Talbert sat back from his preform desk in the Operations Office. His office was on deck 9, next door to the Chief Security Office, and it was wedged against the curved bulkhead in a wedge shape. He felt stifled in it from time-to-time, and avoided it when he could, but it did serve a purpose, and allowed him to keep his files and notes in a central place.
He reviewed Garrett Walter's file, and leaned back, reviewing what he learned. So, the new ensign is looking for responsibility, eh? Ok. I'll see what he's made of.
"Ensign Walters," he called into the communicator on his desk, "Report to deck 9 Operations office at once." _________________

"I wonder what this is about." Garrett thought to himself as he jogged through the corridors. He was getting good at learning the layouts of the decks, for the second time.
"Well at least I'm getting a good workout." He said aloud as he stepped out of the turbolift at deck 9. Walters composed himself as he walked into the Ops office.
"Sir, Ensign Walters reporting as ordered." |

Talbert looked up as the fresh ensign came through his door and stood to attention.
"At ease, Ensign, please take a seat." he said. He pushed back a little from his desk and smiled at the man. "Congratulations on your recent promotion. It proves at least that you know your work." He slid a PADD across the desk to Mr. Walters. "There's an old Earth saying that goes fool me once shame on you, fool me twice....well, I don't get fooled twice. Having said that, and based on the reports from the Hartington, I have decided to give you some additional responsibility here." He paused and looked the ensign in the eye.
"The Excelsior class is an older type, but the recent upgrades here have made Guardian the top of her line. All departments coordinate through Operations. We coordinate schedules, oversee sensor allocation, basically coordinate just about every facet of the ship-board activity. Additionally, you develop and report incoming sensor information, and report to me. It's a big responsibility at any level."
He leaned onto his desk. "I've decided to give you Beta shift. You'll report to the bridge officer, of course, but you will be in control of schedule control and conflict resolution. I want you to take 48 hours, get used to the ship's new equipment as well as your team, then report to the bridge at 1700 hours. Any questions?"
A smile cracked his face. _________________
