"I need to inform the Captain of this. Put him in a holding cell. I want to know how he got on the ship, where he was hiding, what his motive is if not just showing off, and anything else he'll tell you."

Uvek dipped his head at the Commander by way of acknowledgement, then nodded to his team. Taking Antonio under each arm (and practically lifting him from the deck) they turned and ushered him down the hall.

Uvek said "When I have completed my investigation, I will contact you, Ma'am." And took his leave. The turbolift was a quiet, uncomfortable ride and the silence continued until a personal search of Coelho's body had been conducted and the security screen was erected. Once the two men withdrew Uvek approached the cell with a chair. Sitting down and motioning for the young man to do likewise, he began, his voice reflecting the fact that he did not appreciate his personal time being interrupted and he was not a man to trifle with.

"All right. Having heard the commander, let us start there." He folded his hands and waited, knowing the security monitors would catch every word and begin feeding into the ship's computers as soon as his prisoner began to speak.

Exactly as bad as I feared it would be, Antonio thought as he was carried to the brig, offering absolutely no resistance. If anything, I had thought an absolute lack of resistance might have helped more. He complied without any complaint with everything demanded of him, (he was carrying no possessions, though a couple medical implants existed attached to his nervous system) walking calmly into the cell as though it was a suit prepared for his convenience.

He took a breath, meeting the Romulan's gaze with all the calm he could muster, but that calm was starting to crack. No amount of mental preparation replaces the real event. "My name is Antonio Coelho. I'm from Eden. I don't work for any civil or military agency. I'm a recent graduate from one of our universities. I traveled with our representatives as one of the curious civilians to Alterran station for ceremonies and hid myself among the cargo being transferred to the Hartington." Antonio paused a moment, clearing out the slight unevenness of voice as he observed Uvek, trying to determine if he was believed.

"It wasn't simple to get from there to the holodeck, but I managed during shift rotations. I convinced the computer to hide me from anyone was present, to not acknowledge me, and to hide the fact that there as an increased drain on resources from the extra activity on the holodeck," a look of small guilt crept across his face at this. "I want to work that off though. It wasn't my intent to steal. The point was to show what I can do, how useful my skills can be."

This part was harder, Antonio considered his words carefully though he'd already done that many times before. He didn't bother to hide the emotion in his voice at all. "My existence is not completely legal in the Federation. As an Edenite, I'm an Augment. We all are to varying extents, and it's diplomatic immunity that allows any of us to enter at all. Our history with the rest of humanity is rather... checkered thanks to some of the mistakes made by the earliest among us. Their unnecessary and unchecked aggression."

"We left, and hundreds of years have passed since then. Generations have come and gone, and we have changed, evolved. The old prejudices still remain however, and that's a gap much harder to bridge. When Hartington came to our world, it was clear how much progress and learning had happened without us. We, despite all our specialized medical advances, had fallen behind in other senses. We don't have a large exploration fleet, of the nature. I saw it as a chance..."

Antonio kept his gaze on Uvek, paying careful attention to his every reaction, hoping that he was believed. Is there a telepath in the next room making sure I believe what I'm saying? I hope so. Let there be no doubt! "There is no way for me to join Starfleet and bridge the gap that has separated humanity into such distinct groups with traditional methods, not quickly. So I took this risk."

"There's a long tradition among us of making stowaways work for their keep, dating back to the times when ships sailed the sea rather than the sky. Sometimes the unexpected addition to the crew turned out very useful. Admittedly, there was always a risk of no mercy, but that was part of the risk. In retrospect, I should have considered the potential diplomatic repercussions in advance, but alea jactus est - the die is cast. Any questions?"

After her brief conversation with Lieutenant Lioy, Qech excused herself and made her way up to the bridge.

Hoping to impress us. What was that kid thinking?

It wasn't an overly common thing, aliens sneaking aboard Federation Starships for the thrill of it. Typically a stow away simply meant trouble. Yes, he could very well have been lying. Perhaps he sabotaged something, or planned to. He might have been a thief, who knows? But she had looked in his eyes and she didn't see any malicious intent there. Despite the senselessness of the crime and its motive, Qech had a gut feeling that the boy was telling the truth. He just seemed far too excited for someone who just got caught in a criminal act.

