USS Guardian - Main Bridge
Lt Mehvra Kuplo
Mehv sits at the Engineering station carefully watching the telemetry data for the new and upgraded systems as Ops brings them online. Every once in a while he taps his badge and issues a command to one of his many teams positioned at critical locations throughout the ship. "Team 6, reset plasma flow regulator at junction T8." "Team 2, please verify normal status of phase coupler in deflector main power input."
As time passes his order become fewer and further between. Things are running rather smoothly, so far. He was even able to spare enough time to turn and smile at Lt JG McKenna, who was working furiously over at the ops station bringing the systems online. _________________

USS Guardian Ready Room
Captain Marek
Marek sat at his desk, finishing a few minor reports as he waited for the all clear from Chief Kuplo. He looked up as a chime sounded at the door.
"Enter."
The Myosian, Dorin, entered, limping over to the desk and taking the offered chair. His limp appeared to have improved over the last week. Marek gave the man his undivided attention as the Myosian spoke.
"Captain Marek, first, I would like to personally thank you for rescuing me, not only from being stranded on that planet but from the clutches of the Tal'Harton." He was obviously nervous, as he clutched the PADD like device in his hands.
Marek nodded, "You are most welcome, I am pleased we could be of service."
Dorin cleared his throat, then continued, "I would like to make a request if I may," he paused, then continued when Marek only nodded, "I wish to stay with your crew. " Marek started to interrupt, but Dorin plowed on, "I am an anthropologist, and my area of study has been ridiculed by many of my people, but with the discovery of the artificial life-form, my theories have been vindicated! We know of several ruins of what must be Alterran colonies. I have theorized that it was an artificial life-form but the only proof I had was the lack of any form of food, or other life supporting systems in the ruins. I would like to stay and study the creature if I may. I would be a great asset, I know much about this region of space." Dorin trails off as Marek holds up his hand.
"It would be highly unorthodox to accept this request. You have not attended Starfleet Academy, and know little of Starfleet protocols." He plowed on as Dorin tried to interrupt, "However, you do make a valid point, your knowledge of this region of space would be beneficial. I am also in need of a Diplomatic officer." Marek pauses for a moment, letting Dorin squirm.
"I believe you would be a benefit to the crew, I will speak with Commander Talbert to arrange for a crew member to train on proper protocol." Dorin begins to thank Marek in everyway possible, Marek let's him continue for a moment, then holds up his hand again. "If you would excuse me, I have work to do." He stands, then leads Dorin to the door, who continues to thank him. Once the Myosian is finally gone, Marek walks back to his desk. He has just enough time to sit and pick up a PADD when the door chime goes off again. He raises an eyebrow,
"Enter."
Lenara entered when the Captain responded, a smile on her face. She was carrying several PADDs. "Captian Marek, may I have a moment of your time?" She crossed the room quickly and sat in the chair offered her.
"Captain, I wish to make a request," She handed one of the PADDs to him, "These are my test scores for acceptance to Starfleet Academy. I wish to join the crew in an official capacity."
Marek glanced at the PADD, noting without surprise that the scores where perfect,
"It would be difficult for you to get to Earth from here, it would likely be years before you could attend, not to mention a minimum of a year training for a non-commissioned officer."
Lenara smiled again, "Captain, I am sure you are aware that Starfleet Regulations allow an officer to be accepted on a provisional basis when previous experience is sufficient to compensate for Academy training."
Marek arched an eyebrow, "I was under the impression that you had never been activated, do you have previous experience that qualifies you to be a Starfleet Officer?"
Lenara shifts slightly in her seat, "As you are aware, I downloaded massive amounts of data from the ships computer core before I was activated. I have the knowledge of hundreds of years of Starfleet history and tactics at my disposal in nano-seconds. I also have extensive databases on every ship design currently in use by Starfleet. I am capable of handling every station on the bridge, every task required for an engineer, and could even perform surgery if required. I require, however, experience to be able to accept a command position. I am asking for that opportunity now, on a provisional basis. Let me join your crew and prove myself."
Marek glanced back at the PADD, then back at the Alterran. "I will confer with Commander Talbert, you have made a good case for a provisional commission."
Lenara smiled again, "Thank you, Captain. If I may make one more suggestion?" She hands the second PADD over, "I have been studying the data storage unit that was recovered when I was found. I found reference to an Alterran station that used to be in this region of space. I believe it would be worth the trip to see if it is still there."
Marek studied the PADD for a moment, then looked up at Lenara, "I will take your suggestion under advisement. Is there anything else?" Lenara shook her head and stood. Marek walked her to the door, then turned back to his desk, tapping his combadge.
"Commander Talbert, please report to my ready room." _________________

