Lt. Taarak
USS Guardian
Bridge
Taarak cocked his head towards the captain as the blurred view of the planet was enlarged on the viewscreen. "Looks sort of evilish, Captain, doesn't she?" Taarak checked his console and made minor adjustments to the course. "Wouldn't want to visit there on my shore leave. I think I'll stick to Risa."
The Orion half smiled as he continued to work and turned back to the viewscreen. He could just feel the captain's eyebrow raising towards him. Yep, I bet the captain wishes he were on Risa right now, Taarak joked to himself.
"When we reach the planet, should I put us into a syncronized orbit, Captain?" Taarak asked. _________________

Marek glanced at Taarak, his face a mask, "Make it so, Lieutenant." _________________

Daniels looks over to Marek. "Hartington acknowledges our presence and requests we standby. I'm picking up variable signals from the satellite grid over the planet." He leans in and configures his board, boosting the gain.
"It appears they are in the throes of extreme magnetic flux. I can't isolate all of the signals, but the airwaves are alive with talk." He shakes his head...""I'm sorry, commander, but I can't make heads or tails of it. There appears to be a planet-wide emergency, and things are falling apart fast." _________________

Marek nods to Daniels, "Keep trying, Ensign."
Lenara turns to Marek, "Captain, the Archer just dropped out of warp, they are headed towards the planet at one half impulse."
Marek glances at his XO, "It appears that the young Commander doesn't want to wait. Mr. Taarak, follow them in, we do not want to leave the Archer without backup." Marek turns to Daniels, "Notify the Hartington of our intent." _________________

Lt. Taarak
USS Guardian
Bridge
Taarak went to work on the console and looked up slightly as the Guardian began to trail in behind the Archer. "Moving in behind the Archer, Sir. She's a sweet little ship!" Taarak had to work the console quick to keep up with the movements of the more advanced vessel they were following.
The Orion awed at the Archer flying in front of him. What he wouldn't give to fly that for one time, test her out. In his time at the shipyard back in Federation space he test flew new vessels coming into the fleet, but none were as sophisticated and sleek looking as the Archer.
"Maintaining a safe distance, though Sir, incase they have to make evasive maneuvers." Taarak spoke to the captain. He then leaned in slightly to Daniels sitting next to him and whispered. "Give the Hartington crew my best, I'll blow them a kiss when we pass them." _________________

Lt. Cmdr. Jonathan Adams
USS Guardian
Bridge
Still sitting next to the captain on the bridge, Adams couldn't make out what their flight control had whispered to ops/comms, but knew it couldn't have been good if they were whispering. Looks like our Orion can't keep focused too long, may have to talk to him about that...
Adams turned his head to the captain. "Sir, may I suggest raising shields? We don't know what we're heading into and more specifically, we don't know if there is anything in the planet's surrounding that is causing this. Better safe than sorry. The Archer may be fine with her technology, but we're in a ship a wee-bit older than she is."
Adams continued to look at the captain, whom he handn't had a chance to talk to you one-on-one since the station briefly when the first met, but had ready Marek's profile inside-and-out to get a better grasp of what his commanding officer was like. _________________

"Captain, we are recieving telemetry from Hartington, sir." called out the communications man.
"I am forwarding the appropriate data to Ensign Lenara. I also have isolated an emergency transmission being cycled on a 12 second delay. The most I can determine from it is that they have experienced a planet-wide emergency and are requesting immediate assistance. Something has been stolen, something which affects the entire planet. They are requesting we make contact. So far no word from Hartington on that front. Unfortunately, magnetic fluctuations are folding the signals into themselves. Satellites are also beginning to fail in their orbits." _________________

Marek looked at Daniels, "Ensign, I require an open channel, do what ever is necessary to make that happen." Marek approached the viewscreen, a concerned look on his face.
Lt. Harper spoke, "Captain, the electromagnetic interference is playing hell with our sensors, but it appears that the satellite network is missing a key element. Several of the satellites appear to be support systems for a larger orbiting body, but the larger body is not where it supposed to be." She tapped a few commands, "I'm also detecting what could possibly be multiple warp signatures, but it's either a very large group in synchronous warp or one massive vessel. I'm having a hard time believing the readings."
Marek turned to Lenara, "Try to confirm the heading and make up of the warp signatures." Marek turned back to Daniels, "Open channel Mr. Daniels, this is a wasted effort without communications." _________________

