(OOC: Sorry for the delay, I meant to do this earlier today but I was a little slow getting started this morning. Zeara, I think Mr. Smith is waiting for you in the Brig to talk with the aliens)

Location: Brig, USS Hartington

"Listen up... I'm Petty Officer Smith with Ship's Security. You are prisoners of the United Federation Of Planets. If you cooperate with my questions, I am sure things will go by better for you. If you refuse to answer my questions, it will only prolong how long you are our prisoners!"

The prisoners looked at Smith for a moment, cocking their heads with curiosity. Two of the aliens in the front row looked between the Human and each other, squawking back and forth in what would -- for them -- constitute a low voice. After a moment, one steps forward and presses a leathery hand to the force field. The blue light shimmers and electricity passes between the field and the alien. The sensation is designed to become painful after a few moments, a determinant or any would be escapists. But this fellow pressed on, not making any headway, but not giving up. It was almost as though he was trying to convey a message to the human security officer, very plain if one looked into his eyes: Let me out!

***

Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington

"Effectively, we would be creating a natural disaster that has the potential to affect many people beyond just our crew."

Captain Brennon shook his head and looked to his Second Officer as Calodan finished presenting his plan.

"Not an option Jim. I will not harm a half a dozen worlds just to get away from the Tal'Harton. If you can seal the tunnel without causing that radiation pulse then I'll listen. Anyone else?"

***

Location: Sickbay, USS Hartington

Doctor Kiv put her hand gently, yet forcefully down onto Qech's shoulder in an attempt to lower the other woman back into a prone position.

"Commander, you need to lay back. Please, don't strain yourself."

She noticed Doctor Newell step into the room and waved the man over as Doctor T'Lau did the same, urgency in both her gesture and voice.

"Sorry to over-rule you, T'Lau, but I need Doctor Newell to assist with Commander Qech. Doctor, if you please."

She motions towards the Trill First Officer and handed him a tissue regenerator. As she started to move off she looked back down to Qech, a smile crossing her face.

"It'll be alright."

With that she stepped away towards Ambassador Rolen, who lay dying on the table not 5 meters away.

***

Doctor T'Lau's look was incredulous as her superior procured the services of Doctor Newell, services that she was about to employ. She turned her attention back to Lieutenant Uvek, and considered what he had said.

"Very well, a computer console. You will limit your activities to work that can be done from a PADD while in a prone position. Should you disregard these limitations you will be considered to have violated medical orders and placed in a stasis field. Do you accept these terms, Lieutenant?"

***

ACTION

The ship rocks to the side once again, more violently this time than the previous blasts. As the Hartington traverses the Subspace tunnel, the Tal'Harton continue to fire, risking the collapse of their very mode of transportation. A call comes up to the Bridge from Main Engineering.

"Bridge, this is Chief Tasker, Lieutenant Ghan has been injured, a Plasma manifold erupted breaking out into a fire. We've contained it but the Lieutenant has been taken out of commission. He's on his way to sickbay now. Captain, we can't take many more hits like that..."

Qech looked up to Dr. Newell as he approached the biobed, unable to quash the feelings of mistrust that were stirring just below the surface. Something had gone seriously wrong back in that camp. She wasn't sure exactly what, but from what she'd seen, the Doctor had appeared to be either a traitor, or a coward. She didn't find either favorable. And she wondered if she was just being unreasonable; the last few days had been quite a traumatic experience after all, and her emotions were tipping the scale.

As she looked up at him, this man who was now responsible for her well-being, Qech found she was actually nervous. She had to ask...

"Oliver, what happened back there?"

Uvek nodded and then grabbed his bed and grimaced as the blow rolled the ship. "Satisfactory, thank you doctor."

"OOC: (On the Bridge reporting as Ensign Phell, who recovered from his injuries in the initial attack):

"Captain, we could conceivably release deuterium and anti-deuterium simultaneously. Ignited by a photon torpedo, this chemical combination could explode with sufficient force to short out their subspace fields. It may also collapse the corridor without damaging surrounding space!" He rechecks his readings, "Of course, it would have to be split second timing, but it could be done."

