Aria fidgeted as she entered the captain's ready room. She always hated this part. Something about the formality required bothered her. She took a deep breath and came to attention before the captain.

"Sir. Lieutenant JG Lioy reporting for duty. I've been reassigned to you and the Hartington. Um...as I'm sure you know." She trailed off and blushed.

Captain Brennon smiled a little at the young officer's awkward introduction. He stood and offered her a hand as he spoke, his voice calm yet commanding.

"Welcome aboard, Lieutenant. I hope that your journey here was peaceful enough."

"Yes, sir." She paused, then added, "Mostly I'm eager to get settled and meet my new family. Um...crewmates, that is. Just in my experience, when you're in an starship with a group of people for an extended period of time you get to know them better than you know a lot of people you're actually related to. It's generally a good thing, I think. I mean, I like it."

You're rambling. Stop it! she ordered herself fiercely.

"Um..." she paused again. "I'm sorry. I don't always talk this much. Just when I'm nervous. Bad habit, I suppose."

The Captain smiled at the new officer's nervousness. Not that he found pleasure in the discomfort of his fellows, simply that it was a quality that most seasoned officers lacked. It was refreshing.

"Its perfectly alright, Lieutenant, I have a few nervous ticks myself. Anyway, I see my crew the same way you describe it, like family. While it makes working with one another much easier, it does make it a little more difficult ordering them into harms way." Brennon shook his head, pushing painful thoughts away as he continued. "In any case, I'm sure you'll fit in just fine here, Lieutenant. I'd direct you to my Yeomen or Commander Qech for your duty roster. Welcome aboard."

"Thank you, sir. I'll report to one of them immediately."
