Adelia watched her son grab an apple from the bin and walk over crunching on it. She had to smile as the vision of a ten year old Kyle came into view, eagerly hunting for his favorite snack.

Kyle kissed his mom on the cheek and noticed it was moist. He sat down opposite her at the table and frowned. "Not you, too, mother." He said with resignation. Adelia had been his strongest supporter in joining the Academy, and it would break his heart to learn of her defection to his father's point of view. She turned her head away and quickly wiped her eyes.

"No, no, darling." She replied unevenly. "I just realized that you are really leaving." She looked back at him and love and pride filled her now clear green eyes, the color he inherited from her, just as he had gotten her hair and fair skin.

"I promised your father I would not weep when this day came. I guess I'm just a foolish old woman." She rose and moved to the counter, picking up a small refrigeration pack. "I made you some food for the trip." Kyle started to protest, but she raised a hand and her voice took a tone that he knew only too well meant shut up and take this. "You must look after yourself now, Kyle, and bring those men and women home safely. You have a lot of responsibility on your shoulders, but I know you; I raised you. You are stronger than you know, and stronger than your father will admit."

"Thank you, mother." He managed weakly. He rose and hugged and kissed her. "Tell dad I love him. And you know I love you too. Promise me you will be ok."

His mom leaned back, gently touching his face, and looked into his eyes. "Well," she said with gentle affection. "I think that is one promise I can keep."
