ACTION

The Tal'Harton fighters swarmed Hartington as they made their escape. Blasts of phaser fire, much more powerful than the last vessel encountered by the Starfleet crew, rocked the ship as they hit. Captain Brennon called out for retreat as the Station began to open fire as well.

"Mr. Croft, lay in a course back to the probe, maximum warp!"

***

Below decks, the injured crewmen were taken to sickbay where they were greeted by a (mostly) recovered Doctor Kiv and the ship's EMH. The pair, along with the medical staff, began to work on the away team.

Kiv looked down to Qech as she began to scan over the First Officer, checking the most important areas of the Trill Woman's body first. In moments she sighed with relief.

"You're lucky we plucked you out of there when we did, Commander. The baby is in distress, but I think it'll be okay as long as we get you treated and keep you off your feet for a while. The Symbiont seems to have taken quite the beating as well, I'll need to do a more in depth scan once we have you stabilized."

She gently put a hand on her friend's shoulder and administered a sedative to help the Commander to relax.

Across the Sickbay, Lieutenant Uvek way laying next to Rolen, who was being worked upon furiously by the Holographic Doctor. Uvek himself was being tended to by T'Lau, the only Vulcanoid physician aboard the Hartington. After a few moments she closed her tricorder and looked Uvek in the eyes.

"You are fortunate, Lieutenant. You do not appear to be suffering from any life threatening wounds. While they are many, the injuries inflicted upon you are largely cosmetic, designed to cause the maximum amount of pain. With the exception of your ear, these wounds can be treated rather quickly. Your ear, however, will require some extensive cosmetic surgery. You can make that decision when we are no longer facing an emergency of this magnitude."

Fortunate. Hmmph. It did not feel very fortunate right now. Cosmetic wounds have a way feeling much worse than they look. He shook his head.

"There's no decision. My ears are part of my heritage, Dr. T'Lau, as you can appreciate, I am sure. I want the procedure as soon as I can withstand it. How are the others faring?"

USS Hartington Bridge
Xavier Croft

"Mr. Croft, lay in a course back to the probe, maximum warp!"

Croft punched in the coordinates.

"Course laid in, engaging warp drive!"

Ship jumped to warp, leaving the station behind.

Qech breathed a sigh of relief when Kiv said this. Her biggest concern and her greatest fear was the thought of losing her baby. She relaxed slightly when the doctor put her hand on her shoulder, knowing she was finally in good hands, if not entirely out of the woods. She could still lose it.

"They tortured the symbiont too. I feel like something is wrong, I just don't know what..." She shifted her weight slightly, flinching from the pain as she did so. The flood of memories from her encounter with the Tal'Harton came rushing back to her, followed immediately by the faces of the kind strangers who had helped them.

Something needs to be done.

"I need to speak with the Captain as soon as possible. It's important."

Ensign Azmay went around Sickbay, checking on the injured crewmen, helping es superior officers, and trying not to stand in the way of anyone.

"There's no decision. My ears are part of my heritage, Dr. T'Lau, as you can appreciate, I am sure. I want the procedure as soon as I can withstand it. How are the others faring?"

The young doctor quirked a brow in that uniquely Vulcan manner but said nothing more on the subject of her patient's ear.

"Commander Qech and Ambassador Rolen both suffered more extensive wounds than you, however I believe that Commander Qech will survive albeit with some amount of emotional trauma. Ambassador Rolen is in critical condition. Considering we know very little about practical Vorta medicine, I calculate only a 42% chance of survival."

Across the room, Doctor Kiv worked on the First Officer, helping to relieve her pain and bind her wounds.

"I need to speak with the Captain as soon as possible. It's important."

The ship shuttered as the words left the Commander's mouth. Doctor Kiv held onto the biobed so as not to fall to the ground -- she herself was still recovering from wounds received only days earlier.

"I'll let him know, but I think he has his hands full at the moment. The best thing for you to do right now is to try and relax."

The EMH called for Azmay to assist in Rolen's surgery, waving the Lorbay over.

"Doctor Azmay, another pair of hands if you will..."

As everyone around is either working frantically or wounded themselves, Doctor Newell enters sickbay, seemingly unharmed. He stands, almost in a daze as he sees the carnage unfolding before him. After a moment, Doctor T'Lau waved the Human over.

"I need your assistance with this patient."

ACTION

The ship was struck once again with the beams striking out from the Tal'Harton fighters. They were falling quickly behind the Hartington, but still striking out against her.

As they neared the probe the Captain called out his orders.

"Send out the deflector pulse, open the vortex!"

Smith sat down in a chair outside the brig enclosure. Looking into the first prisoner's eyes, he saw a sharp witted opponent. No matter, he was sure to get the information he needed.

Looking at his Chronometer, he saw it was time to start the interrogation.
"I'm sure the Lieutenant won't mind if I get a running start," he thought to himself...

"Listen up... I'm Petty Officer Smith with Ship's Security. You are prisoners of the United Federation Of Planets. If you cooperate with my questions, I am sure things will go by better for you. If you refuse to answer my questions, it will only prolong how long you are our prisoners!"

Calodan initiated the deflector pulse and the subspace vortex opened in front of them. The Hartington slipped through the vortex's mouth and the fighters followed. "Sir, the fighters are still on a pursuit course."

"Of course"

Ensign Azmay moved next to the Ambassador's bed, and begin assisting the EHM, es face as calm and serene as always.

((OOC: I believe he said he was, yes.))

Qech clenched her teeth when the ship rocked, forcing her to steady herself with muscles that clearly weren't ready to be used.

"I'll let him know, but I think he has his hands full at the moment. The best thing for you to do right now is to try and relax."

