a 600lb man.

"Sirs," he said, speaking to both Commanders Gaer and Talbert. His voice, unsurprising given that his flesh looked like living rock, sounded like gravel being poured over itself. "It appears the Captain is starting his tour from Engineering. Security logs show he reported there two minutes ago."

Character: Lt. Sula Uroki
Stardate: 54367.3
Location: Bridge of the USS Guardian

Sula found herself immediately wandering the now bustling ship from the moment she stepped foot on its refitted decks. She tried to confine herself in sickbay, organizing and reorganizing the equipment to her liking, but she found she just couldn't sit still with so much energy around. She wandered the hallways, jovially greeting every new stranger, or familiar face that came her way. Eventually, she found herself on the bridge.

She took a deep breath, inhaling the smell of fresh paint and freshly laid carpet. She looked around for anyone she might have been familiar with, and it didn't take her very long to find one. She strode briskly up to the first officer, extending her sapphire-blue hand in greeting.

"Commander Gaer! How good to see you again! Do you remember me? Sula? Sula Uroki? We attended the academy together. Good times then, good times. You haven't changed a bit! And I never forget a face. And if I recall, you were one of my very first patients weren't you? Yes, I remember, an inflammatory/remitting cyst on the bottom of your left foot. You know, it was always the funniest thing to me that it seemed to be shaped like a Starship of all things! I should have known I'd find you here. So! How have you been? How have you been? Next time you're off duty, we'll need to... What's that human expression? 'Chew the fat?' A little off-color for an expression, but I'll take it at face-value."

Finally, she took a breath. But it was a very quick one-

"Oh! I just remembered! I should be insulting you, shouldn't I? You Tellerites, you like that, don't you? Well, let me see, umm... Oh! You're looking very... Fat! You look fat today, Sir! So, can you introduce me around? I love to meet new people!"

The somewhat dumpy little Bolian didn't even register the ambushed Tellerite's slackened expression as she smiled up at him, her hand still firmly clasped around his in what was a surprisingly tight grip.

Commander paused a moment before answering, regarding the security man. Damn, he thought, how far is Starfleet going these days?

He nodded, "Thank you Mr. Roekil. Let us know when the party moves toward the bridge." He turned back to Gaer, still uncertain how to handle such a large and obviously out-of-place creature. Creature, no, he corrected himself. This is a member of Starfleet and an officer to boot. Whatever else he was, he had proven himself this far.

"Crewman!" he shouted, his attention drawn to the team wrapping up the prep work here. "Get that PADD of the Captain's chair. Have you lost your mind?" He moved down. Physically, Talbert was impressive. Stocky, muscular and thick-necked, he was even more impressive for his booming voice, used to effectively scare the crap out of lower ranks.

Gaer and Roekil forgotten, Talbert moved from station-to-station, ensuring all units were operational and ready for the C-in-C.

Location Main Engineering
Stardate, supplemental (ie see above)

Toka smiles as the turbolift doors open. What looks to be fifteen or twenty crewmen are hurrying about.

"I'm not an Engineer, but that's always looked pretty impressive to me."

Marek had served on Excelsior class ships before, but the warp core they had retrofit for this ship looked unlike anything he had every seen. It was either a greatly increased in size class 7 or a reduced class 8, either way, it was quite a bit larger than the original core.

"I have not seen a tactical readout of this vessel as of yet, but it appears that it must have upgraded defensive systems far exceeding what I expected."

Toka motioned towards the core.

"Every ship system has had a major upgrade, greatly increasing the ship's power requirements," She pauses, "I'm sure the Chief Engineer can give you all the details, or Admiral Croft, he's expecting to hear from you as soon as possible."

Marek decided that some initiative was in order.

"Seeing that the Admiral is waiting, perhaps we should head to the bridge?" He motioned toward the turbolift doors. He noticed that she appeared to blush, it was hard to tell with her green skin, then stepped into the turbolift as the doors slid back open. Marek stepped inside, and spoke before the Ensign could recover.

"Computer, Main Bridge." It only took a moment for the turbo lift to arrive, the doors slid open, and Marek stepped onto a rather busy looking bridge.

