The guard that was struck fell back a step -- a very well placed punch to off balance someone so large -- but no amount of force one humanoid could bring would have stopped the tidal wave that came next. The other two guards fell upon Uvek, striking with such fury that none of the Starfleeters could ever know. Despite his vulcanoid stamina, darkness soon fell upon Lieutenant Uvek.

***

Administrator Sann sat back watching the display, talons bridged in front of him, head shaking. His gaze turned to Commander Qech, who clearly wanted to join the fray.

"By all means, Commander, save your crewmen if you dare..."

"By all means, Commander, save your crewmen if you dare..."

Qech sat on the brink of the mayhem, horrified. Her reaction was quicker than her pain receptors and she stood too quickly, completely forgetting about her broken body. She clutched the chair as she stumbled, taken down by a bought of vertigo and shaking legs. As she watched, she knew there was nothing she could do. Even in good health she would still be outnumbered. But she couldn't sit there. She couldn't. She stood slowly, her legs reluctant to support her weight, and grabbed the arm of one of the pummeling guards in an attempt to pull him away from Uvek.

"Stop it! Leave him alone!"

(OOC: This takes place in Uvek's mind during the transition to the barracks, while Uvek is unconscious)

Uvek watched Commander Qech unwrap his gift to her. It was a Romulan Teral'n, wrapped in thick black paper. The others were there as well; Captain Brennon, McTavish, Zeara, Calodan and Koester. The party had gone well and this 'Christmas' could be tradition Uvek could respect and enjoy.

A moment later he was kneeling in front of a giant flame, inside of which was a lizard...no, a snake, large and coiled. Captain Brennon leapt forward and fired his phaser. The fire exploded into light and color and thought....thoughts! Hartington, Brennon, Qech! Somehow the beating he received shook something loose and his mind released itself. Unbidden thoughts opened a new passage and suddenly he knew. He knew everything and he was Uvek of Starfleet again.

Now, if only his body worked as well.

Sann watched Qech rise up to aid her crewmate, watched as his guards struck her down with as single blow and he watched as they fell upon the Trill and the Romulan. As he watched a smile crept across his serpentine face.

Flesh beat upon flesh as the brutal guards pummeled the Starfleeters, all the while their crewmate, their friend and Doctor stood back, watching. This too pleased the Administrator, who sat back and admired the scene. A better fate for such heretics I couldn't imagine the alien though to himself.

After several minutes of beatings, when the two had long since fallen unconscious, Sann held up a hand and brought his minions to a halt.

"Bring them back to the barracks, allow them some time to think about their actions and the consequences of fighting back. I want them scheduled for re-education as soon as they awaken. We'll begin with standard classes, moving forward with more intense sessions as necessary. Take them."

As the two beaten Officers were dragged from the room, Sann looked to the Doctor and posed a single question.

"Tell me what you are thinking. Why did this happen?"

Theirs was a world of pain, blurred vision and muffled voices. As Qech and Uvek were dragged away, broken and bloodied once again that was all they knew. The disorienting pull of gravity as the scaled hands of their Tal'Harton brutalizers pulled them along. The gut lurching feeling as their bodies flew through the air, hitting the earth of the barracks floor. The cold, alien hands of their fellow captives reaching out to help.

As seconds turned into minutes, more and more of the world returned to the Starfleeters. And of course, with the reawakening of the world around them so too came the sensation of pain lancing down their bodies, memories of the beatings so recently given.

Hands pulled the Officers up onto separate beds, easing a bowl of water to their mouths. Someone was trying to take care of them, trying to make sure they survived. In the blur they could almost see their caregivers, unfamiliar aliens that smiled down at them. The one holding Qech, a hauntingly thin woman with a very pronounced nasal ridge, spoke to her as she held the Trill.

"It's alright, we'll take care of you. Try to rest..."

As the confusion gripping her mind slowly began to fade away Qech had to actively force back the memory of how she ended up in the barracks. She was surprised to find herself in the arms of a stranger. She knew by the voice that it was a woman, but couldn't make out her face through her swelling eyes. As the pain returned full stream she recalled with blazing clarity what had happened. Uvek. She had tried to defend Uvek... Where was he? And what had become of the Doctor? Did the Tal'Harton ever come back for Rolen, or would she still find him on his bed?

She tried in vain to sit up to have a look. A pair of hands gently kept her from attempting it.

"It's alright, we'll take care of you. Try to rest..."

Qech struggled to see her caretaker, but the world around her was a blur. When she opened her mouth to speak she could taste blood. Her voice was weak and raspy, but she threw the sound forward as best she could.

