OOC When you wrote your first action post with the distress call, you didn't say it was cut short. As players we can only act on what info we're given, you need to be sure you're clear about such very important distinctions.

Lt. Drake
USS Hartington
Conference room

Drake spoke up after Uvek. "With all due respect, Sir, we must also be careful when we do made contact. They don't appear to have any warp capabilities and who knows, besides the communication aspect, what technologies they have."

Drake leaned in closer to the table. "The last thing we want to do is give them a peak at all of our technology. I recommend making contact too, but with only a limited crew first of all and very little technology if we head down to the surface."

Qech looked thoughtful. "That may be difficult to do. Whether we touch down by transport or shuttle, we'll be showing our technology either way. But if it is in fact just a question of inferior technology, we should be able to boost the signal when we get closer to the planet and make contact that way, before attempting an away mission. Personally I don't like the idea of flying in there completely blind until we have at least spoken to these people. We don't even know what it is they need."

Uvek leaned back and unexpectedly smiled. He looked to the captain.

"Sir, I seem to have suffered from what you term de'javu. We had a similiar conversation related to some Cardassians not long ago. I think regardless of the technologic situation, which seems passive at the moment, these beings have contacted us for help. If they are experiencing magnetic disturbances, the results could be catastrophic. If not, and this is an elaborate ruse to lure us here, here we are and it is in our best interests to discover their motives."

He glanced around the room. "To use the phrase our captain did then, we are Starfleet officers and citizens of the Federation, present company excluded, Ambassador, and we must not deny them humanitarian aid. I agree with Commander Qech, we must at least make contact."

((OOC: Sorry I haven't spoken before. I didn't know where to look for this thread! I was searching through all the wrong forums. My bad.))

Lieutenant Aria Lioy cleared her throat. "Perhaps if I might make a suggestion. We could go down in a shuttle craft a little way away from the populated areas and then hike to them. That way we could offer aid without making our superior technology too visible. Or, if you think their satellites would pick the ship up, we could beam down, again a ways away with the same result. I agree that if these people are in trouble we should do what we can to aid them."

"With the fluctuations in the magnetosphere I wouldn't suggest transporters. Mr. Uvek is right to remind us of our first mission, even if the situations are very different. We could probably beam an away team down, but I do not believe we could retrieve them. A shuttlecraft would also have some serious difficulties in landing in this amount of magnetic flux. Their sensors would be virtually blind. The pilot would have to land on visual instruments only."

"Still, something has to be done. Is there a third option?"

"With the Guardian and the Archer on station with us, we might be able to coordinate and piggyback transporter signals. It is dangerous and has a high margin of error, but it could work."

He paused for a second, not happy with that option either. "We could also place all 3 ships in very specific low orbits. Using all 3 sets of sensors, we could relay information to a shuttlecraft trying to land."

((OOC: Wow. Kudos for coming up with both a third and a fourth option on the fly. I didn't think there would be one.))

Croft spoke up for the first time,
"It might be better to use runabouts and shuttlecraft for the low orbit maneuvers, then we only risk a few lives instead of the entire crew of all three ships."

Qech sat back in her chair, listening to the suggestions as they came. There were so many options on the table, options that needed to be narrowed down. But, without more information, what exactly were they planning for?

"I have a suggestion" she said, waiting for the bustle to die down a little.

"The fact of the matter is, we're making plans based on what we assume the problem to be. Now, there's a very good chance that these magnetic fluxes are indeed why they are calling for aid, but until we've spoken to them we can't fully prepare ourselves for an away mission. I propose then, until such time that we're able to learn more, we plan for more than one scenario. If their problem is indeed scientific in nature we're going to need to bring much different equipment, and prioritize differently than we would if they need tactical aid, or even mechanical aid."

She paused for a moment to see that everyone was following and continued.

"I think we should have every division ready for a disaster according to their expertise. Equipment checklists, backup plans, possible evac scenarios, anything you can think of that might go wrong. Science, tactical, Operations, Diplomatic... Yes, it's most likely the issue we discovered in our scans, so let's put some emphasis on the Science department, but we don't know that for sure yet. We can't waste the little amount of time we have planning for a situation that might not even be correct, and then starting all over when we get there. By the time we get close enough to make decent contact without interference we'll be too close to start at the drawing board."

The Commander looked around the room, her hands folded on the table in front of her. "No matter what we decide on I think it's clear that we're going to have to make a pot of coffee."

Calodan drained the rest of his mug and set it down on the table. "The Commander is right. Ops and Conn can work out a way to get a team or materials to the planet if needed. The rest is just up to what the situation calls for."

Calodan paused and realized he had just committed himself to finding a solution to a problem he didn't think had a good solution. Oh well, time to pull another rabbit out of his hat. He slid out of his chair and to the replicator. After a few button presses he returned to the table with two urns of fresh coffee and service for everyone present. "Now the coffee situation is taken care of..one less problem to face."

The Captain took a cup of coffee as Lieutenant Calodan sat back down. With the room quieted after having had so many of the people speak, the Captain spoke up and responded to the assembly's concerns and ideas.

"First off, and let me be perfectly clear. No one is suggesting we abandon these people. You're all right about our duty, even if our information is spotty at best. We're going in to our jobs to the best of our ability.

"That said, we don't want to go in blind. Mr. Drake, I'd like you to enhance the resolution on our sensor net as best as you can, get me a better look at what's on the ground and in system. I want to know everything. Commander, work with Lieutenants Calodan and Croft on plans for a landing party should one be needed. Lieutenant Lioy, you have a few hours to become an expert on the Friekians, I want you ready to accompany the landing party should it become necessary. Lieutenant Uvek, I'd like you to continue drilling the crew, prepare for the worst even if we're hoping for the best. Questions?"
