Oliver stood up from behind his desk, and picked up his badge of it. He had taken it off to see if it would look nicer on his scrubs - and then realised that he couldn't put it on thier anyway, the colours would clash.
After affixing it to his chest once more, he tapped it, and spoke.
"Commander Qech, Dr. newell here, it's time for your first scan! Please report to sickbay as soon as convienient, thank you ma'am."
Walking out of his office, and into Dr. Kiv's, he tapped on the wall with his pen and smiled as she looked up.
"I've asked the Commander to report for her scan, unless your were busy, i was hoping you would do it?"

"I wil take that as a no," the doctor said, Kiv giving him a raised eyebrow as if to say 'are you kidding me, look at the mound of paperwork i've got here!' Oliver walked round and began wiping down the Bio bed in preperation for the commanders arrival.

Two days before Lieutenant Uvek's promotion party

Doctor Kiv stepped out of her office and moved over towards Doctor Newell. The man was nothing if not diligent, a good trait in a physician though it could be trying at time. Sighing she stepped to the man as he finished sterilizing the biobed.

"Doctor, I'd like you to assist in my scans of Commander Qech today. As she's the only expectant mother on board the Hartington, this is a very good opportunity for you to get some hands on experience with pregnancy and its effects on a crew. After all, we're not just healers, we're also confidants and friends to the crew under our care."

As she finished speaking, Commander Qech entered into the room. The Trill was itching at her hand in an almost mindless fashion, as though she wasn't thinking of it. Kiv made a note of it and ushered the woman over to her.

"Commander, thank you for coming. Doctor Newell will be assisting today. We're just going to run a few prenatal scans and run a quick scan over you to log your pregnancy's progress in the computer. Shall we begin?"

Over the next thirty minutes, the doctors went over every facet of the Commander's pregnancy to date. Nothing was left out, and Kiv could sense the coldness in the room when she had to bring up the incident with the Tal'Harton several weeks prior, though she chalked it up to Qech's apprehension at dwelling on the subject.

Near the end of the examination, Doctor Kiv came across some redness on Qech's hand. While it had all the signs of an allergic reaction -- and her tricorder confirmed it -- she thought his would make an excellent test of her associate's knowledge. She turned briefly to Doctor Newell and motioned to the area of redness.

"Doctor, do you have any thoughts on this?"

She looked back to Qech, smiling and ran another scan of the affected area which confirmed her suspicions. After Newell's response, she looked up from her tricorder and straight at her friend.

"Seafood, Davynn?"

Qech did her best to keep her reservations about Dr. Newell to herself, but she wasn't so sure she'd managed when the topic of the Tal'Harton incident came up. The memories of her abuse still kept her from sleeping through the night. The nightmares were prominent, almost perfect recordings of the incident. Qech could thank the symbiont for that. It was like having a clear 'backlog' of all her memories, as well as those who shared the symbiont before her. But some memories she'd just rather not keep; one such example was the behavior of Dr. Newell when he was called upon by the Tal'Harton to testify that she and her baby were in good health. He supported them, despite the evidence that his colleagues had been mistreated. And did he protest when she and Uvek were beaten nearly to death? He stood there...

Qech focused on that image, so clear in her mind; Dr. Newell... just standing there, while she and Uvek were brutalized. She closed her eyes, fighting against the wave of cold emotions what swelled in her chest. She did not look at him for the remainder of the session.

Suddenly she realized Dr. Kiv was speaking and holding the Trill's hand, palm-up, scanning over the redness that had left Davynn's mind the moment she had entered sickbay. After a brief discussion with Dr. Newell, Kiv looked squarely down at her.

"Seafood, Davynn?"

At the mention of her hand, Qech's desire to scratch resurfaced, almost impulsively. She bit her lip and restrained from acting on the impulse.

"Shrimp." She sighed. "I only touched it, obviously, but... Well I didn't mean to. I wasn't myself... Literally." She rolled her eyes slightly on that last word, a little ashamed of herself for once again losing control of her memories, and her identity. This once very rare occurrence had been happening much more frequently since the Tal'Harton's exam table. "Evijan was a big shellfish lover."

Doctor Kiv's brow wrinkled and she tapped a few keys on her tricorder before closing it up. This confusion Qech was talking about was common among newly Joined Trill, however Davynn had been host to Qech for almost two years. Despite her lack of formal training, any confusion should have faded away by this point. Programing her hypo for an antihistamine, she pressed the device to her patient's skin and probed a little deeper into the other woman's mental state.