"My friends... Where are they?"

"My friends... Where are they?"

Uvek raised a weak hand, turning his head slowly against the pounding of his skull. "Here, Commander," he croaked in a weak trembling voice.

He forced a smile as he glimpsed her through his blackened eyes. "You look like hell, commander." His head straightened itself and he used his experience to explore his body. Broken rib, 2nd lower on the right. Broken wrist, probably from smacking the snake guard's midsection. Broken collar bone; concussion. That about does it. That almost did it.

His mind was still rerouting, his thoughts scrambled. But still, the information gatherer in him, the Tal Shiar trained spy, began assessments. Scales folded down upon themselves.....heat.....the absence of cold, the folds of the skin......there were weaknesses there. His mind refused to focus. He closed his eyes and tried futiley to block out the pain washing over him, as an alien male cleaned his wounds.

Mechanically his hand found his ear, and he winced, waiting for the pain to overwhelm him again.

Qech breathed a slight, and pained, sigh or relief when she heard the Security Officer's voice.

"You look like hell, commander."

She started to laugh, but found she couldn't. She must have had broken ribs, because all that came out was some sort of choking noise. She was glad to hear he was able to make jokes however... Even if he wasn't entirely kidding.

"Do you know... ergh!" A stab of pain crept up her back. "Do you know what happened to Oliver?"

"Do you know what happened to Oliver?"

At that, Qech's caregiver shook her head, a sad look crossing her face.

"The guards only brought you and your green blooded friend back here. I'm afraid you shouldn't hold out much hope for anyone else. Though the Vorta you were with earlier is still in his bed. We've done our best to watch over him, though I'm afraid he won't last the night in his current condition... less if they take him away again."

Uvek shook his head. "I am afraid not." he replied. "If my mind can be trusted, commander, he seemed remarkably untouched and unaffected by all this."

He touched the alien helping him, lifting his hand off the Romulan's ribs, which hurt excessively. "Please, I will be fine. But perhaps you can help us in another way." Uvek struggled to sit up, his head spinning.

"What do the Tal'harton do with all these races?" he asked. "How do you all fit into this, aside from being fodder for their abuse?"

"We've done our best to watch over him, though I'm afraid he won't last the night in his current condition... less if they take him away again."

Qech closed her eyes and swallowed hard. She had done everything she could for him when she made the make-shift bandages. Without a med-kit she could help no one, not even herself from life-threatening injuries. She'd known just by looking at him that there was internal hemorrhaging. There was nothing she could do... But she still felt responsible for his death some how. Just like she'd feel responsible for Uvek's if they took him away again. Her eyes burned as she considered the possibility that they may not get out of there alive.

"There has to be something..." she whispered. "There just has to be..."

As she spoke, her hand drifted down to rest on her midsection. This life could be over before it even begins...

"What do the Tal'harton do with all these races? How do you all fit into this, aside from being fodder for their abuse?"

The alien shrugged, momentarily loosing her grip on Qech's shoulders. As she readjusted the Commander, holding onto her with a surprisingly firm yet gentle hand she replied to the Lieutenant.

"Some of us are captured for medical experimentation, others are brought here for conversion... the Tal'Harton have a powerful desire to bring the galaxy under their order, forcing those they come into contact with to either submit to their god or be destroyed. They believe that Tal, the first of their kind, gave them the mandate to temper the 'wild' instincts of what they believe to be lesser species. Tal also tells them that they will one day be rewarded for this effort with life everlasting. Foolish fairy tales and a poor reason to wipe civilizations from the stars..."

She turned her head, tears beginning to run down her face. She gently brought Qech's head back down to the pillow and covered her, stepping a few paces away to retrieve a glass of discolored water.

"They are a scourge. There is no reasoning with them, no stopping them. All any of our people have been able to do is try to get out of their way. I've heard of his kind," she motions over to Rolen as she speaks, "of his Dominion. Some think that they will be of help to us in stopping the Tal'Harton... but I see what they did to him and I can't help but to think that even they won't be able to help us, that they too will fall before our enemy."

ACTION

Qech, Uvek and Rolen all dematerialize from the barracks, reappearing on a transporter pad aboard the Hartington. Several medtechs rush the pad and help the trio towards sickbay.

***

Meanwhile back on the station, Administrator Sann is given the news of his captives. He looks up to the Doctor.

"Well, Doctor, it seems we will have to cut our time together short... Guards, please escort the Doctor back to the Barracks. I'll advise you not to come into contact with certain detainees, some of the population has a biology that repels teleporter technology. With any luck you'll be back aboard your ship in no time."
