The house was quiet and dark, the Victorian architecture giving it an eerie look in the moonlight. Normally this house was a comfort to her, familiar, home. Tonight though, something was off... something was... different. Opening her front door, the hinges creaked, something she'd never had happen before. Her father had been a stickler at keeping the old house together... so to have the door creak was disturbing.
"Mom? Dad?" she called out, her voice echoing through the empty house. strange... she thought to herself, someone was almost always home, a light on, something... but this vast emptiness frightened her.
Walking through the house, she couldn't feel anything, not even a whisper of emotion. "Something's wrong...." she whispered to herself and began to run through the house. The hallways she once knew in the dark felt like a maze, endless rooms and staircases that lead to nowhere. Still she couldn't find hide or hair of her family.
Then she heard it. Her mother's voice. Soft... so soft in the distance...
"Mom?!" she cried making her way through the hallways. there aren't this many rooms... she thought to herself as she tried so hard to find her family.
you left us Rea.... her mother's voice echoed in her head
we thought you were dead... her father's voice was thick with tears
why didn't you come home? We needed you...
we needed you... her father's voice overlapped her mothers until the words became a jumble.
The hallway seemed to end abruptly, one signle door ahead of her. She didn't know why, but she was afraid to open it, afraid of what waited behind it... opening the door, she screamed.
**
Screaming as she sat up in her bed, she couldn't get the image out of her mind. Her mother... her father... her infant sister... the image of their lifeless bodies lingered like paused movie. She couldn't breathe... couldn't shake the image from her mind... it was a nightmare, just... a nightmare. She would contact them as soon as she could, but for now, she needed to sleep. Well at least to try to sleep. _________________
