Trill Homeworld
1 Month before being posted to Hartington.

"Computer, begin recording private log entry. *throat clearing noise* I have chosen to spend my 3 months leave on Trill. I decided not to return to Jupiter Station to see my parents or Mars to see my sister. I'm sure the news of what happened on the Hood has reached them and I don't want their sympathy. Mother has sent me a few letters, that I've responded too, but Father hasn't even sent me so much as a 'I'm glad you're alive' note. It is to be expected I guess. He forwent Joining to be with Mother, and it hurt him so to see me take to the concept with such relish. And then for me, the "Joined one" to screw up so monumentally...just assured him that he was right all along."

"While on Trill, I chose to undergo my zhian'tara. I was hoping to find some answers in my past hosts, but nothing came. The Calodan symbiont had so many successful hosts...so many wonderful lifetimes...and now me. The only one who really had anything productive to say was Elzira. She encouraged me to look more to music, to help 'soothe my troubled soul'. I've spent a little time on the holodeck with an acoustic piano playing some of her recordings, but they are hers and not mine."

*A heavy sigh is recorded* "I have one month of leave time left in this Starfleet encouraged vacation. I've already decided that I am going back, I'm not resigning. I looked at the computer records and everyone else from the Hood has been reassigned...my name still has an "Unassigned" in bold next to it."

"As part of this leave, and my punishment I suppose, I was asked to see a Counselor. At the end of the hour long session of probing questions, I discerned that Starfleet Command was trying to find a way to drum me out of service. I could come up with no reason for this...until I searched the manifest of the Hood. That Ensign, the young one who helped me in Engineering...I finally found out his name. Ensign Ezekiel Stapford, son of Admiral Roland Stapford. I suppose the Admiral hold me responsible for his son's death...and he's right. I'm responsible for all 23 of them..."

*the log stops recording due to a 45 second break in audio input. There are no further log entries.

DS9 Holosuit
1 Week before being assigned to USS Hartington

"This is an automated evacuation alert. All hands, abandon ship. Fusion reactor explosion in two minutes. Repeat, this is an automated evacuation alert. All hands abandon ship."

"Computer, pause simulation and reset timecode back 5 minutes. Switch to third person observer mode." Calodan watched the situation play out again in front of him. Same as he'd watched it about 25 times in the last half hour. In his hands, he had a PADD. On it was a picture of the Hood..after the battle.

As he was gazing at the mess of what had been his ship...the door to the holosuite chirped. He cursed.."If it is that damn Ferengi bartender again...I paid for this suite. Computer, pause program. Arch." A door appeared and he walked over it. He was met by a young Lieutenant, with spots, wearing blue.

"H...Hi Lieutenant Calodan." Her eyes got wide at the simulation he was running. Behind him was a scene of destruction, paused for convenience. "I'm Lieutenant Dax, the station's Counselor. After you didn't go back for your second session on Trill, Starfleet thought you might like to speak to me."

"No Lieutenant Dax. I am not interested in speaking to another of Starfleet's headshrinkers. Computer, End program." With that, he brushed out the door past Dax and out of Quark's.

I always did wonder how you'd get along with Ezri Dax, thanks for the insight.

But then again, lieutenant, I'm the one out of the two of us who needs to see the counselor.

But to quote Lewis Caroll: "We're all mad here..." - Cheshire Cat.

It seems unlikely that we are mad. However, it is interesting the varied experiences that will be required to explore unknown space.

I recommend we each begin our focus on one thought: We are STARFLEET.
