A message was sent to the computer console in every crew members quarters. The text was as follows:

=^=INCOMING MESSAGE=^=
Classification Level 0
Subject: Rankless poker game

Message:
You are invited to the first poker game of the USS Hartington crew. This is a rankless game, meaning where your casual clothing and leave your pips in your quarters.

We will be meeting in Holodeck 1 at 2030 hours. The game is Earth-style Texas Hold'em. Those without experience are just as welcome, the first couple hands will be learning hands for everyone. I've attached the rules and a strategy guide to this message for everyone to brush up.

Jim Calodan

END MESSAGE

Uvek was in his quarters, following the meeting with Rolen and Commander Qech. He was tired and showered again just to remove the greasy feeling he had from dealing with the Dominion representative.

He checked his computer and retreived the messages. So far Rolen was behaving himself, as revealed by the security scan. There was also a message from Calodan. Intriquing, he thought. I can see this being a good opportunity to building a team here. He hit the response button, and RSVP'd in the positive. Should be quite amusing. He changed into a Romjulan sarong, a short casual robe, with leggings and a pair of sandals.

Thus fixed, he headed to the meet...game.

Character: Arjim Calodan
2015 Hours
Deck 6 - Holodeck 1

Calodan was putting the finishing touches on his Hold 'Em program, a hold over from his time on the Hood. He tapped the commands to activate the program and walked into the holodeck. Immediately, the atmosphere changed to that of Earth's Las Vegas from the 1960s. On stage was a lounge act, singing show tunes and all around there was the hustle and bustle of a casino. Directly ahead, there was a poker table and a dealer, waiting for play to begin. Calodan began walking towards the table and was stopped by a man in a suit. His nametag read "Vince, Pit Boss".

"Eh, buddy. I dunno what you're trying to pull, but this is a classy establishment. We don't just let guys stroll in off the street in their pajamas."

Calodan paused and looked down, he was still in uniform. "Computer, pause program. Replicate period dress for a man of this era and apply it to myself." There was a hum and Calodan was wearing a tuxedo, perfectly blending in with crowd around him. "Computer, when the crew begin to show up, any of them that won't match the dress code, replicate period clothing for them as well. Resume program." The noise of the casino resumed and Calodan took a drink from a passing cocktail waitress. This was shaping up to be a good time.

2015 Hours
Deck 6 - Holodeck 1

Uvek walked through the door of the holodeck and stopped short. His sarong had been replaced by a tight fitting outfit of black-and-white. His collar choked him, and the whole ensemble was thoroughly uncomfortable. However, he had purposed within himself that he would get to know the team he was with. He walked into the room, surveying with some humor the spread before him. Curious, he thought.

He approached Lt. Calodan. "Mr. Calodan, thank you for your gracious invitation. I look forward to this endeavor."

"You're welcome for the invite, and please..while we're here call me Jim." He extended his hand to Uvek.

"Sorry for the change of wardrobe, part of the atmosphere. If it gets too much, you can ask the computer to adjust it."

Uvek looked at the extended hand, briefly, then took it graciously. "Very well, Jim. And no I will not adjust this outfit. I believe it will bring me luck." He smiled and turned to the bar to wait for the remaining players, whomever they might be.

Ensign balim Fastaten entered the room, and looked surprisingly... good in the... thing (was tuxedo the word?) that the computer applied to es image.

E nodded to both the Romulan and Trill officers.

"This one hopes you won't think e is intruding. E has done some reading on poker, and it sounds intriguing... even if e must say that es people do not, usually, play games of skill and chance with cards"

E extended es six-fingered, two-thumbered right hand to Lt. Calodan and Lt. Suran.

"We don't either, as a whole, touch as a greeting. But it seems it is a common gesture, so this one is willing to give it a chance"

"You are not intruding at all. Everyone was invited and is welcome. This is a game for fun and to get to know each other better." He paused as the Lorab extended his hand to him and explained that this would be his first handshake. "I appreciate the gesture..." he paused for a second, "Please forgive me, I'm unsure of how to address you." He grasped the offered hand and shook it. "During poker night, I ask that you call me Jim. It is a nickname of sorts, and I feel setting myself on equal ground with everyone around me helps to build a sense of commonality."

McTavish stood in the sonic shower, set so high you could see the skin of his chest and back ripple under the blast. His head had slowly begun to clear after leaving the debriefing, so much psychic activity. Maybe he should consult the counselor about exercises to build up his mental strength.
The chrono on the wall beeped, time to hit the holodeck and see if he could still play poker. McTavish shut down the shower and went to his closet for a fresh uniform.

***
McTavish walked into the holodeck and stopped a moment to let the program make what ever adjustments it needed to make, McTavish could see the other officers gathering at a table towards the back of the room. To the left were rows of Poker, Black Jack, Craps, and other games of chance. To the right a lounge act was singing. McTavish wasnt familiar with the song but the small crowded seemed to swoon everytime the singer shook his hips. The dancers behind the singer where an interesting mix for the back ground, especially the klingon woman with the sliver feathered head dress and little else.
McTavish allowed his grin to spread as he noticed the black on black motif. He headed to the back table.
"Hello Jim, Ensign, Lieutenant.", McTavish nodded to each in turn, before taking a seat.

