Location: Deck 15 - Crew Lounge
Reporting as: Uvek

"Thei'khaiell ssuin hw'aenevha " said Uvek quietly, raising his hands above his head, his body sitting with crossed legs. He was in a corner of the crew lounge, wearing a long flowing grey robe and sandals, and facing away from anyone in the room.

"Kholairlh-a ihir hann'yyo'ir - Elements be thanked," he said, still quietly. He was lifting a small candle, and waving it in the air. His eyes were closed and he seemed completely unaware that he was, in fact, in a very public place. "Khlinae Arhem - Thank You," he continued, "for such a pleasant and safe experience within the wide universe. We urge you to provide safe passage, Elements, and oversee our leadership with greatness and serenity."

He brought the candle close, as if breathing in the fire of it, and then gently blew it out. A moment later he arose, bowed to the corner of the room, and turned. Motioning to the attendant, he ordered a bowl of Gletten, and seated himself, nodding to some crewmen who were watching his public scene with a mix of humor and curiosity.

(OOC: Anyone feel free if they want, to interact with Uvek at this point. I thought, the new post being at the first of the year, that this would be a good moment to build our rapport as a crew!)

Uvek's gletten arrived and he received it well. He wasn't a religious man by any means, and his years in the Tal Shiar had done much to crush whatever teachings he had received but, since arriving on the Hartington, he had been bombarded with a myriad of cultures and ideals. The end result was that he was becoming aware of memories and thoughts of ch'Rihan again.

He had spent the last month reconstructing his Rihannsu faith and thoughts, and had even redeveloped a basic understanding of his childhood teachings of the Elements. Fire, unpredictable and unstoppable, had long been his household's charm. Now, in strange space, surrounded by strange cultures and thought, Uvek was reawakening. Moreover, the Terran members of the crew were talking about Christmas and the holidays. Strange terms, to be sure, but their thoughts seemed to turn to Earth. For whatever reason, this spawned a desire in Uvek to publically thank his Element for their peaceful passage these many weeks.

Now he sat, eating his Romulan soup, and feeling quite pleased with himself, and even a little nostalgic.

Ensign Azmay looked at Lt. Uvek with curiosity, and approached him:

"Liutenant... would you mind this one asking you what you are doing? Some kind of ritual, that much this one can see, but... what for?"

McTavish stood respectfully, watching as Uvek completed his ceremony. A look of sadness crossed his face for a moment before his smile resurfaced.
When Uvek ordered Gletten McTavish did likewise, and sat as Uvek did.

McTavish grinned at Azmay's increasing openness, sliding a package papered with gold glossy paper toward Uvek and another papered in blue towards Azmay.

Ensign Azmay sat the way the Human and the Romulan did, and looked with curiosity at the package McTavish had slided towards em:

"What is this for, Ensign?"

"Its an ancient Earth custom to exchange gifts on the 25th day of December. In the beginning it was to celebrate the birth of one of the major religious figures, Then it was less a celebration of religion and more an economic event much like Halloween and Thanksgiving. For me and my family it was a time to get together and exchange news, eat wonderful food and exchange gifts."
McTavish continued to grin as he looked between Azmay and Uvek. The concept of Halloween had been particularly difficult for the two to accept.

Uvek looked curiously at the package before him, then from one to the other of his companions.

"Thank you, Ensign," he said to McTavish. He liked McTavish, something about his demeanor seemed easy to accept. He was a quintissential human, it seemed to Uvek, full of hope and humor. "I am afraid I am not accustomed to this honor, but I appreciate it nonetheless."

He turned to Azmay. "When I was a Droak'h, a young Romulan, I was taught to say thanks to the Elements. Romulan people believe that the Elements guide certain aspects of our lives. That they interact with the Universe and it, in turn, interacts with the Elements. They all seem to work together to our good." He smiled at once ironically and sadly.

