Location: Conference Room, USS Hartington
When: Immediately after CO Briefing aboard DS27
Captain Brennon stepped into the conference room a few minutes after having spoken to Qech. As such, several of his Officers had yet to arrive. The First Officer, however, was present, along with Doctor Ortega and Ambassador Rolen.
"Captain, I hope you don't mind my joining the meeting. I heard the call for Doctor Kiv and I felt I could contribute. My people have explored much of the region near to where the Hartington had been surveying."
"And I simply felt that my presence has been a little under appreciated of late, Captain. I trust you feel the same. I have dearly missed the opportunity to be of service to you and this fine vessel."
Brennon gave Qech a sidelong glance as he slid into his chair at the head of the table.
"By all means gentlemen, I value the opinion of each member of my crew. Take a seat." _________________

Conference Room
Drake quickly ran into the conference room, "Sorry bout taking so long, Sir. Had a little issue to resolve in sciences." Drake then looked around the room and saw just the captain, commander and the two doctors sitting there. None of the other crew had arrived yet.
The science chief took a seat across from the doctors and smiled gently at the two of them. Drake then pulled out a PADD and set it on the table. On it were the readings sciences gathered while they were in the wormhole. _________________

"Sorry bout taking so long, Sir. Had a little issue to resolve in sciences."
Qech smiled as Drake looked about the room, clearly realizing he wasn't really late after all. The way he was breathing suggested that he had run all the way from sciences. She had to hand it to the Lieutenant; he was diligent. And she couldn't recall ever finding him unprepared for a meeting, or any situation for that matter. Such work ethics amongst the crew made it easier for the Commander to do her job, and she appreciated it.
"Well, you're holding everyone up, Lieutenant" she said, gesturing to the nearly empty conference room. "Get here faster next time." She winked, smiling, and sat back in her chair, sipping at a cup of freshly brewed decaf. _________________

Croft hurried in, a scowl on his face. He sat at the conference room table, his fingers tapping a beat on the table. _________________

Qech felt like the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees when Croft marched in. He was obviously ruffled. She raised an eyebrow in an almost vulcan-like manner as she watched him tap out his obvious frustration on the table and made a mental note to speak to him after the meeting. Now wasn't the time for personal conversations. _________________

Calodan entered the room and took his seat at the table. He was glad to see he wasn't the last to arrive. He had decided to take a shift on the Bridge instead of sitting through a ceremony on DS-27. That sort of event wasn't something he enjoyed.
Seeing the Commander's cup of coffee, he excused himself to a replicator and got one for himself. It had been a long couple of days, full of high warp transit putting strain on the ship and tempers flaring because of the extra work. Calodan and Ghan had been at each other's throats over Operations issues. The Captain's mood hadn't improved any and Calodan hoped that this briefing would reveal some of what has been bothering him.
The one bright spot had been Commander Qech's recovery and promotion. It was good to be back behind the Ops station instead of in her chair. _________________

Uvek walked into the room, a PADD in his hand. With a nod of respect to Commander Qech and Lt. Calodan, he said "My apologies, captain, I was downloading the data from Guardian's study of the Tal'harton Staff weapons and hand-held units. Quite illuminating, and very sophisticated. I will have a complete analysis of the data later."
He took his customary place, folding his 6'5" frame into the seat. _________________

Captain Brennon nodded as all of his senior staff took their seats. Looking to his Tactical Officer the Captain nodded.
"I'd like to see a report on that data ASAP, Lieutenant."
Turning back to the room at large, Brennon tapped out a command on his PADD and began the briefing. His demeanor was clearly aggravated, but he seemed to be more approachable than he had been the past few days.
"We've been given our orders: resume our mission of exploration. To that end we're returning to through the Julant Wormhole and make our way back along our previous course. Lieutenants Calodan and Drake, work with stellar sciences to decide on our next stop. For my part, I'd suggest one of the archeological digs hosted by the Myosians, but that's just me. Lieutenants Ghan and Croft, let's try to make the trip through the wormhole smoother this time around, work the problem. Commander Qech, work with all department heads, I'd like a readiness report before we enter the wormhole. Dismissed."
The crew began to rise and file out, their minds going over the briefly curt encounter with their Captain. As they did, Brennon called out to some of his officers.
"Commander Qech, Lieutenant Calodan, a moment of your time please." _________________