A teenage criminal show-off? It was hardly far-fetched. His actions were, if nothing else, juvenile- and he was a kid.

Her mind filled with questions and theories, Qech made her way across the bridge to the Captain's ready room. As she pressed the door chime she allowed herself a slight smile.

He's going to love this.

The Captain let Qech into his office and, after a brief exchange he asked why she'd come.

"All joking aside, Commander... what's going on? I thought you were on lunch?"

"I thought so too" she said wryly. "But I came across someone on my way back to my quarters who doesn't belong here. He's a stow away. Human, so I'm thinking he's probably an Edanite. Uvek has him in a holding cell."

Uvek listened as he had for years trained himself to. Quietly, still and without reaction. He used his not inconsiderable skills to flesh out the boy's story (for boy he truly was, despite his size and intelligence) for himself. When the young man finished, Uvek rose and turned to his security desk without comment, carrying his chair back into its place.

He tapped commands into the computer, read the results, cross-checked a couple curious points, then forwarded a report to the captain's ready room, assuming that Commander Qech would no doubt be there. When and only when this was complete, did he look up and speak. As he moved toward the door he said,

"Thank you for your candor. I will return shortly." As the door to security opened and the burly Wainwright came in, Uvek simply walked out. When he reached the safety of the turbolift he tapped his commbadge.

"Uvek to Commander Qech. I have completed my investigation, results pending in the captain's console. He is an Augment, though young. I am enroute. I do not believe the young man means harm, but he did violate the law." To the turbolift he said "Bridge." And moved to report to the captain. Once in the captain's ready room he awaited any questions arising from the report, which in essence was the young man's story supported by the computer's research into Eden and his people.

Alone, Coelho lay down and look at the ceiling. Could that have gone better? Perhaps. I'm not what they expected, certainly not what they wanted. Maybe, just maybe, I went about this all wrong. If so, they'd never let me live it down back home; caught up in everything I wanted as if this was a holo-drama. Exile maybe, or imprisonment if they won't give me a chance. That outcome looked so much less likely before I was in this cell... but doubt is the killer of all dreams. I knew this moment could come where I would question everything, and I will not give in. This can still work.

"I may be a bit, Lieutenant, is it urgent?"

"Not at all," Aria said quickly as security arrived. She watched as Uvek took the young crewman prisoner. "I didn't realize something dramatic was going on. It can wait till later."

She backed off as Qech nodded and excused herself, going to brief the captain.

Well, she thougt to herself. What was all that about?

The Captain read over the results of Lieutenant Uvek's investigation and interrogation of their uninvited guest. He had finished just as the security chief entered the Ready Room, taking his place next to Commander Qech. Without preamble, he began to speak.

"I'll need to speak with him... but before I do, what do you think Lieutenant? I have your report Mr. Uvek, but I'd like to hear it from the horse's mouth as it were. What are your impressions?"

Uvek nodded and began in a static tone, as though reading today's paper.

"He is young, impressionable, and eager to please. He seems genuinely interested in breaking with tradition and demonstrating his capabilities, which I must admit appear considerable." Uvek smiled. "If circumstances were different, sir, I would commend his ingenuity. However, he did manage to access and re-route a number of lower priority power and computer circuits, and remain hidden for a time on a Federation starship operating at full capacity. Furthermore, he could have at anytime sabotaged systems within his field of expertise, and caused us considerable damage. And last, but not least, he is an Augmented human. He could have physically challenged my security team or easily harmed Commander Qech, but he chose not to."

Uvek folded his hands behind him. "I would recommend survelliance and further interviews, perhaps with Lt. Lioy, but I do not consider him a threat."

Captain Brennon nodded slowly and then looked to Qech.

"Any you, Commander? What are your thoughts?"

"Personally he doesn't seem dangerous to me, either. Someone who is interested in sabotage doesn't go out of their way to get caught the way he did. Although worse than any saboteur we seem to be dealing with a cocky teenage augment... I think I'd prefer someone dangerous."

She grinned slightly. "He will need to be punished of course. You can't let someone like that get away with too much, it just fuels their ambitions. I'm not sure what the standard punishment would be if we brought him back to his people, since we don't know that much about them. I think we might be able to come to a better decision if we speak with Dr. Ortega first. If this is, say, a Capital crime on their world I wouldn't feel right sending him back."