Croft turned to the Captain,

"Sir, we could stop in the subspace tunnel. If we stop fast enough, it might send at least some of the fighters into the side of the tunnel. I can't imagine their shields could withstand the hit, I wouldn't try it with the Hartington."

The Captain nodded to Lieutenant Calodan, a worried look fixed on his face.

"Go."

Lieutenant Woods took the Ops position as Calodan left the Bridge. No sooner had the turbolift doors closed that two more suggestions came to the Captain in a matter of moments.

"Sir, we could stop in the subspace tunnel. If we stop fast enough, it might send at least some of the fighters into the side of the tunnel. I can't imagine their shields could withstand the hit, I wouldn't try it with the Hartington."

Brennon considered the two plans, making his decision quickly.

"Lieutenant Woods, alert engineering that we'll need all the power we can to the engines, once we're clear of the tunnel I want maximum warp. Ensign Phell, prepare to release the deuterium . Mr. Croft, seat of your pants time."

Croft turned back to his console, punching in a few commands. Let's see, outrun explosion in a possibly collapsing subspace tunnel, then jump to warp as soon as we are clear, nobody is ever going to believe this He made a few adjustments.

"All ready here sir."

Location: BRIDGE - Ensign Phell, npc, again:

Phell smiled into his respirator. Uvek would be proud of me, thought the Benzite. It was truly his first combat action on the ship, and he had actually made a good suggestion! Of course, he meant to suggest it several seconds ago, but he had to re-check his calculations...just to be sure.

"Captain, the deuterium and anti-deuterium mixture is building now, it will be released 2.3 seconds prior to the photon torpedo launch. The explosion will occur less than 2/10ths of a second after we exit the corridor. By acclerating to maximum warp, we will only need the shields to absorb 1/3 of the initial energy discharge."

He cringed due to the extremely tight timeframe, but it could not be helped. And the Hartington
should easily be able to withstand the blow, provided the tunnel collapsed as predicted, that is...

"Go."

Calodan rose from his chair and his replacement took over Ops.

The turbolift ride took entirely too long. His arrival in Engineering was completely missed by the rest of the Engineering crew. They were still attempting to lock down the damaged plasma manifold.

"Chief Tasker, report."

As Calodan was waiting for a status report on the ship, he checked out the MSD. The ship was in rough shape: shields were failing, structural integrity fields were being taxed, and power reserves were being taxed. "Nevermind Chief, I can see from the MSD. Keep working, I'll see what I can do here."

The ship was rocked with a series of sharp blows and sparks blew out from a console across Engineering. Sparks were followed by fire. "You two," Calodan said pointing at two crewmembers, "Lock that down." He checked the MSD again and cursed under his breath. He opened a comm channel to the Bridge. "Captain, we have a problem. That last hit knocked the primary antimatter injectors offline. Without them, best I can give you is warp two. It is going to take at least two hours to realign the injectors to cut over from the secondaries." The ship was rocked by another phaser blast and more sparks lit up the smokey interior of Engineering.

Location: Sickbay
Character: Ensign Azmay

Ambassador Rolen looks up at the doctors attending him through his swollen eyes. His mouth twists and his lips curve upwards as he sees Azmay standing over him. As he speaks, his smile frequently turns back into a grimace of pain as he coughs up an unhealthy amount of blood.

"Young Doctor Azmay, how nice... how nice of you to come to my assistance... I sss... uppose your kind frowns upon suicide just as mu... much as Commander Qech does... I will tell you how... tempted...:

The Vorta's voice vanishes in the hum of activity in Sickbay, his hand falling limp to the side.

Ensign Azmay shook es head sadly, and kept on working on the Vorta, wondering if e will ever have the chance to speak to him. There are some legends, in the distant past of the Loraby, that point to beings similar to the Founders... even the Loraby's ancestors themselves, the Lorabithze, were described as beings made of energy who had once been flesh and blood, as the Loraby were now. It would be a pity, were the Ambassador to die.

Croft did some quick calculations.

