Location: Deck 8 Crew Lounge "The Team Room", USS Hartington
Stardate: 54094.1 (February 4, 2377)
It had been two weeks since the incident with the stone aliens. Two weeks since the team had been recovered and the Hartington returned to its own time. Two weeks to cope and heal. Doctor Kiv had signed off on Uvek's return to duty, albeit restricted light duty due to his recovery. The Romulan walked down the corridor towards the Team Room, his mind at a blank for what could be awaiting him there. Yeomen M'Rowl had informed him that his presence was needed immediately but refrained from saying what exactly was so important to take him away from his duties.
Of course, as the Romulan rounded the corner and stepped through the large double doors, he could see at once what was going on.
Standing before him was a large assemblage of the crew he had served with for months. Crewmen and NCO's, Junior Officers and his own colleagues among the Senior Staff stood waiting for him to arrive. As he stepped through the doors, the group -- led by Lieutenant Ghan of all people -- burst into applause.
At the head of the group stood the Hartington's top three officers, Captain Brennon, flanked by Commander Qech and Lieutenant Calodan on either side. The Captain himself was clapping for his Tactical Officer but soon cut the motion short as he stepped towards Uvek, his left hand extended out towards the other man.
"Mr. Uvek, thank you for coming. Sorry for the subterfuge, but it was Commander Qech's idea. Something about a surprise party makes her laugh a little too hard." _________________

Uvek was a deep shade of green as he looked around, his gaze finally settling on Davynn. He smiled and took the captain's hand. "Thank you," he said while looking at the commander. His gaze shifted to the captain. "Thank you, sir. I...I do not know quite what to say. What is this all about?"
He was truly at a loss. Human customs were a mystery to him, and the mixture of the Federation was a complete puzzle, despite his years of working on its fringe. He looked around the room briefly as the captain responded, seeing Karl and Ted Smith, Dr. T'Lau, so many others. Why? Well, he was about to find out. _________________

Smith made his way to his Section Chief. Walking up to Uvek, he said: "Hi Boss... We're all glad to see you up and about. Is there anything we can do for you?" Ted cringed, waiting for Uvek's response... _________________

Uvek appraised his team member while shaking his head. "Thank you, Mr. Smith. I think not, but I appreciate the sentiment." He looked at the assembled crew as he and the captain made their way to Qech and Calodan.
"Truth be told, this should be for you and Mr. Koester as much as anybody. You were very brave and reacted exactly as you should have. Without your quick thinking, we would have o doubt suffered greater loss than crewman Mavers."
Uvek was clearly uncomfortable with the spotlight and not just because he had built a life avoiding it at all costs. He just didn't understand what he had done outside his duty. His reflexes had stopped the death of a crewmate and superior officer. Moreso, she was a friend. Romulan people could be very loyal and this one was no exception, despite his defection to Starfleet. It was a paradox he could live with, so long as his friends lived too. _________________

"Mr. Uvek, thank you for coming. Sorry for the subterfuge, but it was Commander Qech's idea. Something about a surprise party makes her laugh a little too hard."
"...Or maybe I just enjoy subterfuge" Qech added with a smile when the two of them approached. "There's something rewarding about seeing a Romulan blush." She grinned sardonically at Uvek, clearly enjoying the fact that they had completely blind-sided him with the celebration. She then looked to the Captain. "Well, I think we've tortured him long enough, maybe you should let him in on why he's here." _________________

"Well, I think we've tortured him long enough, maybe you should let him in on why he's here."
The Captain nodded, still smiling as he clasped his hands together.
"Quite right, Commander. Yeomen M'Rowl, if you would please."
The Caitian smiled and stepped forward, raising a boatswain's whistle to her lips. The assembled crew began to quiet as she blew out the ancient seafarer's call
"Attention to orders!"
The Captain stepped forward, the smile gone from his face, replaced with a stern look, all business. He looked over his Tactical Officer, eyes narrowed, eying the man from head to toe. Every detail of his uniform was within Starfleet regulations, as per usual, but still the Captain clicked his tongue.
"You're out of uniform, Mr. Uvek."
Although he stood straight at attention, a look of confusion was clear on Uvek's face, he truly didn't know what his Captain was talking about -- and Brennon knew that. He reached up and removed the Provisional Lieutenant Junior Grade insignia from Uvek's collar, holding it in his hand and shaking his head.
"I would have though you would be more astute, Mr. Uvek. Well, I suppose we'll have to let it slide this one time. Yeomen!"
The Captain's sharp call for his aid cracked out across the room like a whip, however she was ready as always. M'Rowl stepped forward and placed a small box into the Captain's outstretched hand. He held the box for several moments, running his fingers over the polished black lid, eyes never moving from Uvek's. Finally, after the long moments passed he spoke again.
"Your commitment to Starfleet has been affirmed time and time again, Mr. Uvek. You have risked your life, put yourself in harm's way, even dedicated yourself to a way of life very alien to you... all without expectation of thanks or acclimation. Today, though you did not seek it, I will give you the recognition you deserve."
He held out another hand, which M'Rowl filled quickly with a PADD. Drawing it back, the Captain looked down from Uvek's eyes and to the writing, reading aloud from it.
"To Captain David Brennon, USS Hartington. Starfleet Command has received your reports concerning your recent temporal incident. While all matters regarding time travel must be dealt with according to DTI Regulations, your report has displayed what we have reviewed on several occasions. Attached are orders issued to commend Lieutenant Junior Grade Uvek Suran for acts of heroism displayed on the recent mission, as well as recognizing his recent loss. Signed, Rear Admiral Telon, Starfleet Personnel."
Brennon passed the PADD back to M'Rowl and looked back up to Uvek. As he did, he opened the case and removed a small item from inside. With a smile he reached up and pinned it to the taller man's collar as he spoke again.
"Uvek, on my authority as Commanding Officer of this vessel, I hereby promote you to the rank of Lieutenant, with all the rights and privilege there in. It is also my honor to award you with the Bronze Star for heroism and meritorious conduct, and the Purple Heart in recognition of wounds you have suffered in the line of duty. Congratulations, Lieutenant Uvek."
As the last words came out of the Captain's mouth, the room erupted in applause and the Captain offered his newest Lieutenant his hand once more. _________________

