Uvek stood at his commanding officer's door, the chime fading. He knew he needed to talk to someone. He also knew no one onboard knew his legacy, the real reason he was here in the Gamma Quadrant under the watchful eye of Admiral Dwyer, outside the captain. So, the captain it was.

Uvek had never asked the captain of his personal feelings regarding having this romulan 'traitor' onboard, nor had he taken time to worry about it, but it was a source of concern. No doubt Brennon had been aware of the increase in secretive transmissions and secure communications taking place on his ship, and though they were not meant to hide from his scrutiny, he was nonetheless outside the loop.

It was time to close that loop, decided the tactical officer. Time to fully confide in the captain what he had learned over the past four days, and try to find some direction in this confusing maze he had opened in his mind.

He waited for the chime to be answered.

Looking up at the door chimes, the Captain beckoned his unexpected guest into his sanctum.

"Come in."

Uvek dipped his head in respect to the captain, as he motioned him to a seat. Uvek sat down and gathered his thoughts.

"I am sorry to bother you, sir," he started. "But I need to talk to you. Four days ago I received a transmission from Admiral Dwyer that my father was dying and my mother was trying to reach me before that time." Uvek's eyes shone in the office lighting, but he held his composure.

"I realize that much of my life is necessarily a mystery to you and the crew, and for security reasons much has been concealed by Starfleet. But I want you to know some things about me, and ask for your advice." He looked down at his hands as he spoke.

"My mother was the governess of a small province outside the captial city of Xantherope. My father was administrator of a pintale, a university. It was due to these posts that I was able to join the RDF and be assigned to the flagship R'Hannan in the first place. After my...move to Starfleet, they were publically humiliated and stripped of their titles. Three weeks ago, the head of my former section Drayal came to see my parents. I suspect it was because Starfleet has done a superb job laying false trails for the Tal Shiar, and despite their own self-esteem, they are far less entwined in the Federation that they would care to admit." He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and looking at his captain.

"From what I can gather he took my father for several days. When he was returned, he was near death. My mother had arranged for him to be transported to Risa in an effort to meet me in safety before he died. He never made it."

Now Uvek's expression changed. Captain Brennon had seen the glint in his eye before, when the romulan spoke of the Tal'harton.

"From what I can gather, Drayal had my father arrested and both he and my mother were executed some two weeks ago." Uvek set his jaw and the look in his eye grew dark and more fixed.

"I request permission for a personal leave. I suspect I will need approximately twelve days."

The Captain sat for several moments, listening to his Tactical Officer's tale followed by silent contemplation. His face was, as usual during such crucial moments, unreadable. Finally Brennon spoke up, his eyes having never left Uvek's.

"Lieutenant, first let me say I am sorry for your loss. My own father was killed in the line of duty and as a Captain I am very aware of how the loss of a loved one can have lasting repercussions. Take as much bereavement time as is necessary and I would also advise you to seek out Counselor Solek or one of the other counselors on board. Before you have the opportunity to make your next request, allow me to preempt it. I cannot authorize you to leave the ship. Not only are we too far out for you to make the passage back to the Alpha Quadrant in a reasonable amount of time, the tone of your voice and the story you've just told me lends me to believe you would be undertaking a mission of vengeance... a vendetta. As Starfleet Officers, we are not permitted the luxury of having vendettas. Do you understand, Uvek?"

Uvek actually smiled. "I do, captain. However, I am emotionally compromised at the moment, if I understand the concept. I needed you to make that decision for me, which I knew you would do."

He put his head in his hands. "Truthfully, I have been unable to think clearly for the past few days. My parents and I spoke as regularly as my duties allowed over the past 20 years, and as a Romulan, family ties are extremely important. It was a link to normality, if you understand what I am saying. Vulcans and Romulans share a common fate, that of familial heritage."

He looked back at the captain. "You are quite right. I have little other thoughts than to return secretly to Romulus and kill Drayal and as many members of his section as possible. On the other hand, I recognize that this was the inevitable outcome of my betrayal to the empire, and the very reason I defected in the first place." He shook his black-haired head. "Whatever influence the Dominion had in the empire, the Tal Shiar was long before overstepping their mandate. I discovered within myself a hatred for what they had become."

"With your permission, and barring unforseen emergencies, I would like to confine myself for a few days and come to grips with this development. Perhaps the ship's counselor is a good choice."
