"Captain, with your permission I will accompany you to the Bridge. I have been crosstrained in the NX Class tactical systems and until we receive a full-time tactical officer would like to offer my services in that respect."
Hofmann turned to his assembled MACO team and gave them a nod. His stern voice contrasted the Captain's soft one. "You all know your orders. You are to report to your shipboard duty stations. Dismissed." The MACO team broke formation. Within minutes, each member had removed his or her weapons and placed them neatly in their respective racks in the armory and exited, off to do their duties in shipboard life. Hofmann was pleased in how efficient his team worked.
"Sir, if I may speak a bit more freely now that the team is no longer here." After a brief nod, Hofmann looked the Captain in the eyes. "I have seen the intelligence on the Romulans...I know I won't be bringing every member home to their families, but I will be damned if I sacrifice even one life unnecessarily. I just want you to understand that will be the driving force of any combat decision I am forced to make - make every life count." _________________

"Commander Vishani, alert the harbormaster. Once I return to the bridge we'll be shoving off."
Kyle swallowed hard when the call came over the bridge comm. This is it. Years of preparation, dreaming and arguing with his father was coming to a head. This is it. He typed in the final coding sequence for helm control, and then unlocked and slid his chair to the steering column.
Locking the chair in place, he grabbed the 'stick' and tapped the console to life. The entire ship was now in his hands. Not literally, he knew, but for sure he was in control of where they were headed. The powerful warp drive, the sophisticated impulse engines, all of it. The ship was ready to respond to his command. He only hoped he was ready to direct it. Well, he'll soon find out. _________________

Challenger - Engineering
Lt Namara
Finishing up some organizational tasks, Isaac pauses thoughtfully, then walks over to the comm console.
"Lt Marcus, Lt Namara here. I know you are probably excited to see how she handles. I know I would be, but please take it easy and work into the more strenuous maneuvers. The systems could use a break-in period. There will be plenty of time and opportunity to push her to the limits." _________________

Marcus smiled as the engineer read his mind. "Understood, sir." He replied. "I'll try not to punch her to warp until we clear Saturn at least."
He looked at the warp activation lever and let his imagination run wild, soaring ahead of the ship into the unknown. Although his computer programming experience showed that reality often fell short of desire, he knew the Challenger would rise to its name. He tried to calm himself, and waited for the captain to arrive. _________________

Location: Bridge
For a few moments he watched the bridge crew, drinking in their pride and excitement. Carefully controlling his own anticipation, Vishani stretched out his arm to the comm, "Harbormaster Jacobs, this is the Challenger, requesting clearance for departure." _________________

Location: En Route from MACO Armory to Bridge, Challenger
Stepping back from the Com Panel, the Captain started towards the door, clearly a man on a mission.
"Stand easy everyone. As you were."
He was nearly at the door when Hofmann spoke up, the MACO's intent clear by the question asked.
"Captain, with your permission I will accompany you to the Bridge. I have been crosstrained in the NX Class tactical systems and until we receive a full-time tactical officer would like to offer my services in that respect."
Used to making snap decisions, Wells nodded and motioned for the MACO to follow next to him.
"It would be a pleasure to have you on the Bridge with us, Major."
The two men stepped out into the corridor and quickly into a nearby turbolift. Once inside, Major Hofmann spoke up again.
I just want you to understand that will be the driving force of any combat decision I am forced to make - make every life count."
Wells looked over at the other man for several long seconds before giving the lift the command to halt. Suspended in the turboshaft, cut off from the rest of the ship for the moment, the Captain took in this moment and smiled.
"Major, you wouldn't be on this crew if you didn't believe that and if General Casey didn't believe that. I also wouldn't be letting you on my bridge if I didn't think you'd put the lives of every person aboard Challenger first. You're a good soldier, Hofmann, but what's more I'm told you're a good person. Follow your heart and we won't have a problem." _________________

Hofmann returned the Captain's smile. "Yes sir. I'm glad we are on the same page. General Casey had several good things to say about you sir, glad to see he wasn't just blowing smoke." _________________

Challenger
Bridge
Dr. Alex Weyland
Weyland leaned against a bulkhead, bouncing the hypospray he was holding in his hand. The excitement from the bridge crew was almost palpable, even though they were almost guaranteed to face war and death against the Romulans, the allure of the unknown was irresistible. He glanced at the turbolift, then shook his head. Cade always liked to make an entrance _________________

Kyle could feel it through the console and spreading up the yoke and into his hands. It was a subtle but obvious vibration. The ship was coming alive! The engines were beginning to cycle up, having reached proper temperatures, and Marcus knew the Challenger was as ready as the crew was. Despite being an inanimate object, Kyle could imagine what the computer consoles, memory banks and steel and carbonate plating were 'feeling' and it excited his imagination.
He squeezed the yoke and breathed through his mouth, willing himself to be calm. The vibration was now joined with a quiet but steady hum rising up from the decking. Everything was ready; the ship, the people, the stars. Everything. He looked to the turbolift and willed the captain to exit onto the deck and give him the order to launch.
He couldn't wait. _________________
