ACTION

True to his words, within minutes of arriving in Main Engineering, Roe is able to reproduce his experiment, without the fireworks of a faked warp core accident. With Lenara's assistance and being closely watched by the Chief Engineer as well as the two security officers, the ship has a much smoother ride. Thankfully, the two Tal'Harton vessels are unable to follow, as they quickly fall behind and disappear from the Guardian's sensors. After a tense ten minutes, the ship returns to normal warp speeds, then drops out of warp altogether, coming to a complete stop within half a lightyear of their original starting position.

The computer chimes,

"Would you like to complete the program?"

Roe turns to Mehvra, a mischievous smile on his face,

"It's been a pleasure, Mehvra, Lenara."

He looks up expectantly,

"Computer, complete program."

As all the ship goes dark, in main engineering there is only time to note that the warp core still glowed and to notice the tell-tale glimmer of a transporter beam as Chief Petty Officer First Class Dylan Roe dematerializes from Main Engineering. On the bridge, the crew frantically tries to correct what went wrong.

"Captain, main power is offline. Weapons, shields, propulsion, sensors, communications, transporters, we seem to have lost everything but life support."

With a hum, emergency lighting finally activates, causing Lt. Thomas to breathe a sigh of relief.

"Systems seem to be in a reboot state, it appears we will have all systems back in about three minutes."

Marek stands, approaching the Ops station,

"I need internal comms, Roe has something to do with this."

USS Guardian - Main Engineering
Lt Mehvra-Kuplo

When the power goes out and a transport is activated, Mehv taps his commbadge. "Mehv to Runabout, computer please scan for ships nearby and relay this signal to Captain Marek."

"Acknowledged," came the reply.

"Captain, it seems Roe had this ordeal planned out completely and has had some help. After the ships systems were reset, Roe was transported somewhere. I have the runabout scanning for nearby ships. Luckily, I had a team doing some diagnostics on its systems, so it was powered up."

The cold feminine voice of the computer responds,

"A shuttlecraft is launching from the shuttlebay."

There is a moments pause, then the computer returns,

"The shuttlecraft has disappeared from all sensors."

Marek sat at his desk in his readyroom several hours later, a secure channel to Admiral Croft open on the terminal at his desk. He was just finishing his report to the Admiral on recent events.

"After returning to .46 lightyears away from our original start point, it appears the Roe had one more hidden program that allowed him to escape the ship. The shuttlecraft appears to have a cloaking device installed, likely attuned to the Guardian's sensors. I have order to discontinue pursuit, as I am sure of Roe's destination."

Marek leans forward, his gaze intense,

"Are their any other crewmembers that have special orders that I should be made apprised of, Admiral?"

Croft ignored the Vulcan's insinuations, glancing at the PADD on his desk,

"Well done, Captain, I truly regret having to countermand your orders, but it was necessary for the defense of the Federation. I assure you, there is no one else on the ship that I have ordered to hide information from you. You are aware of the orders I have given the artificial life form, those are the only other standing orders from me on your ship. The information you have discovered about the Tal'Harton is invaluable, and likely would have been undiscovered without Roe's experiment."

Marek leaned back into a more proper posture,

"I must reiterate, Admiral, while the evidence is compelling, it is circumstantial. It would be prudent to attempt to verify the data from an independent source."

"Of course, of course, your concerns are noted. Continue with your survey, Captain, I will be in contact. Croft out."

Marek stared at the familiar Starfleet insignia on a black background, his thoughts lightyears away from his present location.

USS Guardian - Captain's Ready Room
Lt Mehvra-Kuplo

After hearing the command to enter, Mehv takes a deep breath before entering. He understands the consequences of being in charge, but he is still hesitant. Approaching the captain's desk, he stands at attention. "Sir, the repairs to the warp core and propulsion system have been completed. Guardian is 100% ready."

A slight pause as Mehv gathers his courage. "I take full responsibility for the events of the past few days. Lt Roe was part of my team and therefore his actions are my actions. I have failed the ship by not knowing what he was planning and therefore should step down as Chief of Engineering. If I may, sir, I suggest Lt JG Elise Poussant to replace me. She has proven herself a capable leader and has my trust as well as that of the other members of my, I mean, the engineering team."

Marek let's Kuplo squirm for a moment, as he stands and replicates some tea before returning to his seat and addressing his Chief Engineer.

"I concur, I no longer require your skills in engineering."

Marek sips his tea, letting the statement hang for a moment.

"However, I am in need of a new First Officer. Commander Adams has been transferred back to the Alpha Quadrant."

Marek opens a drawer to his desk and pulls out a small black box, he looks back at Kuplo, a small smile on his face.

"It would be most convenient if you would be will to help me with that necessity, Lieutenant Commander Kuplo."

He holds out the box, flipping the lid open to reveal a small black pip to add to Kuplo's two gold ones.

USS Guardian - Captain's Ready-Room
Lt Cmdr Mehvra-Kuplo

Mehv blinks a couple of times...

"Wait, what?

Sir, I don't think you under...

Let me re-phrase that, I don't understand, sir. Why? After what has happened..."

Marek clasped his hands in front of him, looking at Mehvra with an almost bemused look on his face.

"It would be highly improbably that one could predict that Roe would be under orders to hijack the ship. I would be succumbing to emotion if I tried to affix blame to anyone other than Croft or Roe. Your record has been exemplary, and I would much rather have an XO that already knows the crew than a replacement."

USS Guardian- Captain's Ready Room
Lt Cmdr. Mehvra-Kuplo

"I guess that all there is to say is Thank you, sir. I will get right to work on the transition. If there is nothing else..."

Mehv walks back out of the Ready-room and returns to his office in Engineering to sit for a while and think on the turn of events. He was thankful no-one needed him so he could think for a while.