Qech tried to comply with the Doctor's orders, but her mind was racing almost as rapidly as her heart was. "They must be following us... I'm sure they'd be more than willing to sacrifice their fighters for some dogmatic reason. Stubborn soldiers are bad enough, but stubborn and faithful... That's a dangerous combination."

Stubborn, faithful and heartless... she thought to herself, once again resting her hand on her belly. She could feel her stomach growling, a sensation she had gotten used to over the last few days. Between herself, the baby and the symbiont, she was supposed to be eating for three; and here she hadn't had enough for even one. She tried again to relax, knowing that food would not be a possibility until her condition had stabilized, and she wanted to make that chore as easy on Dr. Kiv as possible. But she was so hungry...

Uvek felt the ship shudder. The ministrations of T'Lau were having an immediate effect and he was interested in getting into the fray, as well as pursuing his analysis with the captain.

"Dr. T'Lau," I need to be on the bridge. When can I leave here?" Even as he asked it, a sharp pain from his ribs brought his attention home. The regenerators were one thing, but healing was always time consuming.

"I need access to a computer console." He looked around, hindering T''Lau's efforts slightly, and causing him to have to adjust the bone reginerator several times. Uvek didn't care about that; pain was part of the job, and the job wasn't finished. He pushed T'Lau away and looked him in the eye.

"Either get me access to a computer console, or get me Lt. Calodan." he said sharply, then looked over to where Commander Qech was lying. She looked pale, wan and was apparently struggling with some internal injuries. These beasts had to pay, he thought, and they were going to.

Doctor Kiv nodded sadly, closing her tricorder.

"Unfortunately, I don't think there is very much we can do for the moment. You need to lay back and relax, the Captain will get us out of this, he has a damn fine crew to back him up and you know what? As First Officer you have a big part to play in that. Your people will get us through this, Commander, don't you worry."

"Either get me access to a computer console, or get me Lt. Calodan."

T'Lau's eyebrow shot up again, once more contorting her face in a uniquely Vulcan manner. She snapped closed the tricorder and reached out to the Tactical Officer, grabbing his newly knitted ribs. The act shot a bolt of pain through the man and in moments the Vulcan physician released him and stood ramrod straight.

"While you may not have suffered as greatly as Commander Qech has, you still have been injured. Your body needs time to recover. It is illogical for me to authorize your release when any strenuous activity could result in the undermining of my treatment."

Ambassador Rolen looks up at the doctors attending him through his swollen eyes. His mouth twists and his lips curve upwards as he sees Azmay standing over him. As he speaks, his smile frequently turns back into a grimace of pain as he coughs up an unhealthy amount of blood.

"Young Doctor Azmay, how nice... how nice of you to come to my assistance... I sss... uppose your kind frowns upon suicide just as mu... much as Commander Qech does... I will tell you how... tempted...:

The Vorta's voice vanishes in the hum of activity in Sickbay, his hand falling limp to the side.

The holographic doctor's eyes go wide as she reads over the information streaming into the display above the biobed. By sounds it was making, things did not look good for the Ambassador.

"We're loosing him! Doctor, cortical simulators!"

***

Up on the bridge, Hartington darts from side to side under the expert guidance of Lieutenant Croft. The enemy craft, while much more maneuverable seemed unable to keep a solid weapons lock on the larger Starfleet vessel. Captain Brennon, however seemed determined not to run for much longer.

"We need options people, we're still not fully recovered yet and I was kind of hoping for a little shore leave back on Panthanel. Options?"

Calodan had been reading through the raw sensor data as it was coming in, slowing the scroll to just barely the point of being readable. He had an idea, but it was dangerous and he wanted to be sure it would work before executing it.

"Sir, I believe we can collapse the subspace tunnel behind us. This would destroy anything that is behind the point of collapse, but also produce a rapdily accelerating destabilization of the remaining length of corridor. It would require some very precise timing, but if we were to collapse the tunnel nano seconds before exiting and then immediately accelerate to warp 7 upon reaching normal space, we would avoid the worst of the radiation pulse while the Tal'Harton fighters would be destroyed."

Calodan swiveled in his chair and looked at Captain Brennon. "Sir, I should mention that this maneuver will permanently seal this subspace tunnel and has the potential to destabilize subspace in both the entry and exit systems, making warp travel and subspace communications impossible. There also would be a radiation pulse that could affect several of the adjoining starsystems. Effectively, we would be creating a natural disaster that has the potential to affect many people beyond just our crew."

Qech managed a weak smile before she heard the instruments over Rolen's biobed sound out in that foreboding manner that only medical alarms can have. She new that sound; he was dying. She didn't spare a thought when she sat up to look over at him, inevitably hurting herself as she did so. She bit down hard on her tongue to muffle the cry of pain that threatened to break through her lips. She was frozen like that for what seemed like a long time, unwilling to try and move, even to lay back down. She hadn't meant to sit up; her reflexes had kicked in before common sense could take over. But she used her fraction of a second of stability to take note of the others in the room.

Uvek actually seemed to be fighting with the Vulcan medic, and Rolen was, to her dread, slipping away...

Wincing, the Lieutenant looked at his vulcan doctor. Under normal circumstances he would find her quite attractive, especially when she raised that eyebrow. Now was not normal circumstances.

"An unnecessary demonstration, doctor. I do not require release, I require a computer console. I have tactical data that must be collated now, while it is fresh in my mind. Surely one can be provided here, by my bed, while I recover under your adequate and appreciated care." He smiled. "I have recovered from wounds of this type before. I can do so now, while organizing my thoughts. Please, doctor, get me a computer console."

He heard a commotion and looked over to Rolen's bed. The lines and alarms on his biobed denoted a less than good outcome. While he had no love for Rolen, he did not want to see his life end at the hands of such evil creatures.