"Tell me a little about Evijan, Commander. He was your fourth host, yes? The Gambler?"

"Tell me a little about Evijan, Commander. He was your fourth host, yes? The Gambler?"

Qech was slightly confused why she was being asked about a former host, but she was obliged to answer just the same.

"I suppose 'Gambler' would be the loosest term you could use. He didn't limit himself to casinos. It wasn't the money he cared about, it was the risk, and the thrill. I suppose 'competition nut' comes closer to describing him. Fighting styles, card games, racquetball... He'd go to the end of the universe just to learn something new and then beat the masters at their own game."

She looked back up at Doctor Kiv, knowing that the Doctor wasn't simply curious about her seafood-loving fourth host. "And if you're wondering, yes. This has happened before. Not just with Evijan, though I find his personality the hardest to restrain. It started after they, um... That is, the Tal'Harton..." her voice trailed off and she looked away, not wanting to go back to that place.

Doctor Kiv had been running neurological scans of the Commander as she spoke of her host. Thus far, there had been little to report. As per normal, the host's isoboramine levels were elevated when discussion a past host, but nothing to suggest becoming lost within the memories or allowing the host to be subsumed by the urges... at least not at the moment. It was very possible for such events to occur, however rare they may be. She closed her tricorder and looked her friend in the eye.

"Have you considered speaking with one of the counselors about this? Maybe they'd be able to give you a little clarity, help keep you grounded."

"Have you considered speaking with one of the counselors about this? Maybe they'd be able to give you a little clarity, help keep you grounded."

Qech bit her lip in thought. "I seriously considered it after..." she held up her hands, though the redness and swelling was going down. She sighed, dropping her hands in her lap. "I can't afford to make that mistake again. Next time I might get so far as actually putting it in my mouth. I've only done that once, when I was first joined. Same problem, only it was understandable then and my mother was right there when it happened."

The Trill shook her head as she recalled the incident. "Thank goodness she's a Doctor too. Though I've never seen her freak out quite like that..." She laughed slightly, looking back up to Dr. Kiv, who was listening to her every word. "I don't know why this is happening now. I thought I left all that uncertainty behind me. I guess I'll try and speak to Counselor Solek."

She nodded as her friend spoke, noting that Doctor Newell had the good sense to take his leave as the conversation became a little more personal, more intimate. Lonara put her hand on Davynn's shoulder, giving her a friendly squeeze and a supportive smile before she continued speaking.

"Well, no matter what happens, I'll be here to help you through this. If worse comes to worse we can give you a neural-sedative to block our the signals from the symbiont.... not on a permanent basis, just until we can figure out what's going on. We won't let you get hurt because of this. There has to be a reason. I'm going to schedule a time to run a more in depth analysis of you and of Qech itself. I'm no expert on Trill and Symbiont physiology, but maybe I'll stumble onto something."

Qech considered the possibilities for a moment. Her brow furrowed as she looked up at Dr Kiv. "Well that would be... Strange. I know I haven't been joined for very long, not in the grand scheme of things anyway, but to suddenly lose my connection with the symbiont, even if I knew it was temporary... I don't know. Somehow the very idea just sounds, well, frightening." She shivered slightly as she said the last word. "I'd like to avoid that possibility if we can. I know it's still on the table, but it definitely has 'last resort' potential."

She bit her lip, trying to push the images of what it might feel like out of her mind. "When did you want to schedule the appointment?"

Doctor Kiv nodded with sympathy and tapped out a few commands on her PADD.

"I understand your hesitance to that type of procedure, Davynn, all I ask is for you to keep an open mind. As for your next appointment, how does after the party the day after tomorrow sound to you?"

The Commander nodded. "That sounds fine. I'll make an appointment with Counselor Solek afterward. Lieutenant Zeara has had enough mental strain without having to deal with a distressed symbiont."

Doctor Kiv nodded and helped the First Officer down from the biobed. She loaded up another hypo and handed it out to Qech.

"This has a stronger dose of the antihistamine I used to treat your reaction. If you start feeling it again take the injection and call me straight away. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that you need to be very careful where shellfish is concerned... well, I'll see you the day after tomorrow, if not sooner. Feel better, Commander-Doctor"

Qech nodded and took the hypo with her back to her quarters, feeling more than a little anxious about the appointment she'd be facing in two days' time. She strongly hoped that Dr. Kiv would be able to find whatever was wrong with the symbiont before she made another stupid, and possibly fatal, mistake.