"I regret my service over the past years has taken me from this custom. However, it is a practice to be performed publically if you wish the Elements to extend themselves to those you travel with."

"And you, Mr. Azmay," he inquired, "Does your race have such customs?"

After Azmay was finished speaking, Uvek looked at McTavish with a look of curiosity on his face. The ensign motioned to the gift with wave and smile, so Uvek began carefully unwrapping it.

Finally, after minutes of carefully pulling tightly taped paper, a small box revealed itself. Within was a large fish-like object with sharp barbed hooks on various points of its garish green and pink body.

Uvek carefully picked it up and looked at it, then at the Terran officer.

"I don't know what to say." he said, looking at it with an odd look. "Truly. I, er, that is...thank you." He smiled and placed the, thing, back into its box.

McTavish's grin was Cheshire like as he watched the mix of emotions and flat confusion cross Uvek's face. "That is a Fishing lure. I call that one Crazy Betty. Its ment as both a gift and an invitation. In my spare time ive been developing a program on the Holodeck."

"Of course," replied Uvek, "I'd be honored to participate. I understand your term 'fishing', though on ch'Rihan it is a somewhat different sport. I look forward to exploring it with you."

"Please! Feel free to add any information to the program. Id like the program to reflect 'Fishing' from as many cultures as possible."

Azmay watched thoughtfully as e two companions exchanged words. Then, e replied to Lt. Uvek's question, all the while looking at the blue package as if e didn't know very well what to do with it.

"Does your race have such customs?"

"This one's people are not very religious... they speak about the Gate to Great Beyond, and consider it... but mainly, knowing they have received many gifts, they tend to think of the things they should give back in return. We don't think of the afterlife, but of this life. There are other concepts, but many of them are not for non-Lorabyn ears to hear. This one is sorry..."

"On the other hand, gift-sharing is a very respected custom. As they do not think of romantic love as other species do, friendship is highly thought of."

Azmay took the blue package in es hands, and looked at it, thoughtfully:

"It ashames this one that e doesn't have a gift for you, Ensign"

Location: Deck 15 Crew Lounge, USS Hartington
Character: Captain Brennon

A plain clothes David Brennon stepped into the lower decks crew lounge. Though he much preferred the main lounge, the Team Room on Deck 8, he also enjoyed being where his crew was. To be amongst them, especially during this time of the year, a time traditionally associated among many humans to be a time for one's family... out here, they were each others family, important to the last. He smiled as he saw a few of his Officers exchanging gifts, he had a few in his quarters that would be handed out later as well. Still smiling, he made his way to an empty table and sat down. It was almost all he could ask for, to be among this energy, with his people.

This is good.

Qech entered the room, her arms full of brightly wrapped bundles and wearing what was, unmistakably, a Santa hat. Though she may be a Trill, her experiences with the human holiday brought back nothing but good memories, and she decided to join the festivities with as big a smile as she could muster. She knew that she'd fool herself into a real one by the end of the night.

She walked over to an empty table next to where the Captain sat, and dropped the gifts down. Picking up a small parcel, she turned toward the gathered crew.

"Uvek! Head's up!" She said, tossing the present toward him in a high arc. She hoped he would like the tea. She couldn't help but notice that he drank a lot of the stuff during poker games, and some non-replicated good-quality leaves might be a nice change for him.

She gave him a thumbs-up gesture when he caught it, and then turned toward the Captain. "Merry Christmas, Sir... Or is it, Happy Christmas? I never get them right" she said, handing him a neatly-wrapped package. "I remember you said you left yours behind by accident. Don't ask where I got it." She smiled, hoping he'd like the wooden flute that he'd seemed almost naked without. She also couldn't help but notice the amused look she was getting on the account of her hat.

"I almost came in full Santa regalia... But I'm not quite fat enough for that yet" she laughed, unconsciously placing her hand on the barely noticeable protrusion of her belly. "Maybe I'll go stuff my face or something... Speed things along."