Marek paused for a moment, then tapped his combadge, "Mr. Dorin, please report to the bridge." Within minutes the diminutive Myosian exited the turbolift, his limp almost completely gone.
"Yes Captain, you called for me?"
Marek motioned towards the viewscreen, "Do you know anything about the planet Freika? It would be of great assistance if you could tell me anything about the planet."
Dorin rubbed his chin, taking several steps towards the viewscreen.
"Freika...Yes I am familiar with the world." He paused for a moment, gathering his thoughts, "If memory serves me correctly, we have attempted to initiate trade with this world several times. The Freika are an interesting people, they are extremely ethnocentric. While they aren't prejudiced, they have little interest in other species. They had a destructive shift in the planets crust some years ago, and only by a scientific breakthrough did they save their species. Since that time, they have very strict limits on anything that could have global effects, including reproduction. They at first seemed interested in the trade goods we offered, but as some of the materials were not reusable they severed trade negotiations." He paused for a moment, turning back towards Marek, "My people have suspected that the people of Freika have the technical knowledge for at least inter-system travel, but are not willing to dedicate the resources to develop that ability."
Marek nod, then turns to Daniels, "Pass that information on to the Hartington and the Archer. Lt. Harper, Ensign Lenara, use this information in your analysis." Marek turned back to the command chair, sitting, "It may be that the planet is having another crisis." _________________

***ACTION POINT****
The ship lurched violently. Magnetic currents were now lashing out from various points on the planet and causing waves of magnetic energy to flash solar-flare style from the magnetosphere. Several satellites at once rolled away from or into the atmosphere, depending on the eddies. With that change, the malfunctioning communications satellite spun on its axis and the full power of the signal cut through all communications. On the bridge the following message burst through:
"This is the planet Frieka. We are declaring a planet-wide emergency. We have suffered magnetic destabilization. We are requiring immediate assistance. Please, respond to this message and be connected to our First Citizen or his representative to offer assistance."
It repeats every 12 seconds. _________________

TRANSMISSION FROM THE HARTINGTON TO ALL SHIPS:
The viewscreen flashed and a tall, gaunt figure filled it.
He was bright orange, thin and had wisps of white hair now straggling his forehead and around his small ears. He looked tired and angry.
"Thank the Planet!" He called out. "I am Doctor Dorvun, Chief Scientist and First Citizen of Frieka. I thought no one would come!"
"Whoever you are, we are in desperate straits! The planet is tearing itself apart. I calculate that in twelve days a major polar shift will cause atmospheric disturbances and ground tremors that will leave millions dead or dying! Please, you must help us return the Dynamo! They stole it! Without that device in orbit, our plates will fail altogether and the planet will be lifeless!" _________________

Captain Brennon's Reply, broadcast on an open frequency.
"Doctor Dorvun, I am Captain David Brennon of the United Federation of Planets. We would be more than happy to assist you, but we're going to need a little more information. What happened here, Doctor? Is the Dynamo the missing Space Station and if so how was it taken from orbit?" _________________

Dorvun nodded as members of his team moved through the viewing area. There was evidence of the physical shaking they had suffered through everywhere and equipment beeped and whirred behind him.
"Thank you Captain Brennon!" he replied. "The station you mentioned is indeed the Dorvun Magnetostatic Dynamo. It is actually a giant magnetic field generator placed in geo-synchronys orbit more than 100 years ago by my father, Pallus Dorvun and his team. I have little time to spare, but essentially, a vast magnetic pole shift was predicted some 1000 years ago. Over the course of 500 years the sciences of our planet worked to reverse the worst of our involvement with pollutants, as we were convinced that Frieka herself was punishing us for our wayward ways. To summarize, we forsook space travel for environmental studies and developed a series of magnetic plates, placed in geographic lines along the planet's magnetic axis. These plates are used to enhance the Dynamo's effects and align the planet's magnetic field.
"The Dynamo is maintained by a team of scientists, which we are prepared to replace every 200 years, or as necessary. Four days ago a fleet entered our system and approached the station. They called themselves the Fleet of the Mandrake, though we never truly saw them, and they claimed to have been studying us for some time.
They had a massive starship unlike any I have seen and several support vessels. They literally linked the Dynamo to the Mandrake and took it away! The effects were instantaneous and unless we return it to the proper orbit, the plates under our crust will shift further and irreparable harm will destroy the planet." _________________

Lt. Taarak
USS Guardian
Bridge
As Captain Brennon and the Hartington communicated with Doctor Dorvun, Taarak's finger swept across the flight control console in front of him, moving the Guardian into a higher orbit to stay clear of any further turbulence. Taarak was careful to stick withthe Archer and Hartington, however. _________________