"Captain, at warp two without maximum shields I put it a 50/50 shot that the ship will be able to out run the blast radius." Croft ran through several options quickly, trying to find another option. There's got to be a way better the odds

As Smith went to talk to the alien detainees Koester was careful to have a detail on station to contain the aliens if they decided to riot. He ordered a security man to meet Lt. Zeara at the entrance to the brig. His sole duty was to keep her safe.

He watched as Smith was conducting the interrogation. The man definitely had potential.

Location Bridge: Ensign Phell:

"Captain, at the very moment we exit the tunnel, I recommend shifting all shields to aft. I am preparing to transfer all non-essential power to the shield generators, this will increase our shield capacity to 72%."

*****Sickbay********

Uvek looked into his PADD. He had no idea what was happening outside sickbay, but when Lt. Ghan came in he knew it wasn't good. His attention diverted momentarily to Rolen. It was going poorly, and he feared the worst for the Dominion ambassador. Worse still was the unknown factor of how the Founders would take the death of their representative on the first joint effort in their space!

His PADD bleeped, and he looked down. Interesting, he thought. The small viewscreen showed a red device with a short black hose hanging from it. Nowadays the duties of that ancient piece of equipment were being handled by shipboard automated devices....maybe it was time to return to some old ways, he thought. He kept inputting his data, and extrapolating. In a short time he'd have a weapon design for his captain. One that he felt would shift the balance.

Location: Main Engineering

The ship is rocked by a another series of concussive blows, tossing most of the engineering crew to deck and overloading consoles. Luckily, the newly installed waveguides channeled most of the overload into the deck and not into the crew.

As Calodan struggled back to his feet and examined the MSD, the situation became clear. Aft shields had collapsed and there was nothing to be done to get them back online, they had just taken too much of a beating recently. As he began to input commands to shift what shield power they had left as far aft as possible, port shields fizzed out as well. They were unprotected. "Calodan to the Bridge." Nothing. "Calodan to Captain Brennon." Nothing. He tapped at his console and tried to bring up a text link only to be greeted by a main computer error telling him to all communications subsystems were down. He pulled up an auxiliary console showing sensor readouts to aft and saw the Tal'Harton fighters closing in, preparing to make killing strikes. Through the smoke of Engineering, he saw crew members making repairs and had a bit of a flashback to the Hood. Never again.

"Crewman," he yelled, gesturing wildly at a Crewman manning a Warp Propulsion substation. "On my mark, I want you to activate the warp drive along our current course, Warp 7. Understood."

The Crewman replied in a thick welsh accent that made understanding him difficult. "Sir, with the secondary injectors, we are only capable of warp 2."

"Nevermind that, just carry out the order on my mark." Calodan began inputting his command codes and removing safety subsystems from the secondary antimatter injectors. His actions would fry them, but give them 30 seconds at Warp 7, which should be enough. As he removed the last magnetic constrictor and interlock safeties, he yelled out "Warp 7, NOW!"

The ship lurched, her inertial dampeners barely able to keep up with the strain of the massive acceleration from 1/8th the speed of light to almost 700 times that. Outside the ship, the warp field had an immediate effect on the subspace tunnel, creating rifts and eddies that made traversing it much more difficult. Several Tal'Harton fighters were slammed into subspace disturbance that disintegrated them. In a brief second, the Hartington was ejected from the tunnel's terminus in a brilliant flash of light and radiation and continued at warp speed. The energy of the ejection accelerated them to almost warp 9 for the briefest of seconds before the ship's considerable inertia took over.

Behind them, a wave of subspace distortion extending through the system spread out, rendering travel impossible. Hartington rode the leading edge of this wave, until her warp drive failed under the stress. A sudden deceleration could be felt throughout the ship and main power went offline, replacing the normal lighting with the reddish glow of emergency power.

USS Hartington Bridge
Xavier Croft

Croft had barely kept his chair when the ship had bucked, and had just enough time to verify the ship was still on course, when the ship lurched and his console showed the ship accelerating well past warp 2.

"Captain, we just jumped to warp!" After that, it was all Croft could do to keep the ship pointed in the right direction, half the warning lights on his console flashing back at him. What the hell?
