"Perhaps the three of us would be able to find some sort of nice diversion worthy of our time... what do you say?"

"That might be entertaining."

"Perhaps the three of us would be able to find some sort of nice diversion worthy of our time... what do you say?"

Qech looked to Calodan.

"That might be entertaining." He said.

She smiled, and looked back to Yeoman M'rowl. "I don't see where Dr. Kiv would have a problem with it, as long as I wasn't alone. Supposedly I'm to be released sometime tomorrow, barring any bad turns." She shrugged. "Not that I expect that to happen."

She let the image sink into her mind for a moment; sunshine, fresh air... It sounded almost too good to be true. Her spirits lifted a bit.

"Hopefully by tomorrow I'll be able to eat a full meal again. I've come to miss dessert." She smiled. "But before I go I should try to get a hold of my parents, and my brother if I can. He's on a dig somewhere in the Alpha quadrant, and he's impossible to get a message to."

He smiled at Commander Qech. He knew that his time earlier was well spent. "Actually Commander, not impossible..just very hard. I took the liberty of setting up a comm link to your brother's dig site on Alpha Holler II. A friend owed me a favor."

Qech laughed. "Is there anything else I should know? You haven't gone and knitted me a sweater or anything?... For the record, Alpaca makes me itch." She shook her head, still chuckling. "You didn't need to go through all the trouble, Jim. But I do appreciate it. Every time I try to get a message to him it's like chasing my own tail... Um, no offense, Yeoman."

"You haven't gone and knitted me a sweater or anything?"

'Nope, not a knitter and it was really no trouble. Just called in a favor or two. As I said, the whole crew is pulling for you and your cargo." He smiled at her, a bit of twinkle in his eyes. Having been a mother and a father, he knew how much fun...and how scary, these months could be. As the only other joined Trill on the ship, Qech had become like family to him. After the riots on Trill, having someone who understood, even nonvocally, made everything easier to handle.

Qech sighed happily. "I look forward to talking to him again. I haven't been able to since before I left Trill, and even then it wasn't face-to-face. These digs last awhile. And my parents, well... They obviously don't know about everything that's happened recently, and unless the worst happens I don't plan on bringing it up." She sighed. "I'll just worry them that way."

She looked to Calodan, a look of polite understanding on her face. "How's your family doing? Trill must seem like a completely different place right now."

"My family is still on Jupiter Station. Even though my father is retired, they keep him on as a consultant. I don't think my Mother would know what to do on Trill, it's a long way from the small town she was born in on Earth. They seem to be doing well..my father is unjoined and has never had a desire for a symbiont so the news wasn't as...disturbing for him as most."

Calodan got a bit of a far away look. His father had never accepted his decision to keep the Calodan symbiont. He should tell Qech the story sometime.

"They seem to be doing well..my father is unjoined and has never had a desire for a symbiont so the news wasn't as...disturbing for him as most."

Qech looked slightly confused at that comment. "Well, it should still be just as disturbing. Symbiont or no, there was a massacre down there. The unjoined should feel just as affected." She sighed, shaking her head. "I'm sorry. It's not my place to judge, I just..." Her voice trailed off, her thoughts once again drifting back to Taj. The subject of home always seemed to bring his face back into her mind. She tried to shake it away, determined not to wander down the all-too familiar path of grief, at least not now. She'd just started to feel a little better.

The commander smiled warmly at her friend. "Well, I'm glad your family wasn't immediately in harm's way that day."

"Ya, the Retlan clan faired well. That's my unjoined host name. We had an uncle who got a little beatup and some distant cousins who are still MIA, but besides that, no issues. We were lucky."

USS Hartington Panthanel Prime
Xavier Croft

After several hours of hiking in what can only be described as a forest of stone, they had stopped in the shadow of a massive stone arch. The natural formation was nearly 100 meters tall and almost 400 meters wide. Croft still couldn't believe it was still standing. He was laying out a blanket for the picnic. "So, Rea, glad you didn't stay on the Hartington doing paperwork?"

Taking in the landscape surrounding them she had to admit that she was glad to know it was real, not some holodeck illusion.