A shock went through the tactical officer. He was sure he had fit his uniform properly, as always, and the words cut him deeply. But, he was standing at attention and would not move to adjust. At 6'5" he was looking slightly down into his captain's eyes and thought he caught the glint of something....a moment later he was pleasantly surprised (a common experience with this captain, he reflected) when the captain opened the black box.

He felt a deep sense of pride at the commendation, then a surge of embarrassment that Mavers would never share in this moment. Still, he was proud and grateful at the same time. He shook the captain's hand vigorously and then the others as they came forward.
"Thank you captain. Thank you very much. I am proud to serve with you, and my choice to join Starfleet was clearly the right one. I look forward to continuing my service." He moved to Qech.
"Thank you for this, Davynn. I am grateful for your support over the past two weeks and glad to have been a part of participating in your safety. I look forward to seeing your child's development, it is a fascinating experience to observe." _________________

Qech chuckled. She had recently switched a maternity uniform, the old one becoming a little too snug for comfort, which seemed to emphasize even more the fact that she was pregnant. "Try it from this end." She smiled. "But I look forward to the whole experience. Memories only go so far. And if you're thanking me for the surprise party, I can take credit for that. Getting the Captain to break routine is like pulling teeth. But I had nothing to do with the rest. It was all you, Lieutenant." She then waved him a little closer, and leaning forward she quietly added, her voice serious, "and this is an official function, Mr. Uvek. My casual name is not appropriate here." She gave him a look that clearly said 'I'll let it go this time' and the official tone in her voice disappeared once again, replaced by her usual smile.
"Now, go get some cake. That's an order." _________________

Koester grinned as he approached LT Uvek. In his left hand was a bottle with Cyrillic writing on the label.
"Sir. This is from my mother's region of Earth its a drink called vodka, Russia's premier alcoholic drink." Koester replied, "My maternal grandfather has a tradition of giving his spacefaring relations a bottle of vodka for special occasions. The word on the side is Cosmonaut which is Russian for spacefarer."
He handed the bottle to Uvek. |

Croft waited down the line as Uvek shook hands, when he reached his he gave him a strong hand shake. "Congrats, Lieutenant, it's well deserved." He smiled warmly. _________________

Uvek blushed again at his failure to keep protocol. Truth be told, he was still getting used to the functions of a starship and probably would for a year or so. "Thank you again, commander." He said sheepishly, as he moved off to find this cake she spoke of.
As he turned he found Karl Koester facing him with a bottle of some clear liquid in his hand.
"Sir. This is from my mother's region of Earth its a drink called vodka, Russia's premier alcoholic drink. My maternal grandfather has a tradition of giving his spacefaring relations a bottle of vodka for special occasions. The word on the side is Cosmonaut which is Russian for spacefarer."
He handed the bottle to a shocked Uvek who looked at it in gratitude.
"I am honored, Mr. Koester. I have never tried this and I look forward to it. Incidentally, thank you for your support on the planet. I have never gotten to say that, with the therapy and all. You are a fine soldier and a valuable member of the security detail."
Croft and Uvek shook hands and the Romulan smiled broadly. "Thank you Mr. Croft. I appreciate your comments." _________________

Calodan waited his turn to congratulate Lieutenant Uvek. After Croft and Koester had finished their congratulations, he stepped forward.
"Well Lieutenant, I guess you no longer have to sir me." He smiled to make sure that Uvek knew he was teasing him, "Congratulations on your promotion..you deserve it. Without you and your security team things could have gone a lot worse on the surface." Calodan shook Uvek's hand. "Now, let's say we get some cake before it's all gone. I've heard tell that Commander Qech can replicate up a mean Rigelian chocolate cake." _________________

"Replicate?" Came Qech's voice from across the room. "I don't even want to hear the word 'replicate' after what I had to go through to get Chef to let me use his precious kitchen for this thing" she said, gesturing to the cake. "I think he wanted my soul in exchange or something. No, not replicated. Sweat and blood... Though not literally." _________________

"I should hope not..."
Captain Brennon smirked as he lanced a piece of cake and muttered under his breath just before putting the delectable pastry into his mouth. _________________

"You might want to speak to Chef then Commander. I guess he was feeling threatened, he was the one that mentioned the replicator."
Calodan heard the Captain's mumble. "What was that sir? I didn't quite catch it." _________________
