Uvek made his way down to deck 8 and entered the crew lounge. He found a quiet empty seat and moved toward it. In a moment the attendant appeared, and Uvek leaned back.

"I feel like meat tonight," he told the young crewman. "I'll try a terran steak, rare with a salad on the side." The attendant moved off to get the romulans food.

Uvek sat quietly waiting on his food and running things through in his mind. He felt a phantom pain in his ear and reached up, touching the new tip. Hmmph. He looked around the room, alternately wanting to be alone, and yet strangely hoping for company. It was hard to fathom, these emotions. This ship structure was hard to adapt to. Uvek wondered if he wouldn't better serve back in Starfleet intelligence. Why had Admiral Dwyer suggested this ship? Get him out of the Alpha quadrant? Was Dwyer looking out for himself or Uvek? There certainly had seemed to be some connection there, beyond defector and handler. Well, no matter. He was here and here he would serve, even if he had to relearn everything he already knew.

Ensign Thompson approached Uvek after his food had arrived and was invited to sit. In short order Beck, Wainwright and Mavers had joined them, and they engaged the next hour discussing ship matters, training schedules and general bulletins issued throughout the week. The dark matter nebula shown eerily through the window just beyond and Uvek occassionally looked in that direction, wishing he knew how to approach a more personal level with these men, on whose shoulders rested the safety and security of hundreds of men and women.

One by one they filtered out as their individual points were made and questions answered, and Uvek was left on the front-facing sofa watching space and sipping his tea. Dinner out was becoming just the change up he needed in his schedule. He resolved to sit a while longer; maybe even try some of the deserts humans seemed so fond of. In his lifestyle before this, deserts were simply not in the picture.

USS Hartington Lounge
Xavier Croft

Croft wandered up to a replicator, ordering one of his programmed classics, cheeseburger and a coke, and then found a table near a viewport so he could enjoy the view. He noticed that Uvek was sitting by himself, fingering his ear absentmindedly, which caused him to smile. Croft never seemed to get used to the Romulan, probably because he so resembled a Vulcan. He rarely acted like a Vulcan, which was probably why Croft found him fascinating. He caught his eye and motioned to the empty chair, not exactly wanting to eat his meal on a couch.

(OOC: What timeframe does this take place in? I may get a character involved depending on when.)

(OOC: I'm sorry, yes....beta shift.....I was thinking about that today, in point of fact, I failed to mention that this was an open thread and it was right after Uvek got off duty.)

The CTO moved over to Croft, motioning to an attendant for more tea. He nodded agreeably, grateful for the reprieve from his own thoughts.

"Mr. Croft, pleasant to see you." He said smiling. "I trust you are well. I have never seen the considerable interest Terrans have for carbonated beverages. I tried one once....a Mr. Pibb, I believe it was called. Horrid tasting device. Still, I hope you enjoy yours."

Croft laughed, "I would have to agree with you there, Mr. Pibb is pretty gross. I good cola or rootbeer though, is quite a different experience." He smiled slightly, "I see you've got both your ears back to almost normal." He sipped his coke, enjoying the sweetness.

Uvek touched his right ear tenderly, it didn't hurt at all. The memory was enough and he couldn't seem to get past it. He smiled at the comment.

"Indeed. I am a whole Romulan again, thanks to the skills of Dr. T'Lau." He didn't go into the full details, but the Vulcan doctor did more than reform his ear.

"Were you able to take advantage of the shore leave?" He asked the Lieutenant. "I was unfortunately engaged, but I uderstand the planet offered excellent diversions." He sipped his recently delivered tea with some appreciation. During the discussion he had ordered something called apple crisp. It just sounded intriquing. It arrived as Croft responded. Uvek was right. It was very intriquing.

Croft smiled, "Yes I did actually. They have the most amazing rock formations on the surface, did some hiking with Counselor Zeara. She makes some good company, although she seems distracted lately." He nods to the plate as it arrives, "Good choice."

"I daresay several of the crew have been distracted of late, myself included. However, this dark nebula should provide some focus to them. I myself find it less enthusiastic, unfortunately. There are only so many drills one can run, and our teams are doing remarkably well."

He tasted the terran desert with some satisfaction. "Fascinating." he muttered, then looked in embarrassment to Croft. "Forgive me. I have rarely tasted Federation food. I have only just decided to attempt a new path. We will see what develops from it. So far, it is quite a delicious decision."

Croft waves his cheeseburger in Uvek's direction, "Although Doctor Kiv would probably cuss you out for a week, a cheeseburger every once in a while is a wonderful treat. I usually eat much healthier, but every once in a while I let my hair down, so to speak." He grabbed a fry and ate it, a look of delight on his face, almost ecstatic.

Uvek smiled at the "hair down" comment. Human mannerisms were still, after many years interacting with them, quite fascinating.

"I'm sorry, but I think my metabolism would never survive that." Uvek looked at Croft and decided to change tack.

"Mr. Croft, tell me something about your home. What brought you to Starfleet?"

Croft's eyes appear to darken for a moment, he looks out the viewport. "It was expected of me. It's in the family as it were. " He looks at Uvek, "My father, the Great Admiral Croft, would allow nothing less." His countenance lightens, he chuckles, "I guess it's lucky that piloting a starship was all I ever thought of, besides commanding one that is." He grins, "How bout yourself? A Romulan in Starfleet, that must make the family something other than proud?"

"How bout yourself? A Romulan in Starfleet, that must make the family something other than proud?"

It was time for Uvek's expression to darken momentarily. He should have expected that, and maybe he did but it didn't make talking about his role any easier.

"I have no family per se, and I'm sure some who would see this may be other than proud, without doubt." He leaned back, full and satisfied. "My choice to join the Hartington was relatively easy. I was assigned here by Starfleet Intelligence to help develop tactical information in the Gamma Quadrant and fill vacancies left from the war. So far, I feel less than effective."

He glanced at a chronometer on the wall near the bar. It was approaching Gamma Shfit, and he needed to get rest before Alpha came back on. He looked back at Croft.

"Well, Mr. Croft. I have appreciated your company. I hope you will excuse me, but I think it is, to coin a phrase, past my bedtime." He stood and smiled in gratitude. "I trust your evening will pass successfully. I will see you on the bridge."

(OOC: I'll let Croft respond and, if there is nothing else, I think we can close out this thread....thanks for the interaction)......

Croft smiled warmly, "Nice talking with you, see you in the morning." He stayed behind a few more minutes, finishing his meal, then heads to his own quarters.

OOC No prob, nice to have a little character interaction, show a little depth