Calodan smiled as McTavish entered the room. "Have a seat. We're just finishing a hand and can deal you in."

As McTavish sat down, a small stack of holographic poker chips shimmered into existence in front of him.

"The game is Texas Hold 'em. Blinds are 10 and 20, raised each time a player goes out. These are just warm up hands, hoping a few more people show. You guys will get the jump on the others, getting to watch each other play." After his short description, the holographic dealer expertly flipped cards out to each player. A quick peek showed a pair of queens. Tonight was shaping up to be lucky indeed.

Mctavish glanced at his 2 4 off suit before folding.

After returning from the evening's... interrogative proceedings, Qech settled down behind her desk and activated the incoming message from Lt. Calodan. A smile crossed her face as she went over the text. She'd been wanting a real chance to get to know the crew, and this was the perfect opportunity. In her case, throwing away her rank for the evening would be a welcome benefit in that endeavor. Not wanting to be late, she quickly changed into some casual clothes and pulled the elastic out of her hair, letting it fall down onto her shoulders. She felt better already.

When she got to the holosuite she was met with a bit of a surprise. Her slacks and loose pullover had become a particularly sparkly red dress, with a bit less backing than she would normally like... In fact, there didn't seem to be a back. She shrugged, letting it go in favor of atmosphere, and smiled to Calodan as she approached the table.

"Nice Set up, Arjim, is it?" She smiled, and put an arm on his shoulder, pulling him to the side a little bit in confidence. "I'm going to confide in you something that breaks my heart to admit, but since you'd end up using it against me anyway..." She smile never faltered, showing that she was, for the most part, kidding. "I'm going to tell you a story about a girl who was actually quite good at this game... And then she was joined with the memories of a world-class championship games nut, and found she was very good at the game... Except for one thing..." she pointed to her lip. "Thanks to my previous host, I have a rotten tell. This kills me every time." She laughed. "I'm only telling you this because it would become apparent anyway. But I'll make you a deal; you help me kick this little habit, and I'll give you a run for your money." She grinned and put her hands on her hips.

Tell or no tell, I'm going to enjoy this evening no matter what.

Xavier Croft stood just outside the holosuite, his hand half way raised to the control panel. He dropped it, raised it, dropped it again. Who's going to want to play poker with a telepath? Doesn't matter if it's a crappy one, they'll think I'm either cheating or losing on purpose. Croft took a deep breath, closing his eyes. Turning over a new leaf, remember? He took one more deep breath, then entered the room. He glanced down at the tuxedo, glanced around the busy room, then walked over to where Qech and Calodan seem deep in conversation.

"Hey, got room for one more?"

walking down the hall to the holodeck and finishing the braid in her hair, she had to smile to herself. She hadn't played poker in so long she wasn't sure she'd remember it all. Her parents on Earth were quite fond of the game and taught her well. Five card was her strong suit, but Hold em worked for her as well. Standing outside the holodeck door, something occured to her.

as a telepath, will they even allow me to join the game? More importantly, as their counselor, will they allow me to join?

Shrugging her shoulders and figuring she had to at least give it a try, she entered the holodeck and was stopped at the site before her. She had vauge memories of Las Vegas, some even gathered from other people's minds... but this... this was wonderful to see. Her dress was changed to deep green satin that was tightly formed to her body. The back was high, the neck entirely to low for her liking and the slit up the side didn't comfort her either. if this is what's appropriate, I'll wear it... she thought and noticed that the computer had even changed her hair. Her long red tresses were pulled back, yet still hanging down her backline.

Walking up to the table where it seemed several people were already playing she stopped behind an empty chair. She suddenly felt rather nervous as they looked up at her. Clamping her mental walls tight, she just hoped her voice didn't shake as she spoke.

"Greetings, mind if I join?"

"Everyone is welcome." Calodan said to the new arrivals. "Pull up a chair wherever you see fit. Sorry about the outfits, I coded the atmosphere a bit over zealously. The computer can adjust them as needed. Drinks are on the house, tell them to put them on Jim's tab."

"I'm only telling you this because it would become apparent anyway. But I'll make you a deal; you help me kick this little habit, and I'll give you a run for your money."

"Well, that is a rotten tell. Best advice I can give you on that is to smile the whole time. It'll make it harder to catch." He smiled at her, "See, now you can't tell what I'm holding. And please, call me Jim. I try to be very informal, from my experience it helps the crew get to know each other and work together." He slid a chair out for Qech that was right beside his and gestured for a cocktail waitress to come over to take drink orders.

"Alright folks, game is Texas Hold 'Em, Earth style. Aces are high, blinds are 10 and 20 and no checking, either bet or fold out. Our dealer tonight is Vince and if you're nice to him, he'll treat you right. Won't you Vince?" The hologram in the dealer's uniform just shrugged, and started dealing cards around the table.