As the Captain stepped onto the Bridge and the Bridge Crew snapped to attention an access panel above Science 1 swung open spilling conduit over the console. Roughly half the conduit was dark while the rest was pulsing with power. A Vulcan male followed the conduit, though the Vulcan made his decent far more acrobatic. The Vulcan was dressed not in a uniform but in engineering coveralls. Coveralls bulging with test equipment and various probes, and covered in blobs and stains. The Vulcans left ear likewise was blackened.

The Vulcan saw the Captain leave the turbo lift, He stood to attention. "Captain on the Bridge!"

OOC: Its actually PO1 Roekil. Cpt Marek and I did some work on shifting my rank about to fit better in the scheme of things. I wanted to try my chops at saluting more then being saluted as on the Big H.

Character: PO1 Jeem Roekil - Security officer

"Commander," Roekil raised his voice to be heard over the din and misjudged his own volume. His sharp report echoed off of the walls of the bridge and several crewmen cringed and grabbed at their ears. He shrugged his mountainish shoulders and continued, albeit in a lower volume. "The Captain is in a turbolift on the way to the bridge."

As he made his report, all hell seemed to break loose..just as the Captain entered the bridge. The Brikar barely managed to step aside as the conduit spilled into the room, followed shortly by the Vulcan Engineer.

"Captain on the Bridge!"

He came to attention so show respect for his new Captain. He knew the man had taken a risk having him on his crew, his record was far less then stellar, and he had resolved himself to make this assignment better then that last. He was only Brikarian currently in Starfleet and he was determined to make the best of it, no matter how hard everyone else seemed to make that task.

Stardate: 54367.3
Location: Shuttlebay - USS Guardian
Reporting as Ensign Stephen Daniels - Communications Specialist

Daniels stepped off the shuttle along with a handful of other ship experts. He stretched and then caught the eye of a female crewman. "Hey doll," he called out, putting on his best rascal's smile, "Can you help me?" The crewman approached and smiled back at the 'roguish' lieutenant.

"Get an anti-grav platform and deliver this to medical immediately." He slapped the System 921 case on the deck. Then, winking at the crewmen, he hefted his duffel bag and a small valise-like case and moved to the nearest turbolift.

"Deck 3" he called out. Might as well store this stuff before it draws too much attention, he thought. Daniels wondered what his captain would be like to work for. Vulcans were notoriously hard to get along with. Fortunately for Daniels, he did not need to get along with his CO, just support him. That should be easier than the Operations Officer. He had heard horror stories about 'The Whip', and just knew he would hate the COO. Oh well.

In his quarters he dumped his duffel on the bed, and then moved to the nearest counter. In no time he had 4 bottles of Glen Livet, 2 bottles of Makers Mark whiskey, and 2 bottles of genuine Rihannsu aiylil stored away, along with a complete crystal bar set. Then, satisfied, he headed again for the turbolift and, ultimately, the bridge. Might as well get this over with, he thought. Besides, the sooner he reports, the sooner he can have a drink with that little crewman he met on the shuttledeck. This might be a great assignment, after all. With a smile pasted on his face, he stepped in and sent the lift flying to the command deck.

Marek watches as power conduit, then a Vulcan in coveralls falls from an overhead compartment.
"Captain on the Bridge!"

A quick glance shows what appears to be most of the assigned senior staff assembled, with what would likely be a comical array of looks on their faces if he was human. Marek glanced back at Ensign Toka, but she seemed to momentarily shocked at the commotion on the bridge. Perhaps I should rock the boat a little more

"Status report, we are supposed to be departing for Deep Space 9 at 0900 hours tomorrow."

OOC The Guardian will rendevous with the Hartington, so any personnel transfer can happen then.

Talbert stepped forward, inwardly cursing the vulcan engineer and the abrupt interruption of his work.

"Captain, operations reporting." he started, "Despite the...appearance of this conduit, the bridge stands ready. Stations are online. The new computer core has been run through refit drills for 2 weeks now. I cannot verify tactical readiness beyond telling you that the interactions will be smooth between stations. I will leave each station to report."

He stepped back and motioned for another engineer crewman to move in and help get the conduit back.
