Admiral Becks walked into the teamroom. Rayle stood and called the room to attention (done only when they were not providing Inference support), but Becks waved them off.

"Come on, Lillian," he said with a smile. "You know me better than that." The old man had a soft spot for the petite officer, something of a crush to be sure, but also deep admiration for her abilities. He had appreciated the contributions she had made in identifying and translating several Gamma Quadrant languages. She was something he was going to miss...

"I have words for you, Lillian." He looked at the other three translators, and they quickly left the room, Rayle's uncertain but curious glance following them out. "Sir?" she inquired, once they were alone. Becks motioned to a chair, and eased himself into one, groaning as old men sometimes did when their bones ached.

"Lillian, I have orders here that you are to pack up and join a fleet near Bajor, docked at DS-9. Admiral Croft requested you personally. You are to depart at once, and you won't be coming back." Lillian's eyes widened with the news. "Sir?" she asked again, unable to form a sentence. Becks had been the only officer she had worked under since coming to Babel, aside from her initial orientation work, and she had developed a mutual liking for the older man, seeing him as a fair but tough father figure.

"Top secret, Lillian. That's what I know, that's all they'll tell me. Top Secret and your'e the one they want." He smiled and leaned over to pat her on the knee in fatherly affection. "It won't be so bad, and it's time you grew. You have a remarkable gift, and if I'm right about where I think you're headed, you'll be able to use it fully."

She looked at him with suspicion. "The Gamma Quadrant?" she asked aloud. He just smiled. "This is the call to duty every officer wants, I guess," he replied. "Certainly the one you deserve. You've served me very well since joining this group and your work during the war will not be forgotten. Good luck, Lillian, I shall miss you." With that he stood, shook her hand, and walked out without another glance back, leaving the young human to ponder her future alone.