"I will admit that I have enjoyed the hike and the knowledge that this is all real, it reminds me greatly of my youth on earth..." she said as she set down her pack and took another look around, "But in knowing that the paperwork is still waiting, and likely growing in number while I'm out here does put a damper on it all."

"I don't see where Dr. Kiv would have a problem with it, as long as I wasn't alone. Supposedly I'm to be released sometime tomorrow, barring any bad turns. Not that I expect that to happen."

M'Rowl smiled and nodded, clearly enthused about the trip.

"I'm glad to hear that, I'll arrange for a shuttle," her eyes go towards Qech at the mention of the shuttle, "and drop by to help you when you're released. Does that sound good, Commander?"

Location: Inside Uvek's Mind

"What do I do? I can no more remove this experience from me as I could cut off my own hand. How do I move forward and make judgments based on this life, this uniform?"

Doctor T'Lau pondered the question for several long moments before replying. She had to sound assured and informed, her dedication to the patient demanded it. Finally she spoke, a vision of confidence to help calm the torrent of emotions that radiated out from Uvek's mental persona.

"I am no counselor, Lieutenant, however I believe that the most effective way for you to move forward is to simply do so. Focus on your duties, think of the reasons you left Romulus and why you have pledged your loyalty to the Federation. You are correct, the past will always be with you, but you have the power to move forward and incorporate the Uvek you were with the Uvek you are to form the Uvek you will become. Do you understand?"

Qech knew very well what M'Rowl was doing. Taking a shuttle would mean the First Officer could avoid the frightening prospect of having to transport down. Given that M'Rowl had known Ailis very well, Qech was hardly surprised that the Yeoman was privy to her phobia. She smiled, thankful for her understanding.

"Thanks M'Rowl" she said, suppressing a yawn. She found it funny that, even though she'd spent most of her time in sickbay sleeping, she still hadn't gotten much rest. "If you ask Dr. Kiv I'm sure she can tell you when I'm scheduled to be released. I don't know much other than 'sometime tomorrow.'"

Uvek considered the words, standing for long moments with them rolling in his mind. Then he looked at T'Lau with a strange sense of understanding. He smiled slyly and stepped forward, toward Tal Shiar Uvek. He extended his arms and closed his eyes, receiving the persona, accepting the idea of Uvek the spy; the man he was but was no more. A bright light filled the shuttle and an empty Romulan uniform hit the deckplate. Uvek stood with his head tilted backward for a moment, his eyes closed, absorbing this part of his mind. Then he turned and moved toward the Uvek receiving the cortical sensor from Doctor Newell. A moment later and the light flashed again. The sensor fell to the deck, unattached and offline.

The sole remaining Uvek Suran looked at Doctor T'Lau. His eyes were clear and full of purpose, his mind clear and focused. "I understand, Doctor. And I thank you."

"If you ask Dr. Kiv I'm sure she can tell you when I'm scheduled to be released. I don't know much other than 'sometime tomorrow.'"

"0900 hours tomorrow morning, provided that the tests I run then are satisfactory." Came the voice of Doctor Kiv, stepping back out into the Sickbay's ICU. She looked squarely at Yeomen M'Rowl and Lieutenant Calodan as she spoke again. "That means that the Commander is going to need a good night rest if she's to go anywhere tomorrow. Visiting hours are over, you can come back after she's had a little bit of sleep."

Yeomen M'Rowl nodded, understanding the Doctor's insistence. She patted Qech on the shoulder as she started off, turning back briefly enough to bid the Commander farewell before leaving the room.

"I suppose we'll see you tomorrow, Commander. Sleep well."

Location: Lieutenant Uvek's Quarters

The mindscape melted away, leaving Uvek and T'Lau kneeling in the former's quarters. As the reality of the physical world returned to them, the Vulcan physician removed her hands from Uvek's face. The residual emotions coming off of the Lieutenant suggested to her that the damage had been repaired, though only a complete medical workup would be able to tell for sure. Being the professional that she was, T'Lau told Uvek just that.

"I believe we have succeeded, much more rapidly than I had first believed possible. I will need to take several scans to be certain, but for now I am confidant that the crisis has passed. How do you feel, Lieutenant?"
