Commander Qech
Holosuite 1
A few Days before "Outsider"

Qech stood on the deck of the ship, looking up at the massive sails above her. They were tied down, but still looked amazingly majestic. She could smell the salty sea air which, even though the program was set on Earth, reminded her somehow of home.

Of course, even in the comfort of her own home she would never find herself dressed like a pirate. But it wouldn't be an 18th century Caribbean adventure without the cutlass and the talking parrot (which she had programed with a few colorful phrases that thankfully didn't translate well into Federation Standard).

"Computer. Arch."

At her command, the Holosuite archway appeared. She approached the console and entered in a message:

Ahoy ye Mateys! I have found me a treasure map! Anyone who wants to set sail on the ocean blue, meet me in Holosuite 1! And bring yer corniest pirate impression. Yar!

PS: Anyone who doesn't might find themselves in the next gamma shift rotation.

Love,

Commander Qech

Laughing to herself, she took a seat on the bow and waited. Soon her rag-tag crew of buccaneers would arrive, and they could get their adventure underway.

It took Uvek approximately 10 minutes to search the computer for earth pirates. In a moment, he had sent the specifications to the holodeck, and walked down. His visit with Counselor Aria had prompted him to try something new. This, he decided, was definitely it.

As he entered the holosuite, his persona changed to a lanky black haired pirate with flashy red jacket and a living parrot on his shoulder. His hair was stringy, black, and everywhere. His beard hung in two long braids and his puffy shirt stuck out everywhere. He smiled broadly, and even his teeth had changed to yellow and black stubs of their former glory.

"Greetings, me matey!" he called out in a poorly imitated pirate gruff.

Qech waved to Uvek from her place aboard the ship as he walked up the gangplank from the dock. As he approached, her parrot squawked out a phrase in Romulan that would have made the head of the Tal'Shiar blush. It was followed shortly by a curse in the Trill's native tongue that would have had no place on a starship.

She grinned and patted the animal's head. Clearly she'd programmed it that way. "Welcome aboard, Mr. Uvek. Have you chosen your pirate name yet? You'll be needing one. You can call me Cap'n Blackspots." Her laughter echoed on the wind and she tipped her three-corner hat in a mock bowing gesture.

"Ready for some high seas adventure, fresh air and-"

the squawking call of a gull sounded over them and Qech was cut off by the sudden appearance of a greenish-white liquid running down Uvek's jacket shoulder.

"...Seagull poo?"

Uvek's eyes opened wide at the parrot's expression, then turned and looked at the small but greasy spot running down his front. "Computer, spot remover please." There was a small flash as the dung disappeared. His parrot fluttered at the Commander's own and took off, lighting on the tallest mast's crow's nest. Uvek shook his head.

"I suggest Greenblood, Commander, though at present I seem to make a less-than-perfect pirate." He smiled sheepishly, "However, I will endeavor to not dissapoint....ya scurvy dog...." His look was one of uncertainty at the use of the phrase on his first officer, but he laughed aloud anyway, trying to reach into the moment.

Qech cocked an eyebrow at Uvek, an amused smile on her face. She clapped a hand on his shoulder. "It's alright, you don't really have to talk like that. It was just a joke."

Aria stared at the First Officer's message, and then barked a laugh. "This is too good," she murmered to herself.

A few minutes later, she arrived at Holodeck One. She'd gotten a few surprised looks as she walked down the corridors, with her large pirate boots and even larger pirate hat (feather included), a cutlass swinging at her side. She'd replicated a hook for her left hand as well, attaching it carefully over the appendage so that you couldn't tell the hand was there.

She entered the holodeck and crossed the gangplank to stand beside the other two. Briefly, she glanced between them.

"Oh poo," she said. "It was BYOP, huh? Bring Your Own Parrot?"

"Oh poo, It was BYOP, huh? Bring Your Own Parrot?"

Immediately upon Lioy's arrival, Qech's parrot companion began dishing out a few choice expressions common to Betazed; none of them were good, of course.

