Aria hit the button outside the first officer's quarters which would signal that someone was outside the door. She wondered what this Commander Quech would be like. The captain had seemed decent enough. Hopefully his ex-o would also be approachable.

Qech was sitting at her desk, finishing up an entry log when she heard the sound of the door chime.

"Come in."

Aria entered.

"Hello. Commander Qech? I'm Lietenant Lioy. Aria. The Captain sent me to you to explain my duty roster." She noticed that the woman was writing something. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything."

Qech smiled and set the PADD aside. "It's less important than the duty roster. Come in, have a seat" she said, motioning to the chair in front of her desk. As Aria made herself comfortable, Qech stood, grabbed another data PADD from a file on the right side of her desk, and sat back down again. Her movements were a little slower than usual, thanks mainly to her now 5 month progressed pregnancy and the fact that she wasn't one hundred percent recuperated from her stint in sickbay.

"Your timing is actually perfect. I was just about to reevaluate the duty roster." The commander looked up from the PADD in her hand and back toward the young Lieutenant now sitting across from her. She looked vibrant and ready to go, something Qech had missed in the Hartington crew in recent months. The voyage was wearing down on them.

"So, Lieutenant Lioy, was it?" Qech made a mental note of the obviously Betazoid surname. "You're our new diplomatic officer I take it." She gestured to the purple collar on Aria's uniform.

"Yes, sir." Aria noticed the commander was moving a little stiffly and felt concerned. Now didn't seem the proper time to ask, however. The woman's emotions brushed her thoughts and Aria relaxed. Comander Qech didn't seem badly off. If anything she seemed content, and perhaps a little thoughtful. Obviously, whatever the problem was, it wasn't too urgent.

Aria carefully lidded her empathic senses, the way she automatically did her telepathy. There was a time and a place for everything, and people could become affronted if they thought their thoughts were being spied on. Aria tried to respect that.

"I am the new diplomatic officer'" she went on. "I'd appreciate it if you'd explain to me what I'll be expected to do in that post. In my previous assignment I was focused mostly on counseling duties." She cocked her head and grinned. "Frankly, I'm looking forward to the challenge of something new."

"Frankly, I'm looking forward to the challenge of something new."

"Well, that's very good to hear Lieutenant, because I have a feeling you're going to have your work cut out for you here. Your Diplomatic duties will typically come into play during negotiations with other species. Now, there may be times when you may have to speak directly to them, but that's not usually the case. Typically other cultures find it rude when they don't get to speak to the one in charge directly, but that does not make your role any less valuable."

She leaned back slightly in her chair, obviously trying to get a bit more comfortable, and continued. "To put it frankly, you've been trained in the great art of 'how not to tick people off'. As Diplomatic officer you'll be looking for key things. Inflictions in the voice, facial expressions... And in your case, straight out emotions, if I got the surname right." Qech flashed a quick smile before moving on. "Your council will be invaluable to the speaker when in touchy situations. There have been times when the simple presence of a diplomatic officer during negotiations averted what could have been a grave misunderstanding."

Qech's eyes seemed far away for a brief second, as if the thought had triggered a memory, but it didn't last long. With another warm smile she focused back on the new Diplomatic officer. "And I think that might have been an over-simplification, just to give you scope. Suffice it to say... You'll be needed."

Aria smiled. "Well, hopefully I won't tick people off. I wouldn't be very good at either of my jobs if I did." She mulled over the commander's words. "So it's part mouthpiece, part mediator, and part spy, eh? Sounds...exciting. But you said I had my work cut out for me here. Why? Have you had some bad experiences in the past?"

Qech sighed; not an annoyed or frustrated sigh, more like a thoughtful one. "Well, the Gamma Quadrant is a 'new frontier' of sorts. Ever since we've arrived we have been encountering one species after another. Some are openly friendly, some..." her mind drifted to the Tal'Harton and the abuse she had suffered by their hands "...Less so. So you can see why a Diplomatic Officer is a key player in a voyage like this. Now, as far as counseling goes, I can tell you personally that morale on this ship has been obviously low the last few weeks. We've had a few hostile encounters, and generally people are starting to feel home sick. Lieutenant Solek, our chief counselor, has had his hands full. I think he'll be glad for the relief to be honest."

"I see."

She cocked her head again, listening, as Quech went on.

"Well, morale I can try to help with," she said when the commander finished. "But I don't know anyone right now, and that will make things difficult. I'll tell you what I did on my last assignment. When I first came aboard I threw myself a 'Welcome Aboard!' party and invited the entire crew. That way I could mingle and meet people. It seemed to break the ice."

"And who knows," she added. "Maybe a party will be a start towards perking people up."

((OOC: BTW, I love your new avatar. The photo manip looks just like the picture you had up before. How did you do that?))

Qech grinned. "I think a party would be a wonderful idea. And if you want a tip: serve chocolate cake. The Captain won't be able to turn down your invitation if there's chocolate involved." With that, she stood and reached her hand out to the new officer. "It was very nice meeting you Lieutenant. And don't worry about finding your niche, as you seem to have the right idea."

((OOC: Thank you. The image in my new avatar is the photo that I originally wanted to use for Qech, unfortunately she was missing the entire top half and side of her head (from the bangs up) so I couldn't use it for my avatar. The photo was also terribly small and it had a greenish yellow tint to it. She seemed perfect for Qech though, so I just used it as a reference, said 'screw it' and drew her instead. But, it seems, after doing all these avatars for the site, I've gotten a bit better at photo manipulation. So, I decided to give it another stab. It took some serious surgery (I had to manually paint the top of her head back on) but, I'm surprised to say, I was able to do it! Greatest challenge yet. I really surprised myself.))

Aria grinned in reply as she shook Qech's hand. "Thank you, sir. And I'd appreciate it if you'd put the word out. Say for tomorrow afternoon? I know I hope to see you there," she added. "If your back's not hurting too much, that is." The unspoken question hung in the air.

Qech shook her head. "This is really nothing compared to how it'll be in a few months. Nothing I can't ignore." She smiled. "And I will be sure to show up, and I'll spread the word to the senior staff. You can never have too many parties. I've been meaning to speak to Lieutenant Calodan about maybe restarting his poker games again anyway. It's been hectic around here so it's sort of fallen by the wayside."

The Commander looked back over to her desk and then to Lieutenant Lioy. "Well, I'd better get back to the crew roster. The Captain will be getting back on board soon, and I'd like to have it done by the time we get underway. I'll see you at the party Lieutenant. And good luck settling in."
