Daniels leaned closer across the table, the small light highlighting his rougish face, as he whispered to the crewman across from him. She was cute human, stationed in Stellar Cartography, that he had been watching for several weeks.
"I mean, there I was listening to the planet-side chatter and, bang, Gaer's dead!" He shook his head, hanging it in mock misery. "I couldn't believe it." The woman's face showed sympathy, and her hand came across the table to touch his. "You poor thing," she said, "What did you do?"
Stephen looked into her eyes, "I came here looking for you." She leaned back, a cynical look on her face. "Oh, really?"
"Well, truth be told, I came here looking for solace, and here you are." He leaned in. "Look, I didn't know Gaer but an officer is dead. That kinda stuff hits you right here." He patted his heart. "I just don't deal well with those kinds of things. Truth is, I was there in the thick of it, and I'm...I'm not sure how to feel." He hung his head down, averting his eyes. (The truth was, he didn't really feel anything, but she didn't need to know that). The crewman leaned back in and patted his hand again. This time the touch lingered.
"Listen, do you want to go to my quarters and share a drink with me?" asked Daniels, "In memory of Commander Gaer, I mean?" The crewman looked at him curiously. "I mean, some people just cope differently with grief, and I just don't want to be alone right now."
She nodded and they moved towards the door together, ready to share their loss. _________________
