After Lieutenant Croft stepped away from Qech, several other crewmen paid their respect to her. Lieutenants Ghan and Solana, Doctor T'Lau, Counselor Solek, even Ambassador Rolen commented on her actions. As the well wishers stepped back and conversation began to dim, Captain Brennon stepped forward and called the group to order.
"My friends, thank you for coming and celebrating the achievements of our First Officer and welcoming a new member aboard our crew." he turned to the ship's new Edenite physician, "Doctor Ortega, welcome aboard the Hartington, I hope your travels with us are fruitful and you find what you're looking for." Turning his head to Qech, he smiled and raised his glass to her. "Davynn, my friend. You've saved the lives of your fellow crewmen and what's more you've helped an entire race of people discover a new less invasive way of curing a disease. As a Doctor you should be proud and as a Starfleet Officer you should feel prouder."
He stepped back, looking now to each member of his crew that was assembled at the moment. His features were serious as he spoke again, heavy with the words he spoke.
"As you all know, I've been speaking with Starfleet Command quite a deal recently. A lot of what we've discussed has been regarding our next mission and the Space Station discovered by the Guardian... but not everything has had to do with that business. I've filed my most recent mission report and received a reply. Lieutenant Commander Davynn Qech, step forward."
As she did, with the help of Doctor Kiv, Brennon continued speaking.
"On the authority of Admiral Leonard James Akaar, I present you with the Bronze Star for bravery and meritorious service. You are also promoted to the rank of Commander, with all the rights and privileges there in. Congratulations, Commander Qech."
A smiling Brennon extended one hand to the new Commander while at the same time, Yeomen M'Rowl handed the Captain a small case who in turn handed it to Qech. Inside was the Bronze Star medal as well as a full pip for Qech's collar. As she looked upon them, the entire room erupted in applause, cheering for their own. _________________

"Well done! Well done!" called Uvek. With a quick handshake and a hearty "Congratulations, Commander." He moved to the door and headed below decks for the meeting with his security people, as assembled by Karl Koester. _________________

Croft clapped loudly, a huge smile on his face. Couldn't happen to a more deserving officer _________________

If Qech was blushing before, it was nothing compared to the color her face was now. She had not expected this. Although, when she thought about it, the chocolate cake should have given it away. Captain Brennon always had a thing for irony... and chocolate.
She gave an embarrassed smile as the Captain shook her hand, and it seemed all she could manage was a "thank you, Sir" as she took the box that was handed to her. She barely realized that Uvek had taken her hand to shake it in all the commotion. She smiled and nodded to him as he congratulated her, but for the most part the whole thing had her a bit overwhelmed.
Finally, with a shake of her head, she looked up at Brennon. A smile crept across her face, which was still red from the sudden wash of attention. "Permission to hate your guts, Sir?"

OOC: I totally missed the fact that Calodan spoke to the Captain about the conflict between the parasites and the edenites. thank you to alaina for mentioning it to me.
Before his speach
The Captain took Lieutenant Calodan aside and spoke in a hushed voice, clearly unhappy about what he was telling his Second Officer.
"Lieutenant, if it was up to me we would be doing just that, but Starfleet has other designs for the Hartington right now. Even if we didn't have to be on our way, I'm not sure exactly how much more we'd be able to do to show the Edenites that what they're doing is wrong... In my encounters with them, on whole their society seems to think it knows what is right, consequences be damned. We can hope that they use the knowledge we've given them, but more than that... I'm sorry, Jim, I know that you feel connected to them, but there is nothing I can do right now." _________________

having spent the last several weeks closed off from her crew, in part due to dealing with the loss of her mother and partly to prepare for her transfer she stood with her back to the wall smiling as her crew mates celebrated. _________________

"Permission to hate your guts, Sir?"
Brennon chuckled as M'Rowl handed him a piece of cake, the Caitian handing the newly minted Commander a slice herself.
"Permission granted, Commander. But only if you eat your cake."
M'Rowl shook her head and spoke up with a very serious tone to her voice.
"Sir, I don't think that the Commander would dare defy that order." _________________

"Sir, I don't think that the Commander would dare defy that order."
Qech chuckled as she dug into her cake. She had definitely lost weight over the last couple of days, despite all her efforts to keep it on.
"Unless the good Captain has poisoned my cake, I can't help but view this as a win-win situation. Maybe he wants to spend more time with his acting First Officer... Who I hear is hanging crew members by their ankles, by the way. You may want to look into that."
She spared a quick wink at Calodan, having spoken deliberately loud enough for him to hear her. "Very unprofessional." _________________

"Very unprofessional."
Calodan laughed at Commander Qech and toasted her with his glass. "Only following the example of the non-acting First Officer Ma'am." _________________

"Only following the example of the non-acting First Officer Ma'am."
Qech shook her fork at him while swallowing a mouthful of cake. when the chocolaty obstruction was finally down, she grinned and said:
"That was your first mistake." _________________
