"Peaceful," Lieutenant Elen echoed. She turned to the captain. "Sir, I...respectfully have to disagree. This entity attached itself to several of our main systems, tried to reach our warp core, and wrapped itself around Lieutenant Lenara there. If she had been a...uh, fleshy species, she'd be dead now."
She shook her head. "Now maybe it didn't mean to cause us harm. I wouldn't know. But we came very close to several emergencies. I know I wouldn't want to get too cuddly with it." _________________

Lenara, responding to Kuplo, speaks with conviction.
"The entity was only seeking sustenance, it had no ill intent."
She glances at Lt. Elen, a smile on her face.
"You are correct, 'cuddling' with this species is not recommended."
Marek turns to sh'Tal.
"It would be prudent to develop some kind of defense against these creatures, as Chief of Security I leave that in your capable hands."
He addresses the group at large, folding his arms across his chest.
"We are two hours away from the Dark Matter nebula, the strange energy readings we have been receiving might be explained by more of these creatures."
Marek glances around, seeing if there were any more comments before he dismissed the group. _________________

Several hours later, the Guardian approaches the edge of the dark matter nebula, dropping from warp and approaching at 1/4 impulse. On screen, it appears to be a field of black, with occasional flash of brilliant color.
Marek sits in the command chair, his gaze intent on the screen. He waits patiently as his crew does it's duty, trying to make sense of the unknown, the mission most joined Starfleet for. He glances back at an secondary station, checking on the Alterran Ensign. She seemed to be holding up well, her resolve reminding him of his own mother for a brief moment. He glances back forward, then calls out.
"Helm, all stop."
As the helm officer reports dead stop, Marek glances expectantly at his crew. _________________

Location: Main Bridge, USS Guardian
Lieutenant Solana studied the sensor readouts for several seconds before issuing her report, her tone clearly indicated a curiosity about what lay ahead
"Captain, sensors are having a difficult time penetrating the nebula, however I am able to detect energy readings. It is curious, there are several regions of the nebula that have high concentrations of built up energy and areas with a complete lack of readings, null space if you will. I am searching the computer library for similar phenomena, but the results may take some minutes." _________________

"Lt Solana, prepare a Class I probe, but I want it initially to perform passive scans only. Also, if contact is lost, it should exit the nebula to transmit its data back to the Guardian." _________________

sh'Talh turned to Lt. Elen. "I'd like to set up a series of shield enhancements in the event that this creature returns, Lieutenant. We have a short amount of time to get any decent amount of work done, so I suggest we get started right away."
She looked the Captain Marek. "Captain, with your permission I'd like to get to work with Lieutenant Elen before we reach our destination." _________________

Marek nods to the Lieutenants.
"Make it so." _________________

Pre-Arrival:
Lieutenant Elen nodded. "Shield enhancements are a good idea," she agreed. "But this thing eats energy. I'm not sure just strengthening them will be enough. With our luck it might just be a bigger feast for the thing." She frowned in thought. "Maybe if we modulate the shields so that they constantly shift frequency the entity won't be able to just chow right through them. What do you think?" _________________

Marek watches on screen as the probe approaches the nebula, it's thruster trail a starburst of orange behind it. After a moment it disappears, crossing deep into the nebula. The reassuring beep of the telemetry signal assures him that the probe is still functioning. _________________

After about 45 seconds Solana speaks up.
"Sir, we are receiving telemetry from the probe. There is a cluster of objects made of Tritanium and Duranium with no apparent energy signatures approximately 100,000 kilometers inside the nebula. I am instructing the probe to move closer for further investigation."
A few moments pass before the Vulcan makes another announcement, this time her voice sounds mildly concerned.
"I have lost contact with the probe. Ship's sensors cannot penetrate more than 1,000 Kilometers inside the nebula." _________________

Marek turns to ops.
"What risk to the ship can we expect if we enter the nebula?" _________________

sh'Talh was putting the finishing touches on the shield modulations that she had discussed with Lt. Elen earlier. She listened intently to the goings-on around her as she worked.
Neither of the Lieutenants could be one hundred percent sure about whether or not their work would have any effect should they meet with the entity again, but she kept a close eye on the tactical sensors just the same. Everything was steady... So far. _________________

"Moderate risk," Lieutenant Elen replied to the captain's question. "The nebula itself shouldn't be a problem, but the energy patches Lieutenant Solana noted earlier are difficult to analyze. It doesn't help that their positions seem random...if there's a pattern to them, I can't see it." She stared at her readings, wishing they were clearer. "I think we can proceed, if we do so cautiously."
Under her breath she muttered, "Of course, we don't know what the probe ran into. I hope I didn't just kill us all." _________________

Marek raised an eyebrow at the Ops officers side comment, but made no acknowledgment.
"Yellow Alert. Shields at maximum. Helm, take us in one quarter impulse. I, for one, would like to see what Duranium is doing in a dark matter nebula."
The ship smoothly pulls into the nebula, quickly losing sensor contact with the space outside of the inky blackness. _________________
