Week 1- August 17, 2009

What is the name of the fictional game that Captain Kirk invented on Sigma Iotia II to free himself and Mr. Spock in the Original Series episode A Piece of the Action?

Bonus Point: Name the only other episode that this game is mentioned in.

I remember it was a crazy card game, and I remember the mobster that he was bluffing with, but I cannot remember the stinking name! aughh

does it count that I remember that his ship stunned a whole city block to impress the rest of the mobsters holding them hostage? Would it matter if I told you that their heaters were in the drawer in the boss' office?

lol

Fizben is the name of the game.

It is also mentioned in DS9 Season 5 Episode 9.

Just in case spelling is to count:

Its actually Fizzbin. The top hand is a royal fizzbin and the odds of getting one are, to quote Spock, astronomical.

And it was DS9 season 5, episode 9 where it was referenced again.

As an aside, any chance we can still do the Trek Trivia by Email? I would have had the answer to this one much faster, but without it getting emailed out to my phone, I am held hostage to have to check the forums maniacally till it comes out.

Cadet Mehvra-Kuplo and Lieutenant Calodan are both correct, but only one person can get it and the first player to answer was Cadet Mehvra-Kuplo. However, the Bonus Point is still up for grabs because the name of the particular episode was not said.

Calodan: AH HA! That was your secret! I see your diabolical plan! In all seriousness, I would rather use the Forums for the Trivia Challenge. I think there is a way to be notified via e-mail when a new topic is posted... though I could be wrong and the watch option is only for individual threads.

I will tell you this, I plan on doing the Trek Trivia Challenge on Mondays of every week. I may start a trend as to when I am going to post them up... but I may mix it up just to confuse you!

Then again I could just use one thread for the trivia game and you could simply watch that one... we'll just see how the game evolves from here.

In any case, congratulations Cadet Mehvra-Kuplo, one point to you and the field is still open to the Bonus Point.

What is the explanation for the differences between the smooth headed Klingons of TOS and the bumpy headed Klingons of the rest of the franchise?

Bonus Point: Name the Episode(s) that gave us the answer.

The Klingons gained access to Human augment DNA and attempted to augment themselves. One of the test subjects suffered from a virus (Levodian flu I believe) and it became a fatal, airborne, mutagenic virus. This virus became airborne and began infecting klingons. The first stage was a loss of their head ridges...they became more human looking.

This virus was "cured" by Dr. Phlox a Klingon scientist named Antaak. They developed the ability to stop the virus at the first stage. The infected Klingons lost their ridges and passed the trait onto their children.

The retcon that wasn't explained in the movies was explained in the Enterprise episodes Affliction and Divergence (4x15,16).

In the DS9 episode Trials and Tribblations, when Word was asked why the Klingons were smooth-headed he responded with "We don't talk about it."

Who was Lieutenant John Kelly and why is he important to the Star Trek Universe?

(Worth one point, no Bonus Points available)

Lt. John Kelly was the commander of the Ares IV mission to Mars. He disappeared and was discovered by USS Voyager inside of the "Kitchen sink" anomaly in the Delta Quadrant. He was considered one of the pioneers of manned space flight.

(one of the BEST voyager episodes.)

Correct!

The spatial anomaly was known as a Graviton Ellipse and was the first spatial anomaly encountered by humanity. Just FYI.

Damn folks, someone needs to stop Mr. Calodan, I can't seem to remember a single event he's lost since he joined the crew!

Graviton ellipse...I knew it was something like that! I still like the "kitchen sink" moniker because it had everything but the kitchen sink in it.

It's a very fitting nick name for it I think.
