Lenara nods, "I'll get right on it." She grabs her PADD and heads for the science lab.

USS Guardian - Science
Lt. Mehvra-Kuplo

The team concentrates on their work and after an hour or so. The data has been retrieved and analyzed. Mehv calls in Dr. Uroki for medical expertise and the team meets to report their findings and determine a course of action.

Lenara speaks first. "Lt Taarak and I have finished analyzing the data collected by the Guardian and the probe we sent. We have likely found the source of the strange effect this planet has had on the crew." Lenara looks to Taarak to continue.

Lt. Taarak
USS Guardian
Science

The Orion picked up his PADD, enjoying helping out with the engineering department and getting a slight break from his flight control duties. "The most likely cause of the problems we've all experienced is likely a very low frequency EM radiation that is being emitted. Where? We don't know, yet."

Taarak paused to look at the team. "Normally, this wouldn't have any effect on the ship or people, but the planet has a unique quality. The VLF signal is resonating in the planet's magnetosphere. It is basically amplifying, and distorting, the signal to levels unheard of except for very near hte event horizon of a black hole."

Taarak placed his PADD on the table and leaned back slightly waiting for comments or further discussion. He was beginnign to develop a slight headache. Must be from lack of sleep lately, Taarak thought to himself.

USS Guardian - Science Lab
Lt Mevhra-Kuplo

Mehv listens intently and takes a look at the spectrum analysis of the radiation. He shakes his head in awe, "I've never seen anything so strong at these frequencies. Our shields don't even bother blocking frequencies even 10 times higher than this. The energy in this part of the spectrum is so low, it doesn't harm the ship or its equipment."

"This is good news, though, we can easily shift the shield modulation to block these frequencies, though it would be a significant additional drain on our power levels while we block it."

Dr. Uroki speaks up for the first time after the mention of the frequencies involved. "The frequencies we're talking about here are approaching brain wave levels. There hasn't really been any research done on the effect of a source this strong in these frequency ranges. I can attempt to run some simulations, but I'm not sure how much help they would be. I will state, however, that it is most likely the cause for the unwanted effects being triggered. This holds with Venutian physiology as their brain waves operate at a much higher frequency than most humanoids."

Lt Mehvra-Kuplo speaks up again, "I had wanted to test out our theory in a controlled environment, but we do not have the capability of reproducing the radiation in a test environment to verify success. We will probably need to take the option Commander Adams suggested for sending Ensign Lenara and another person back to the planet for a test run. Anything else?"

Mehv pauses and looks to his team for additional comments. If and after they have been given, they head up and give their report to the Captain and Commander Adams.

Lenara nods to Kuplo, "I agree, although, since the shield design is yours, I would recommend you are on the mission as well. I can stop you if you decided to resume your musical warp core adjustments." Lenara smiles, hoping her attempt at humor didn't cross a line.

USS Guardian - Science Lab
Lt Mehvra-Kuplo

Growing up in an upsol doesn't leave much room for privacy, so Mehv is used to having embarrassing moments everyone knows about.

"I am happy to come along. Although, it could have been worse, I might have decided next to put on a light show with the phasers."

Daniels heard the jist of the conversation and plan, but threw in his thoughts as the teams began to work on shield modification. He approached Commander Adams.

"Sir, excuse me, but I need to ask something." He looked over the specs. "If this radiation is working on the lines of VLF, I think we can do away with shields, which won't really work anyway, not against what are essentially sound waves. However," he moved his PADD around for Adams to look at. "If we modulate the VLF receiver on the ship, and tie it into the lateral sensor array, we can in essence create a giant harmonizer. Taking the signals in all over the ship, and transmitting them out again, say to a specified point in space. THis way, we become a kind of antenna, with the whole ship slipstreaming into the VLF wave, and skimming it off the lateral array. It should cut the effects of the radiation by more than enough to handle the rest with simple hypo treatments from sickbay."

He looked at the Commander expectedly. "Whadda ya think?" He asked.

ACTION

Several hours later, Lenara and Kuplo are putting the finishing touches on the runabouts shield modifications. The Guardian has now stopped, holding position half a light year outside of the Letara system. As they work, Captain Marek enters the shuttlebay.

Marek approaches the runabout, looking every bit a stern Vulcan, "Ensign, Lt., how are the modifications coming?"

Lt. Cmdr. Jonathan Adams
USS Guardian
Bridge

Adams took the PADD from Daniels and looked it over as he listened to the comm officer explain his idea. "I like it, Daniels. However, the captain is set on doing it his way and we should carry out those orders first. If we need another plan, we will look at yours further. I would like you to get a jump start on some of the stuff you can do now, just incase we need to move to your plan."

The commander handed the PADD back to his communications officer and looked at him. "I will pass this along to the Captain when he returns from the shuttle bay where he is meeting with the team down there."

Adams sat in the center chair and rubbed his temple, a slight headache was coming on. It wasn't due to the suggestion by Daniels, but Adams hoped it wasn't another side-effect of the planet's effect on the crew. Headaches were common to the first officer on away missions with the change in gravity, but rarely did he have one on the ship.

The first officer looked up as Daniels went to work on preparing for his plan. "Thank you for your suggestion, Daniels."

Hearing the captain's voice down here, while not unheard of, came as a slight surprise to Mehv. As he spoke, he wondered what triggered the trip down here.

"Captain! We should be ready to head out in 10 minutes. We've made the modifications and ran a couple of tests. The shields do block the EM radiation at those frequencies, but we are not able to test with the power levels we'll see out there, so there remains some uncertainty. I am confident, however, in the fail-safe procedures we've put into place. In addition to having Ensign Lenara along. We've enabled the remote piloting function should there be no response from the ship after a period of time."

Lt. Taarak
Shuttlebay
USS Guardian

Taarak came out from within the shuttlecraft where Lt Mehvra-Kuplo was speaking with the captain. "Excuse me, Sirs. Lt. Mehvra-Kuplo, the final systems check is complete, I beleive we're ready."

Taarak then shifted his view to the captain. "I'll be ready to pilot this whenever you give the order, Sir." Taarak gestered toward the shuttle craft behind Mehvra-Kuplo and the Orion.

Marek nods to Taarak, then turns back to Mehvra, "Depart as soon as Lt. Vanquax arrives. I would prefer putting this planet behind us as soon as possible." Marek turns and leaves heading to the bridge.

Lenara watches Marek leave, then takes the ops station, bringing ships secondary systems online. She turns to Kuplo, "Well, that's an almost emotional response from the Captain."

Nearly out of breath as she found herself running towards the shuttlebay she manages to slow her speed just before entering the bay knowing full well just how late for the call she is.

"Sir, I apologize for my tardiness..." she starts still trying to catch her breath. "but my reasons behind it are my own..." she says praying that she doesn't get her head ripped off in the process.

Ensign Lenara wrote:

"I suspect the loss of control is rather unsettling for him. Vulcan's have many strengths, but their need for self-control is very strong and losing it, even for a while, is hard for them."

Lt JG VanQuax wrote:

Mehv gives her a judging look for a second, then says "Man your station, quickly. Lt. Taarak, please proceed."

ACTION

The runabout pulls from the shuttlebay of the Guardian, quickly but smoothly. Taarak seemed to like to push every vessel he piloted to the limit. Within minutes they were approaching the planet again, the runabout minutes from the edge of the radiation field.

Lenara checked her console, her face serious, "Power levels are normal, shields at maximum. Sensors detect nothing unusual."
