"What was that sir? I didn't quite catch it."

By this point, the Captain's mouth was full of cake. Through his chewing, he mimed having a great deal of difficulty talking.

"Er... oh... Irrr..."

As though she had been waiting for such an instance, the fur laden hand of M'Rowl thrust out, offering a glass of milk to the Captain -- who took the glass with a dejected look. After taking a sip to 'clear his mouth' he looked back at his senior staff and smiled.

"Heh, forgot what I said..."

Quote:
Well Lieutenant, I guess you no longer have to sir me. Congratulations on your promotion..you deserve it. Without you and your security team things could have gone a lot worse on the surface. Now, let's say we get some cake before it's all gone. I've heard tell that Commander Qech can replicate up a mean Rigelian chocolate cake."

"Thank you, Lieutenant. Truth be told, you are still second officer, so yes I will likely still "sir" you." replied Uvek with a chuckle. "Thank you Mr. Calodan, I am glad you are well also, it was quite a moment." He looked to the table where Commander Qech was flashing a wicked glance in their direction. Uh oh, he thought, at least I am not the only one stepping on toes today! His mood lightened considerably as he considered the days events. The promotion was the validation he needed. He was Starfleet now, through and through.

"Heh, forgot what I said..."

Qech gave the Captain a 'Yeah, Sure' look. "Well Sir, since you were the first person to take the plunge... How's the cake?" She thought for a second, then added as an afterthought: "You know, if you do like it, do me a favor and tell Chef it was terrible. That goes for the rest of you too" she said to everyone who was waiting for a slice. "Maybe that will calm him down."

Qech wasn't worried. She'd already had a piece herself. And she had to admit... It was good cake. She decided not to mention the two failed attempts it took before she'd perfected her mother's recipe.

Calodan took two slices of cake and handed one to Uvek. The cake really did smell delicious and had that tell-tale look of being non-replicated. There was a thumbprint in the icing and the cake wasn't perfectly level and shaped. Definitely hand made...and tasted that much better for it.

"Commander, the cake is fantastic. I'll be sure to drop a hint to Chef that it was terrible and I far prefer his."

Qech smiled. "Thank you, Lieutenant. For both the compliment, and the very real possibility that you may have spared me from being slipped something unpleasant in my next meal."

Calodan laughed, "Just in case Commander, might want to stick to the replicator for a while or maybe keep a tricorder with you."

Uvek tasted the cake slowly but not cautiously. He was getting very accustomed to Federation food and customs and deserts was one of his favorites. He savored it and remembered the apple crisp he had while speaking to Mr. Croft.

"Very good Commander. For sure a more pleasant endeavor than paddling down rapids, I am sure. At least on this end of it." He smiled broadly, with chocolate coated teeth.

Standing to the side nibbling on a small slice of cake she watched the others as they celebrated. Seeing a moment of oppertunity to congradulate the newly appointed Lieutenant without to much interferance she walked towards him and smiled.

"Congratulations Sir. A well deserved promotion" she said and slowly walked back to an open space of the room to continue watching the party.

"Very good Commander. For sure a more pleasant endeavor than paddling down rapids, I am sure. At least on this end of it."

Qech finished swallowing her mouthful of cake and looked to Uvek. "Well that depends if you're referring to baking the cake, or eating the cake. I'd much rather face raging rapids than a raging cook again."

When Lieutenant Zeara approached the Romulan, Qech found herself wondering how the betazoid had been feeling. She seemed to have a tendency to close herself off, and these past two weeks were no exception. Before she could say anything, Zeara had disappeared to the other side of the room again. With a polite nod to her colleagues, Qech followed her to her corner.

"Enjoying the party, Lieutenant?"

Seeing the Commander approach her she smiled at the woman.

"Yes. Thank you. It's a good celebration." she said and took another bite of the cake. Though her mind had healed itself, she was still a bit hesitant with interacting amoung others. She wasn't used to opening herself up to others, but she knew that she needed to learn to do so.

"It's been a while since the staff has had a chance to interact off duty. Interesting to watch all the different personas blend."

"Indeed I am referring to eating, Commander. Cooking belongs to the patient I am afraid." He turned and shook the ship's counselor's hand.

Quote:

"Thank you counselor. I am pleased to see you recovering. It was a tough situation and I am glad you did not get physically injured." He smiled to reassure her that he knew of mental torment (the images of Tal'harton inquisitors moved his mind from time-to-time to a dark place) and he understood those wounds can be more serious than physical ones at times..

He lifted his artificial hand and considered it. "Truth be told, Lieutenant, I thought sure I would have to consult you for this. But, I think I can handle it with the proper stimulus."

Qech nodded. "I'm glad we had this opportunity actually. The crew in general has been so downright melancholy lately, and for good reasons. It's amazing what one little party can do."

As she looked around the room, her eyes narrowed slightly in a mock look of disapproval. "Although it looks to me like Mr. Calodan is using this opportunity to recruit for his pool." With a light laugh, she looked back toward the Diplomatic Officer. "Have you been roped into this yet? He's cornered half the crew by now."

"It would seem an oppertune time for him to do so Sir, so you can't hold to much against him." she said and looked away for a moment as if searching for the right words to use.

"He hasn't approached me about the pool yet... though I'm sure he has his reasons." she paused a moment then spoke hesitantly, almost as if she was unsure she voice the next thought she had.

"Actually, a good portion of the crew seems to avoid contact with me in the last two weeks. I suppose I haven't dealt as well with the after effects of the last away mission as some have. I'm sure that I've been a little... off-putting, and it's created a wall I had no intenion of building." she shook her head at herself then.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have set that upon your shoulders, you have enough to deal with as it is." she said with an appologetic smile.

Qech shook her head, smiling. "You haven't put anything on my shoulders, Lieutenant. I'm glad you brought it up actually, because I couldn't help but notice you're standing a bit away from everyone else."

She lowered her voice slightly, and spoke a little softer for privacy's sake. "The physical damage has been healed, but you of all people should know that tragedy leaves its mark. I know you've been dealing with personal loss on top of what happened during the away mission, and trust me, I understand. I really do. Have you considered speaking with Counselor Solek?"

Koester came by with another gift. This was in a slender box. He handed the box to Uvek.

"Sir this particular invention is a hand weapon used by the Spetsnaz an elite force from 20th and 21st Century Earth." Koester said: "One of my ancestors used it in combat more than once and I used a replica of this weapon."

Koester took out a knife from the box. "This is called a ballistic knife. It can be used as a standard knife in close in fighting but it also has a hidden surprise. Press the small button with your thumb and propel the blade of the knife at around 65 kilometers per hour. It can and does reliably puncture both Jem'Hadar and Cardassian body armor. I figured you could use this as another hand weapon and deceptive midrange weapon as well."
