Captain Brennon sat at the head of the table as the members of the Away Team filed in. He had asked for Petty Officer Koester to join them as well, seeing as he was manning Tactical (and witnessed Ambassador Rolen's revelation earlier). Rolen himself was also present as the group assembled. The most curious face in the room, however, was that of Professor Kolar, the only Cardassian survivor of the marooned science team found recently on the planet's surface. As everyone took their seats the Captain looked to Lieutenant Calodan.
"Report, Lieutenant." _________________

Calodan cleared his throat. "Sir, the away mission was a successful in that we managed to remove the technology the Cardassians had placed on the surface, but I would not consider the mission itself a success. I cannot report on the situation on the ground, Lt. Uvek will have to fill you in on that." _________________

Uvek leaned forward. His uniform was still disheveled and torn at the shoulder. He was tired, sore, and angry.
"Thank you, Lieutenant. Captain, despite the fact that our team worked well together overall, I regret that Crewman Sloan has been killed during the assault on the village." He hung his head for a moment with the realization that for the second time, his away mission had ended with some form of disaster.
"I assume responsibility for the loss. Several Hukana were injured during the assault, and both Cardassians were killed by the villagers as they surrendered to Commander Qech. I commend the actions of our team leaders. Mr. Smith saw to it his teammate was protected, and Mr. Thompson overwhelmed a number of the Hukana during hand-to-hand combat. Both are wounded and being treated, along with Commander Qech in sickbay. Beyond that, I have nothing further."
He turned to the captain and nodded in deference. _________________

Koester typed a message onto his PADD and beamed it to Uvek: "Funny how the good Ambassador never mentioned anything about knowing anything about this sector and then he produces a lot of first-hand knowhow. I don't trust him..." |

Uvek looked down as his PADD bleeped. He smirked and looked up directly at Koester. His look told the story....wait, watch and be ready. He glanced at Rolen, who also caught the tone of his PADD and was watching him.
No matter. A full accounting was about to come out, thought the Romulan, and we will push through some of this. Coupled with my discussion with the Ambassador, this information should prove interesting at the very least. Yes, he thought, curious to have a report on these very Cardassians, yet claim ignorance until we get too close. Steering....always steering.
He looked to the Captain. _________________

Calodan almost imperceptibly shook his head at Uvek falling on his sword. "That man has never lost someone under his command. I need to talk to him later about this."
He looked to the Captain. "Sir, I would like to add that we could have been faster aboard the runabouts. There were several delays while we recalibrated sensors and weapons to the atmosphere, things that could have been setup in advance. It is my opinion that the losses on this mission were not Lt. Uvek's fault. All around, this was a situation that could not have gone any better then it did. We were facing a far larger force on the ground, and even with our advanced technology we were in a dangerous situation. I believe that Lt Uvek and his team should be commended for how well they handled a very dangerous situation." _________________

Brennon nodded, taking in every word that was said... and some of the unsaid ones.
"We were facing a far larger force on the ground, and even with our advanced technology we were in a dangerous situation. I believe that Lt Uvek and his team should be commended for how well they handled a very dangerous situation."
"I understand your desire to take the blame, Mr. Uvek. It's an honor thing. I'm letting you off the hook though, this wasn't your fault. Sloan knew what he was getting into when he put on the uniform. As sad as it is to loose a fine crewmen, you can't let it consume you. You all did very well."
He flashed a smile to his Tactical Officer, knowing how he must be feeling at the moment. Sadly, there wasn't time to linger on the deaths of comrades. The Captain's eyes shifted to Rolen and Kolar, both sitting on the far end of the table opposite each other. Thus far the two aliens had not said anything, not made a sound nor so much as a shifting of the chair. Brennon wasn't quite sure how to take this.
"What I am concerned about is the reports of an apparent Cardassian training camp where they taught the Hukana about various battle styles as well as starship operations... Professor, I'm concerned. I can't say that I understand but..."
The Captain was interrupted by the too-cheerful voice of the Vorta Ambassador.
"If I may, Captain?"
Brennon's eyes moved menacingly towards the Dominion's representative, holding the seemingly unnoticing gaze of the Vorta for several seconds before responding.
"I don't like being interrupted, Mr. Ambassador."
Rolen's smile widened as he stood to speak, his arms held wide in a conciliatory gesture.
"I am sorry, Captain. Rest assured that it won't happen again. I merely wanted to point out to you that I have recovered more data from my files on what may have been proceeding on this world..."
The Captain nodded his head and sat back, fingers bridged and eyes fixed on Rolen. He clearly was expecting this kind of show from the Vorta, though not necessarily quite like this.
"We're all ears."
"Thank you. It appears that the Obsidian Order had planned on using the maliable natures of these... Hukana?"
Kolar nodded as he too watched the Ambassador.
"Yes, that's correct."
"Of course. They intended on using the Hukana as a form of slave labor, much as they did on Bajor during the occupation. A race of creatures to teach and mold of their very own... it reminds me very much of the Founders actually and it seems quite ironic when put in the historical context."
Captain Brennon held up his hand in an attempt to stop Rolen's stream of words from flowing... a herculean task in and of itself.
"Thank you, Ambassador."
The Captain's eyes moved towards Kolar, who's own eyes had gone wide, his gray skin pale in anticipation of the next, obvious question.
"Captain, I did not know anything about this. I am a teacher, an anthropologist. I was tapped for this mission because of my work studying the ruins on Haldir. The others..."
The man was quickly reducing down to stammering, fearful for his very life now that his former crewmate's plans had been revealed.
For his part, the Captain watched him, observing him. After a moment he looked to Koester.
"Mr. Koester, can you please fetch the Counselor for me?" _________________

McTavish had managed to keep his mouth shut during the meeting, something about the whole situation was missing. He just couldnt put his finger on it. It would probably be easier if the insistent buzzing in his head and ears would go away. It was making it very difficult to concentrate. _________________

The doors to the Conference Room opened and Qech walked in. Having not yet had a chance to change her Uniform, the sleeve was still ripped and bloodied, but the skin underneath the tear was clean and healed. She nodded respectfully to each one of her comrades before taking her seat to the Captain's right. For the most part, she looked slightly distracted but that easily could have been passed off as fatigue. This only lasted for a fleeting moment however, as she was sitting straight-backed and attentive in her chair before anyone might have given it a second thought. _________________

Calodan was the first to speak up. "Glad to see you're alright Commander." _________________

"Glad to see you're alright Commander."
Qech smiled. "Thank you, Lieutenant. I could use a Raktajino..." A look crossed her face briefly that came awfully close to a pout "...but otherwise I'm fine." _________________

As they waited for the Counselor to arrive the Captain looked over towards his Executive Officer, noting the expression on her face at the mention of the Klingon Coffee.
"Do you want me to have M'Rowl get you one?" _________________

Qech shook her head. "Oh, um... No Sir. Thank you, but I need to cut down." _________________

Brennon nodded and looked back down the length of the table towards Kolar and Rolen.
The Vorta sat there smiling, it was almost painful how broadly it became, almost as wide as a Denobulan's. Nothing of his disposition or mood could be read by his demeanor.
Professor Kolar sat dumbfounded, still in shock at the news he had just received as well as by the insinuation that he had anything at all to do with the plots of the Obsidian Order.
And so the room continued on, in deafening silence. _________________

"My apologize Captain, but may I be excused for a moment?", McTavish had gone white. _________________
