The senior officers and several of the engineering staff are assembled in the main lounge (The one room sure to hold the large number of officers present). Captain Marek is there, but he was standing to one side, watching the events unfold and trusting Roger to handle things. Commander Talbert moved to the center of the room, calling Lieutenant Kuplo forward.
"Attention to Orders. Lieutenant Mehvra Kuplo, in recognition of your consistent work ethic, character and leadership the Captain of the U.S.S. Guardian has authorized me to officially identify you as the ship's Second Officer, with all authority and priviledges thereto." He stepped forward and extended his hand. "On behalf of Captain Marek and myself, congratulations Mr. Kuplo, we know you will represent the ship and your crew well in your new duties." _________________

listening to the announcement of Kuplo's promotion she couldn't help but chuckle internally. So many changes had transpired over the course of a few weeks and she still couldn't believe she'd been a part of it.
After the applause died down and a few people had a chance to give congratualtions she moved forward to shake his hand.
"Congrats Sir. May you exceed expectations." she said with a smile. _________________

Marek shook hands with Kuplo, something his Vulcan upbringing struggled with at times, but was common practice in Starfleet.
"Congratulations, Mehvra, I know the ship will be under exceptional leadership on Gamma shift. I suspect your ability to go without sleep will be of great benefit." _________________

Lt Mehvra-Kuplo
Standing slowly, he looked around at all the people gathered. Even though Cmdr Talbert had notified him earlier, it was still hard to believe it was true. A smile spread wide on his face, seeing the new friends he'd made; his new family. After the tragic loss of his upsol, this was the best outcome he could imagine. He had found a new home.
The emotions that he was feeling was readily apparent to all those around him. A tear slowly moved down his cheek as he walked towards Cmdr Talbert, eventually getting lost in his beard. Being from a culture with little privacy, he felt no shame or embarrassment.
Cmdr Talbert wrote: | On behalf of Captain Marek and myself, congratulations Mr. Kuplo, we know you will represent the ship and your crew well in your new duties. | "Thank you, sir. I look forward to the new duties and responsibilities."

He would be damned before he would let anything happen to his new family.
Lt JG Zeara wrote: | Congrats Sir. May you exceed expectations. | "Thank you Lieutenant. I never got a chance to ask you how you are acclimating to your new position. How's it going?" _________________

She paused a moment in order to process how best to answer him.
"It's been different. Very long time since a command has put that kind of trust in me, and I'm... adjusting to it." she said and tried to keep any doubt out of her voice. _________________

After a thoughtful pause, "I suppose now that I have some authority, or at least a voice towards those in authority, let me know what assistance I can provide." His thoughtful expression widens into a big grin. _________________

Talbert walked up to Lt. Vanquax and offered her a glass of Myosian ale. It was a sweet nectar-based fermentation with a mild but pleasant effect; a sort of elongated buzz without the overwhelming effects. He sipped his and said: "Lieutenant, I hope you enjoyed your leave. It may be the last one for a while. Do anything interesting?" _________________

Taking the offered drink she sipped from it and gave a small smile as the sweet taste flowed over her lips.
"Thank you Sir. I did enjoy my leave... and I managed to get a message sent out to my sister. I haven't seen her in several years, and it's only with the occasional message that we stay in contact." she said and took a deep breath "The last one I recieved was just before my transfer to this ship... it informed me that my sister was engaged, and my brother had been married leaving me as the only child unattached to anyone, not that it's any concern to you... oh my I'm rambling..." she said and flushed a light shade of blue.
she cleared her throat and smiled "You do anything interesting Sir?" she said with a tightness to her voice. _________________

Talbert shook his head, amused at the Liuetenant's obvious discomfort. "Nothing much. Lt. Thomas and I organized the ship's refit mostly. I wanted to mention that I'm looking forward to the proficiency reports due next week. Roekil didn't have much time with this crew, so your stamp is going to be evident."
Even as he said it, Roger was aware that the comment probably put Vanquax under even more pressure than she was all ready placing on herself. Taking command of 200 or so armed crewmen is a daunting task under the best of circumstances. Being Chief of Security for a Federation starship is nothing light and Talbert knew Vanquax had her hands full and then some. He tried another track.
"What I mean to say is that you are settling in well and it's evident you have a vision for the crew. You'll do well in this post." He drained his drink, feeling like an idiot for not being able to make small talk even in this familiar setting. _________________

(OOC: Just realized I got the character name wrong on my posts. Should have been VanQuax, not Zeara. I guess I rely a little bit too much of the post headers when they are there and should double check before submitted. I apologize for any confusion.) _________________

At the mention of the reports her face lost all color and her translucent skin went white. Suddenly she realized she must look like an animal in headlights.
"What I mean to say is that you are settling in well and it's evident you have a vision for the crew. You'll do well in this post." He drained his drink, feeling like an idiot for not being able to make small talk even in this familiar setting.
With a nervous chuckle she downed the nearly full drink in her hand. "Glad to know someone thinks I'm doing well... I feel like a blundering fool most days" she said as she looked down into her empty cup. "I guess I'm just not accustomed to doing well on a crew... and I seem to have finished my drink..." she muttered as she looked back up at him feeling just as idiotic because her skills at small talk seemed to be failing her... which was unusual for her.
She paused a moment and chuckled. "I find it amusing that I seem to lose my ability to speak like an adult when I'm in your company..." she said and felt her skin regain some of the blue tone flush she had before, unsure if it was the drink she'd downed or something else. _________________

"Well," replied Talbert, taking her glass and moving to the table. "Don't let them see you sweat." It was the only advice he could offer. Something stirred through them while they were talking and suddenly, Talbert felt very uncomfortable. It wasn'tt hat Vanquax wasn't attractive in her blue=skinned way or fit or even a competent officer. It was just that she was an officer on a ship that Talbert was in part responsible for. A member of his team.
With conflicting emotions flowing around him, he refilled her glass and handed it back, not taking one for himself. Awkwardly he handed it back to her and made the only excuse he could.
"I, ah, I better see to our guest of honor. Excuse me." He moved quickly over to Mehv, who was chatting up Lenara and Professor Dorin. _________________

As Talbert approached Dorin was talking to animatedly to Lenara.
"That's fascinating, unbelievable almost. How many worlds did your people occupy at your peak?" He had a PADD in one hand and a drink in the other and was swinging both as he spoke.
Lenara had her hands clasped behind her back and a bemused look on her face as she spoke, "Just before our first contact with the Borg, we had permanent settlements on 71 different planets, and various temporary settlements on 21 more. Within two years we were reduced to half of that number."
Dorin put down his drink and began typing into his PADD rapidly as she spoke, bouncing slightly on his good leg. _________________

taking the drink he had offered her she watched as he excused himself and walked away. standing there for a moment with a confused expression trying to process the last few minutes. shaking her head as if to clear it all away she took a sip from her drink and looked around at the others gathered. _________________
