((OOC: Yes, I'm posting again! Hey, I have to get established on the ship, somehow, right?"

So here's what it is...This post is a chance for you all to talk about your chars and their back stories, if you want. Just post in this thread, and I'll respond to each of you as if we were talking alone and confidentially. That way I can get to know you (and maybe get caught up on some of the stories I missed) and you can get as personal as you want.))

Aria Lioy's Office
A Week before "Outsider"

Aria leaned back in her chair examining a copy of the message she'd sent out to every one of the ship's personnel. In it she asked each person to come and visit her in the near future. She felt that it was necessary to talk, at least briefly, with everyone on board so that they would be willing to speak with her in the future, and she had said as much in the message. They wouldn't have to bare their souls, necessarily, but it was important to touch base.
Besides, Lieutenant Calodan had implied that serious, stressful events had happened in the recent months. No doubt, the crew had spoken with their old counselor. Still, it couldn't hurt to see if anyone needed to talk.

She could not stress enough the importance of this. If she didn't know the people, she couldn't do her job.

She'd made a point of saying that if they did not come to her, she would come to them.

Aria sat back, deep in thought. She'd get the pulse of this crew in the next few days, as she saw who came and who didn't. All that was left was to wait.

Around an hour after Alpha shift had ended, Qech sat down in her quarters to check her messages. She noticed an invitation to speak with the counselor and, with a small sigh, resigned herself to the idea of stopping by. She knew she had to go, and couldn't put it off. As First Officer, she had to set an example for the crew, and snubbing the new counselor would not be a very good example at all.

With a shrug of the shoulders she changed out of her uniform, and into something more casual, before heading down to the Counselor's office.

Taking a deep breath, she rang the door chime.

Maybe I can keep this brief she thought.

Aria Lioy's Office
Speaking to Qech

Aria looked up, suprised that someone answered that quickly.

"Enter," she called.

When invited, Qech stepped into the room, smiling pleasantly.

"I got your message" she said. "I'm off-duty, so I figured now was as good a time as any."

She felt ill-at-ease not being in her uniform while standing in another Officer's office, but she didn't want to suggest that she was there as the Executive Officer.

"Don't worry, I know the drill" she said, smiling as she sat on the couch- the staple of any counselor's office. Qech had been a psychologist herself once, well, she hadn't, Braxlin had.

Damn it. If I could rid the world of pronouns I would die a happy woman.

Aria Lioy's Office
Speaking to Qech

"Great," Aria said, smiling back. "Thank you for comimg by. I'd ask you to sit down, but it seems you're way ahead of me." She eyed Qech, perched on her couch. The woman wore a veneer of pleasantry, but Aria could feel the discomfort beneath it. Qech did not want to be here.

"How have you been?" she asked, trying to put her at ease.

Qech nodded slowly at the question. "Better" she said simply. "I'm not sore from the parasite incident anymore, which is nice. I'm getting a bit less sleep, thanks to the.. activity" she said, resting her hand on her belly. "He always seems to wake up when I want to go to bed" she laughed. "But, I suppose I can't complain. He's moving, and that's a good thing."

Aria Lioy's Office
Speaking to Qech

"A very active child, eh?" Aria laughed. "I can only imagine what that must feel like. How far along are you now?"

"Six months" she replied. "It's only going to get... Well, I can't say 'worse' because it's really not a problem, but... He'll get a lot more active in the coming months. It's funny, because in past lives I've had children before, so I know what's it's like, but it seems the actual experience is so much different. And I've delivered more babies during my career as a doctor than I can count."

Aria Lioy's Office
Speaking to Qech

"Mm. I would imagine it's different on this side of the hospital bed." Aria said. "If you don't mind me asking, who'll be holding your hand? Who's the lucky father? It's not Lieutenant Calodan, is it?"

"Mm. I would imagine it's different on this side of the hospital bed. If you don't mind me asking, who'll be holding your hand? Who's the lucky father? It's not Lieutenant Calodan, is it?"

At Aria's question, Qech's smile faded. The subject of Taj's death, and thus her becoming a single parent was still a very difficult one. She tried be realistic about it, but some part of her still believed that she would return home from this voyage and find him there, ready and waiting to greet her and his son.

She looked down briefly, uneasy about having to say out loud what she'd inwardly refused to accept. "No, um. No" she cleared her throat. "Jim and I are just friends." She half-considered leaving it there, but she knew she'd be drilled for the rest shortly. She hadn't, in fact, really answered the woman's question after all.

"The father is my fiance, Taj. But he's not here, so..." again she cleared her throat. "I'll have to make do without the hand-holding." She took a deep breath; this topic had come at her from out of the blue, and she wasn't ready.

"He died, in the riots on Trill. Six months ago."

Aria Lioy's Office
Speaking to Qech

"Oh, I'm so sorry," Aria said, compassion spreading across her face. "You must have been devastated when you heard."

"Oh, I'm so sorry. you must have been devastated when you heard."

Qech bit her lip and simply nodded, looking away from the Counselor. She did not want to go back to that day. Not right now. As far as she was concerned, 'devastated' was an understatement.

Aria Lioy's Office
Speaking to Qech

She did not want to go back to that day. Not right now.

Aria heard this as if the Commander had shouted it at her. She blinked. She hadn't realized she'd opened up her telepathic senses. In her concern for Qech she must have lowered her defenses without realizing it. She considered ignoring the thought, pretending she hadn't heard it for politeness' sake. But impulse changed her mind; she'd try directness.

"You have to go back to it at some point, though," she told Qech. "Even though it hurts. If you never tend a wound it can fester. Become infected."

She leaned forward, laying a hand on the woman's shoulder. "These wounds heal by talking."

"You have to go back to it at some point, though, even though it hurts. If you never tend a wound it can fester. Become infected. These wounds heal by talking."

Qech was taken aback for a moment when she realized that her mind had clearly been read. She felt affronted at first, but had known enough betazoids over the years to understand that these things aren't always deliberate. And as a counselor, Lioy would know better. Davynn decided not to assume the worst and let the obvious violation of her privacy slide.

Some time went by before the First Officer spoke again. If anyone understood the concept of 'festering wounds' it was a former doctor, even if the example was metaphorical.

She sighed, looking back up to Lieutenant Lioy, who's hand was still on her shoulder. She couldn't go back to that day. But maybe if she started somewhere else...

"I'm not really sure what I need to say. I haven't even picked out a name, because I can't justify doing it without him. Choosing a name was so important to him... And at this point I don't see where putting it off is going to make any difference. But I still am. I'm still putting it off."

Aria Lioy's Office
Speaking to Qech

Aria leaned back again. The commander had been affronted. She'd been afraid of that. She'd have to take care to respect her privacy in the future. Still, her slip-up had gotten results. She'd made her point...and Qech was still talking. It would have been very easy for the woman to clam up, to hide behind indignation. Clearly, she was too responsible a person for that. Good.

"I'm not really sure what I need to say. I haven't even picked out a name, because I can't justify doing it without him. Choosing a name was so important to him... And at this point I don't see where putting it off is going to make any difference. But I still am. I'm still putting it off."

Aria thought about that for a moment. "You're waiting to do it with him," she said, rephrasing the heart of what Qech was saying. "The way you'd intended. It doesn't feel right without him."

She cocked her head. "Perhaps if you picked a name you know he'd love, it would be a way of honoring him. Of being with him...in a way. Did you discuss any names together?"