Calodan kept his seat as the rest of the crew filed out. Orders to continue exploring where exactly what he had hoped for. He was glad that Admiral Croft wasn't spending too much time micro-managing the Hartington. _________________

Qech was about to stand up, but lowered herself back into the seat when the Captain asked them to stay. She hoped it wasn't more bad news. As it was, she had to force herself to concentrate, because it seemed the baby had developed a bad case of the hiccups. Common, but distracting. She had an oddly amused smile on her face that she was trying very hard to wipe off as she turned her attention to the Captain. _________________

Drake nodded, grabbed his PADD and exited the briefing room. The science chief walked shortly down the corridor and then turned to one of the wall. He pressed a key on the wall console and then glanced down at his console.
Drake agreed with the captain, visiting one of the Myosians archeological digs would be a great chance for him to study a planet in the quadrant and learn more about the species, something the crew hadn't done in a while.
Drake winced in pain slightly as his holoarm began to bother him. Time to turn you off for a little while. He pressed the tiny metal octagon on his shoulder and his arm vanished. Drake nodded as the pain began to go away.
The science officer entered a nearby turbolift and rested up against the wall. "Bridge." _________________

"Admiral Croft is mining the Station for its weapons technology." the Captain began bluntly. "Starfleet, with the Admiral at the forefront of the push, is trying to position itself as a power player in this region of space. Commander Talbert is of the opinion that the diplomatic option with the Tal'Harton has already failed and I'm worried that the Admiral may be putting too much pressure on him."
He slid a pair of PADDS across the table to each officer. They contained what little data he could offer them from his meetings the past few days with Command.
"I'm getting a little nervous... We've been out here for only a few months. I'd heard talk of building a Starbase out here when we had the resources to spare, but this 'stroke of luck' they're calling it seems a little too convenient to me."
He looked to his trusted first and second officers -- his friends -- and waited for their opinion on the situation. _________________

Croft had found it difficult to work with Ghan before, but with his patience stretched thin by his father he found it near impossible. The Tellarite was in an argumentative mood, and Croft had finally snapped.
"What do you mean I should fly better? We are supposed to be improving the flight capabilities through a wormhole, not parallel parking!" Croft punched the console, literally, pain flaring through his hand.
"Dammit!" Croft turned away from the console, cradling his now injured hand. So much for controlling my temper on my new assignment He could sense the Tellarite's satisfaction from the argument. _________________

Qech regarded the Captain for a few minutes before speaking, taking in everything he had said one piece at a time. "I have to admit, Sir, I thought the building of a station out here so soon was a little odd, given Starfleet's very careful track record." She bit her lip in thought for a moment, then continued. "A space station sends a very solid message to surrounding space: 'we're here to stay.' I was under the impression that we were trying to gain these people's trust, now they're going to think we were lying about everything. This whole program in counter-productive. Keeping that in mind, I have every reason to believe you're right about the Admiral. This isn't Star Fleet's way."
Qech sighed, highly disappointed by the news. She held the Federation's code of conduct in high regard, and it always stung when someone in power tried to throw it all away. It's always the admirals, she thought to herself.
When she spoke again, her voice was very stern and serious, almost uncharacteristically so. It carried with it a hint of anger and a desire for action.
"The question is, Sir... What will we do about it?" _________________

"I have to agree with Commander Qech. If we had a diplomatic option with the Tal'Harton, we don't anymore." He quickly scanned over the padd and a single item jumped out at him. "A shipyard? That destroys any shred of this being a mission of exploration."
"The question is, Sir... What will we do about it?"
Qech's tone and question really made him think. What could they do about it? Nothing really.
"Sir, I'm willing to lodge a formal protest with Starfleet Command about some of this. If nothing else maybe someone complaining will jar them into at least thinking about their actions." _________________
