Xavier Croft walked down the corridor, heading for the staff meeting, when he saw his father striding towards him. Xavier stopped, letting his father come to him.
"Lieutenant, may I have a moment?" Admiral Croft said, motioning down a side corridor. So it's going to be like that, eh? Xavier thought
"Yes sir." Xavier followed the Admiral almost to the end, stopping when he did.
"What can I do for you, Admiral." He tried to keep the sarcasm from his voice, but as usual he failed. His father looked at him for a moment, Xavier could almost hear the gears whirring behind the blue eyes he had inherited.
"I read Captain Brennon's report on the derelict freighter the Hartington found. I understand you almost died because of that mission." He left it as a statement, not a question, and Xavier couldn't help but laugh derisively.
"Several officers, including myself, were infected on that mission, but I'm sure that was all in the report."
Xavier could see his father beginning to lose patience, but he was late for a meeting, and wasn't in the mood for the Admiral's false concern.

Admiral Croft watched and listened as his son pushed the line of respect that should be given to a superior officer, trying to maintain his composure. The little brat always felt like he was ill used, and never appreciated what his father had done for him to prepare him for the future. He chose his words carefully, forcing himself to use a calm even tone.
"Xavier, I am trying to tell you that I am grateful that you are still here. I care for you, whether you believe it or not, and I just want to make sure you are alright." A flash of several emotions flickered across his son's face, too fast to read. His son took a deep breath before he spoke.
"I want to tell you that I have put Ally's death behind me," Xavier said, "And I will strive to be more cordial in the future." Croft found his carefully practiced speech suddenly out dated, as his only son surprised him once again. He thought quickly, trying to decide how to capitalize on this development.
"Xavier, I am more pleased than you can ever know to hear that." Croft decided to push his case, suddenly eager to do so.
"The USS Pavonis will soon need a new Second Officer, I could..." His son exploded right before his eyes.
"I DON'T WANT YOUR HELP! I will decide what promotions I will accept, and they will be ones I have earned! I have enough trouble being the son of the great Admiral Croft, I don't need to add to it by making what they say true!" His face was flushed, and had slowly leaned into the Admiral's face. He suddenly backed off, his voice dropping to almost a whisper,
"I don't want to be given special favors, if I ever get a command I want to earn it. I'm late for a staff meeting." Without another word he turned and strode off without looking back, leaving the Admiral seething with rage. _________________
