Aria Lioy's Office
Speaking to Croft

Aria smiled. "Mine always used to tell me to keep things positive when I was down. She used to say negative vibes spread like a disease, but positive ones spread like sunshine. I tried to follow her words, and it got to be habit after awhile." The smile faded away as she remembered her parents' death. She thought she'd moved past it, but every once in a while a stray word or thought would bring it back as thought the pain were fresh. She blinked and willed those thoughts away. Now wasn't the time. "Of course," she added, "I grew up on Betazed, so I didn't see the same type of prejudice that you're talking about. I can imagine how hard it must have been for you, though."

She shrugged. "I suppose there will always be small minded people out there who prefer to judge instead of understand. I've met a few since I joined Starfleet." She smiled wryly. "And had to restrain the urge to belt them. But look at it this way; every boor you run into just makes your real friends more valuable. The people who aren't prejudiced really shine by comparison. And I think there are probably more of those than it seems at first glance. After alll, it's always the painful encounters that stand out."

She cocked her head in thought at his description of his telepathy. "You truly can't control it?" she asked. Different Betazoids had differing abilities, she knew. Still... "Have you ever had any formal training?"

Croft shrugged, his thoughts still on his mother, "I haven't had any training since my mother died." He paused for a moment, "Honestly, for the longest time I hated it. It caused more problems than anything. It's been since I met Allie that I even tried to do anything but suppress it. She was a good influence on me. I don't think it helps that I am half human, I think it erodes my control."

Koester walked into the office and gave Counselor Lioy a courteous greeting: "Counselor."

With great difficulty he glanced at Professor Kolar: "Professor."

He had to remind himself to try and think of the Cardassian as a fellow sentient instead of a loathsome fiend to be destroyed immediately. He went and sat down maintaining as neutral an expression as he could muster.

Aria nodded thoughtfully. "Well, maybe you just need another helping hand," she said. "Would you like, at times, to come practice with me? Like anything else telepathy is a muscle that needs exercising." She hesitated. "That's not part of my counseling duties," she added. "But, as you said, it's nice to have another Betazoid around."

((OOC: Note to Koester, I'm just waiting for 'Kolar' to respond.))

Croft thought for a moment, "I may just take you up on that offer, Counselor." He stood, offering his hand, "Well, I think my tough, manly persona has taken enough blows for one day." He smirked, "I'm sure you have other appointments to keep."

Aria grinned as she shook his hand. "Never any so manly." She showed him to the door. "It's been a pleasure."

Professor Mavek Kolar
Aria Lioy's Office

The Professor nervously drummed his fingers on his PADD as he waited for the Counselor to invite him into the room. Her instructions had been very clear, not to enter without first announcing himself and Kolar could understand why. Petty Officer Koester had displayed blatant hostility towards the Professor ever since the Hartington had effected his rescue half a year prior. Kolar was glad that someone was finally doing something about the man's behavior -- he just wished that the something didn't have to involve him. He plastered the most convincing smile onto his face as the door swooshed open and the Counselor appeared.

"On time I hope, Counselor."

"You are," Aria agreed. "Please come in."

She watched as the Cardassian entered, looking decidedly nervous. Koester greeted him in a stiff voice, clearly trying to restrain his bitter impulses. Aria gestured to a comfortable chair across the room from the couch, but facing it. "Please, Professor. Have a seat." She settled herself in her own chair, where she could observe them both.

"You've both been informed why you're here," she began. "But allow me to reiterate to get the ball rolling. Sergeant Koester here had a very bad experience with some Cardassians during the war. It's had an effect on him, something that he wishes to deal with. So I've asked you, Professor, to be here to talk with him. I'll be helping the conversation along, but I need you to talk directly to one another.

She turned to Koester. "Why don't you start? Tell Professor Kolar a little bit about why he's here."

Koester began to describe the origin of his hostility towards Cardassians. "It was during the Dominion War. Where Cardassia aligned itself with the Dominion and declared war on the Federation. I was engaged before the war - my fiancee Andi was onboard the USS Aizawa when it was disabled and its surviving crew captured. Andi and thousands of other allied POWs labored under terrible conditions in an orbital hellhole that was an attempt to build an artificial wormhole in orbit around the planet Dantana."

Koester blinked his eyes and clenched his fists as he tried to contain the rage that was bubbling to the surface: "I was on Dantana as one of a few survivors fighting a guerilla war against the Cardassians and Dominion forces and it was through an intercepted video feed that I saw the accursed vermin breaking up a riot in the female cell block. Andi was injured and she and several of the dead and dying were flushed out the nearest airlock. In revenge I killed nearly two hundred and seventy two Cardassians in my time on Dantana with single rifle shots from my TR-116."

Tears appeared in Koester's eyes: "Your people - Professor - took one of the most important people in my life away from me! I have often felt the Jem'Hadar hadn't gone far enough with what they did on Cardassia. Andi was innocent!" [/i]

(Professor Kolar will post tomorrow... I'm still trying to figure out how to respond to such an intense statement)