"Well, Uvek's- or should I say, 'Greenblood's', parrot was clearly too classy to remain in the presence of mine." She pointed up at the Crow's Nest. "Understandably so. In my own native language he's managed to say a few interesting things about my mother in the last five minutes."

She grinned, and tipped her hat at Lioy as she had for Uvek. "Cap'n Blackspot's the name. And what may yours be, um... Lass?"

"Well, I'd go with Hook...but I think that's taken. How about Blackheart Annie? ...Aria's not piratey enough."

She turned to the parrot and, in Betazed, insulted it right back.

Croft read the Commanders message twice, the first to try he was laughing so hard he couldn't tell she was serious. It took him awhile to find a persona that suited him, but he finally arrived, about twenty minutes after the call came out. His hair was long, wavy, and blond. He had a short, well trimmed goattee, he was wearing a white, ruffled shirt that was open at the chest and fluted at the sleeves. He finished out the outfit with tight fitting tan leggings, tall dark leather boots, a fine blade at his side, and a large hat perched jauntily on his head, the feather sticking out towards the back. He removed the hat, bowing deeply to the women, "M/ladies." His British ancient was nearly flawless, "To what do I owe such an honor?" He grinned mischieviously.

Aria looked him up and down and grinned.

"You went for the hunk pirate, I see," she laughed. "Very good choice."

She extended her hook as if to shake hands.

Uvek rolled his eyes at the officer, and walked up to the main mast.

"Hnaev," he muttered, "I suppose I shall have to climb up there and get the little nei'rrh." Commander Qech's parrot heard the romulan phrase and spit out a vulgar insult. Looking over his shoulder Uvek could only respond with "Shut up." and he began to climb.

"M/ladies. To what do I owe such an honor?"

Qech tipped her hat and smiled. "Your First Officer's sick sense of humor, as usual."

She watched as Uvek went over to the mast and yelled at his parrot, laughing to herself. It was actually a funny sight.

Then turning to the others, she exclaimed "So who here wants to set sail and find us a treasure?"

Croft grabbed her hook, shaking gently, then smiled at Qech, "Aye Captain, an adventure on the high seas." He looks up at Uvek, "You there! Hoist the m'sail, ready the forecastle!" Croft laughs as Uvek slips slightly as he looks down, leading to a string of Romulan curses from both him and Qech's bird.

Uvek painstakingly reached the crow's nest and pulled himself laboriously up. He stood and looked down, down at the deck. F'vadt! That is a distance to fall, he thought.

Breathing hard and turning he reached to his parrot, who stood by on the rim of the nest watching him curiously. However, just as his hand came close, the parrot sqawked and took off in a flurry of feathers, bursting past the romulan who ducked and leaned backwards to avoid getting hit. He tottered on the edge of falling with his arms pinwheeling wildly. He caught the edge at the last minute and pulled himself erect, anger and fear mingling freely in his mind as he watched his bird fly in a wide circle around him.

"Computer" he blurted out, "Delete Uvek's parrot!" There was a brief flash as the bird vanished. "Stupid bird." He grunted. Sighing deeply, he moved to grab the rope ladder and begin his difficult climb back down to the deck to join the adventure. Just as he did he caught the faces of his companions. Their expressions alone brought home the foolishness of his situation, and quite without warning he began to laugh.

Perhaps this will work out after all.

Qech shook her head and chuckled as she watched Uvek struggle with his feathered companion, all the while shutting out the crude squawking coming from her own.

"Let's take this ol' girl out, shall we?" she said, gesturing to the open ocean. "Set the sails, Greenblood! Blackheart Annie, weigh anchor! And..." she turned to Croft. "Well, you don't have a pirate name do you?" She laughed. "Well, you have two tasks then. First, come up with a pirate name. Second, take the helm."

The rest of the holographic crew busied themselves in helping the flesh and blood characters with the more laborious tasks as Qech, or rather Cap'n Blackspots, oversaw the the whole venture from her place near the helm. She looked briefly at the rolled up piece of parchment in her hand and smiled to herself.

A treasure hunt. This should be fun.
