In my mind what really drew me to star trek as a young man was the enterprise crew. I loved it! The ship, the opportunity, the possibilities. Even as a young person, it was the way the people (alien or not) overcame adversity, faced challenge, and worked together. Even when the technology was there, it was always the "human" element that saved the day. My favorite was the relationship between Spock and McCoy. There has never, in my mind, been a more perfect example of different races, persons, whatever, meeting in the middle and becoming respectful friends.

It is the exact reason, when I found this site, that I chose to join as Uvek. The fact that someone who worked so hard to undermine the Federation can be now working to promote it totally intriques me.

I hope we are able (and it sure seems like you do), to explore the MIGHT BE's, the NEW races that could exist in the Gamma Quadrant, and how personal relationships are forged and strengthened thru gameplay.

For me, Star Trek is more than just entertainment, it is a road map for civilization. The social message of Star Trek is what the everlasting draw is for me. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. We are all one in the same. On the Kirk's Enterprise we had a Russian, a Japanese, a Black, a White, even an Alien all working together. The physical differences didn't matter because we are all the same on the inside.

People put Star Trek down because of its utopian ideals but I think that is what makes it strong. Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, Blade Runner and countless others, these are darker visions of Science Fiction, ones that we look at and say "I really don't want to be a part of that." I see Star Trek and I would want to be a part of that future.

At the end of Star Trek: First Contact, Captain Picard says to the 21st century engineer Lilly Sloane that he envied her, the new world that was opening up before her. The foundation of the world he came from was in the world she was stepping into. I see that and hope for us.

That and I like warp drive, phasers, photon torpedoes, shields, tricorders, disruptors, polaron beams, Bat'leths too.

I agree that Star Trek is a road map for what the future could be.

I love darker scifi like BSG and Star Wars, but I always seem drawn back into Roddenberry's universe. Even at its darkest, Star Trek paints a vision of the people where people have found the best of themselves and let them shine. A vision of the future where the color of your skin has less bearing then the strength of your character is exactly the future I want to live in.

Wow,

If you look at these posts you see a very common thread. I think we are all ready beginning to operate at as a Roddenberry team! We certainly share the vision of what one is.

Personally, I can't wait until we get this story out into the unknown, facing new and different creatures. One of my goals with this game is to present a whole new location to play in for us, kind of how DS9 did with the Bajorians and the Cardassians. Sure, they were in a few TNG episodes to introduce them, but Deep Space Nine is where they thrived and were given real character.

On the topic of Character Interactions:

I like how the characters are interacting in the short time we've been playing. Commander Qech and Major Ludwigsen have an interesting chemistry (though some of that may come from the fact they know each other IRL). The Major and the Security folk all seem to work well together which is very helpful. I enjoy T'Cor's interaction with the Major and Commander Qech too.

T'Cor is a character that really interests me, if he was a part of one of the shows I think he's be fun to watch. T'Cor has had a lifetime of experience in the Imperial Guard and has now chosen to enter Starfleet. That amount of experience gives him an interesting perspective.

Likewise with Lieutenant Calodan, his experiences during the war have made him into the Officer he is today, coloring his experiences. Not to mention the inner monologue about Trill Reassociation during the Conference Room scene.

I also have an interest in the relationship between the Captain and Qech. My wife and I thought long and hard about what we wanted to do with these characters. In our other RPGs we have had characters with romantic ties before and we've very much enjoyed that, but there is more to Role Playing with your spouse than role playing your love for one another. In another game, we played siblings for a brief time. In the end, we wanted some sort of past association. With her playing a Joined Trill, the pieces came together very quickly. Will Qech and the Captain become romantically involved? I really don't know, though my instincts tell me no. I think the better story would be from their intense trust of one another due to their knowledge of each other as well as a profound respect. A strong friendship, yes. A romantic relationship, I don't think so.

There is more I want to go into but I've got to dash. Hope you've enjoyed my perspective!

You two better not get all kissyfaced! I'll report you to the Symbiosis Commission! I'm a fink!

After Starfleet slapped me on the wrists for not following the rules (you'll see that soon) my character has become slightly...'by the book'.

All joking aside, we have characters that have a rich backstory. I like having the Cadets aboard, and do plan to start an "off-duty poker game" to do some more character melding. I like watching our characters learn more about each other and see how we, as the "puppet-masters" can use that info.