(OOC: since I'm not really sure on where things stand and who's where and what's what... I'm going to post and hope it's all in the right here..)
She felt she'd been staring at the screen of her station for an endless count of heartbeats and had yet to come across anything noteworthy or out of the ordinary. Things seems to be flowing smoothly and yet she still had another four hours on her shift. teach me for taking on a longer shift schedule... Feeling the call of nature clawing at her bladder, she took a deep breath and flagged her relief over to the station.
With a nod she turned toward the turbo lift and started on her way to her quarters. She'd pulled a longer shift then she prefered, but she'd commited to it... but needed a short break and wanted to run some cold water over her face.
twenty mintues... I just want twenty minutes away from that screen...and after the shift is done, a very strong drink! _________________

Talbert entered the captain's ready room with the air of a man who was on the go.
"Sorry, sir," he reported "I had to deal with some personnel issues in supply. Apparently some crewmen were gambilng in the forward hold during duty shifts. I apologize for my tardiness."
He stood before his captain waiting for whatever was required of him. _________________

Marek watched his officer for a moment, a slight absentminded smile on his face. He couldn't help but be amused by the previous two visitors to his office.
"Roger, I need your opinion on a few matters. First off, the Myosian, Dorin, has requested to stay with the crew. He wishes to study Lenara, and the rest of the crew I am sure. I am inclined to agree to his request, his knowledge of the region would be most beneficial." Marek paused for a moment, then continued, "Secondly, Lenara has requested to join the crew with a provisional commission." He picks up a PADD and hands it to Talbert, "It appears she has taken every test from the Academy she could find. As expected from one with a neural processor for a brain, she passed every test flawlessly. Logic fails me on this problem, I see equal arguments for and against allowing this. I would be grateful for your input." He shifts slightly in his chair, allowing Talbert to digest all the information he just received. _________________

Talbert sat in his customary chair, leaning back and rubbing his ear thoughtfully. After a moment he looked up.
"Well, sir, Dorin's experiences may well be just the ticket right now, given the fact that we are heading into his backyard. I'd like to set up a debriefing for him and dig out some of the things we will encounter shortly, maybe give us an edge. We can certainly put him on probation and see if he pans out. There's nothing wrong with that."
He continued, "As far as Lenara, there is no question her capabilities would be an asset. I don't think I'm comfortable having Dorin study her, like some piece of equipment; after all, she is sentient. But, with her permission and his expertise, we might gain more. A provisional appointment wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, either, though I can't see giving her any authority over the crew just yet. Maybe appoint her special advisor to Operations or something. I know Lt. Thomas could use the help. Better still, let her work with Mehv. That seems like a more natural fit, given they worked together on her ship and all."
Talbert leaned back, unsure if he had said too much, but confident the captain would make up his own mind. "At any rate, sir, that's my two cents. Whatever you decide will be the right decision, I'm sure." _________________

Marek thought for a long moment, then responded, "I will give her a field commission of Ensign, with the understanding that she is to follow orders, not give them. I will have her work under Lt. Thomas, we are short handed at Ops at the moment, and I believe her skills will suit that position best. She will likely be working under Mehvra on Gamma shift, so that would also be a benefit." He stands motioning for Talbert to follow, "Shall we see if we are ready to depart?" _________________

Talbert exited with his captain, moving to his chair on the bridge. Vanquax was at Tactical and the Alpha shift was ready to go.
I love this, thought the XO. A decisive captain, a strong crew, a good ship. Everything is as it should be.
It was time for round 2. _________________

As the Captain and First Officer exited the ready-room, Mehv looked over to McKenna, who was also looking at him and gave a nod. The ship was ready. As good as new, maybe better.
"Captain, the Guardian is ready for departure on your order." _________________

Marek took the Command Chair, sitting as only a Vulcan can with his back ramrod straight.
"Ensign Tanaka, as soon as we are cleared for departure, take us out of dock, thrusters only."
Tanaka responded with an "Aye sir." and a few moments later, the slight vibration can be felt as the ship slowly accelerates from a dead stop. Another moment and the ship is headed away from Panthanel IV.
"Accelerate to 1/4 impulse on heading 215.5 mark 2. Once we are clear of the system, warp 8. Let's 'stretch her legs' as you humans would say." Marek watched as the crew attended to their duties, glad to have the ship back in service. _________________

ACTION
After several hours of traveling at warp 8, the crew relaxes a bit, assured that all systems are functioning properly. Captain Marek calls for a meeting in the Staff room of the senior staff. As the crew enters, they are mildly surprised to see Dorin and Lenara in attendance. _________________

Talbert took a seat along side the captain. He was interested in how quickly the captain acted after a decision was made. Still, that was a quality he respected and was sure it would make the difference in many ways over the next few months.
After a brief greeting to the two visitors, he laid a recording PADD on the table and activated it for his personnel records. _________________

feeling strange as she walked into the conference as a requested officer... and had a seat that was meant for her.
still not used to this... she thought to herself as she tried to steal a glance around the room offering a timid smile to Talbert as she stole glances around the room. _________________
