Marek stood at the view port, his new pip a conscious weight on his neck. He watched is his new ship, the Valley Forge, pulled into dock. He stood with his hands clasped behind his back, his face neutral, but inside he felt a growing excitement. Try as he might to attain a Vulcan state of calm, he couldn't completely stifle the growing excitement of his first XO position. His career was progressing as he hoped, he had proven his ability time and time again, and now was one step away from is own command. He calculated that it would take at least five years before he would command his own vessel, if all went well. His combadge chirped at him, he calmly tapped it,
"Marek here."

"Commander, you are requested at docking port 12, the Valley Forge is completing docking procedures."

"I am on my way."

"Good luck and Godspeed Commander." Marek raised a brow,

"Thank you."

Marek began striding purposefully down the corridor, making his way towards the access port. He turns the corner and see's his new CO, Captain Raymond, shaking hands with the woman he was replacing. Commader Staples was going to be promoted to Captain and given the command of an Akira class starship that was launching next month. As Marek approached, they both laughed at a joke Captain Raymond had apparently just made. Marek nodded to Staples, then addressed the Captain,

"Commander Marek, reporting for duty, sir."

Captain James Raymond sized up his new First Officer for a moment. Raymond was a good deal older than most Captain's in Starfleet, while his contemporaries had long since moved up the chain of command or had retired, he continued to command his ship. At this point, it was a yearly request for him to accept a promotion to admiral, but his reply was always the same, that he hadn't trained that final officer yet. Raymond had a reputation for turning out the best command officers in the fleet. His former officers that had been promoted to Captain were some of the finest in the fleet, and Raymond prided himself in that fact. Marek was the first Vulcan he had accepted as a First Officer. One might assume that Raymond was somewhat prejudiced when it came to his officers, but that wasn't the case. Raymond knew many fine Vulcan officers, but one of the first things Raymond looked for in an officer was passion. Passion to excel, passion to protect ones crew, passion to complete the mission at hand. What had impressed Raymond about Marek wasn't his Vulcan near perfect grades at the academy, or his broad skill set, but a certain incident that happened at his first posting. Marek was a science officer on board the Nebula class starship Europa. They were studying a singularity that had been found near the Talos system. After some shield modifications, the Second Officer ordered the ship to enter the singularity. Marek calculated that the modifications wouldn't hold and that the ship would sustain heavy damage if they proceeded. An argument ensued, culminating in Marek knocking the officer unconscious. Marek spent two days in the brig, but was finally released when the ship was damaged by the singularity and needed all hands to make repairs to limp to the nearest shipyard. Raymond prized an officer that would stick to their guns for what they believed, although not necessarily in that manner.
Raymond smiled warmly, offering his hand even though he knew Vulcan's shied away from such contact. Marek hesitated only a moment, then firmly shook hands.

"Welcome Commander, I hope you enjoy your new post."
Marek raised an eyebrow,
"I look forward to serving under you Captain, I will do my best not to disappoint."
Raymond laughed,
"I imagine you will." He glanced at Commander Staples, "We best get a move on, they just changed our orders. Apparently Commander Sisko has already stirred things up there at Deep Space 9. They want the Valley Forge in the sector in case the Cardassian's try anything else. Not that it will matter, it will take a week at warp 6 to get there." Raymond shook his head, "I'll show you your new quarters Marek, follow me."
