Character: Captain David Brennon
Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington
Captain Brennon sat in the command chair of the Hartington, standing watch over Alpha Shift when the call from the Station arrived. He sat and listened calmly as Ensign Rayle relayed the information to the crew.
"Understood, Ensign. Inform the Archer that we're en route to Frieka, we'll arrive as soon as possible. Hartington out."
The viewscreen went dark, leaving the vision of the brilliantly streaking star scape at the fore of the command center. The Captain called out his orders to the crew, knowing full well that their actions would be nothing but professional.
"Lieutenant Croft, alter course for the planet Frieka and engage at maximum warp. Mr. Calodan, I need whatever information is available on this world assembled for a briefing in half an hour. Lieutenant Uvek, take us to Yellow Alert."
As the his orders are being carried out, the Captain looked over to his First Officer and shrugged.
"Try not to catch any alien parasites this time." _________________

Qech looked about the bridge from her chair as the crew quickly assembled at their posts to carry out the Captain's orders. As they got ready to set sail once again she found herself feeling surprised that she hadn't spent more time aboard the station. She had been looking forward to stretching her legs, after all. But the place just hadn't felt right. She couldn't put her finger on it, but as she watched the crew bustle about she smiled to herself. Hartington was truly beginning to feel like home.
As she looked back toward the view screen she saw the Captain turn to her and shrug his shoulders.
"Try not to catch any alien parasites this time."
Qech laughed. "No Sir, I think I'll stick with the domestic parasites if it's all the same." _________________

Calodan began searching the database for any information available on the planet. There wasn't much to go on. Time to gather some.
"Lt. Drake," he said turning to face the science officer at the rear of the Bridge, "Please focus the long range sensors on the planet. Anything we can gather will be helpful. The database is pretty sparse when it comes to Frieka." _________________

Lieutenant Uvek, take us to Yellow Alert."
The Romulan tapped a switch and yellow bands appeared on the walls of each deck, accompanied by the signature tone of the alert status. He checked his systems, and looked up.
"Defensive systems ready, Captain. Yellow alert engaged."
He looked back to his research while he had time. The Tal'harton weapons had been fascinating, but at the same time Uvek realized they brought some bad memories to light. He tried to remain objective as flashes of his abuse drove through his defenses. Voss' face hovered before him, malicious and intent, and the words of Rolen hammered into his head. Somehow, though, the configuration on this staff appeared different than that of his memory. The energy output worked much like a stun baton, though at a distance, and the staff carried enough power to be a threat even at minimal settings. In addition, it appeared the staff could double as a communicator, as well as a physically defensive unit.
The hand held units also seemed serve the same purpose, most of the weapons were not designed to kill, though they easily could, but rather to coral, deflect, or incapacitate their targets. Perhaps the religious and converting aspects of the tal were found here in these weapons. No matter. The captain wanted the report, and Uvek would provide it dispassionately. He tapped a switch and sent the information over.
"Report on the tal'harton weapons is in your computer, sir." he reported, then set his sights on the task at hand. _________________

Lt. Drake
Bridge
USS Hartington
Drake, looking at Calodan, nodded and pressed a sequence in on his console. "It'll take a few minutes to get something on the planet, we're still a ways away. Give me five or 10 minutes I should be able to give you some info on the planet, Sir."
Drake turned his attention to his monitors. So much for the dig sight we were going to visit. Maybe someday we'll get back to exploration and meeting new species, if Starfleet didn't piss them all off first by taking over the station so quickly. Drake thought to himself. _________________

USS Hartington
Xavier Croft
Croft smoothly tapped out the commands on his console, the vibrations of the ship changing slightly as the ship accelerated. He had been to sick bay to have his hand looked at, and although it had several stress fractures, they had repaired most of the damage. His hand was a little tender, but not inhibiting. He confirmed their course.
"Course laid in sir, we should be there in about 12 hours sir." _________________

Location: Conference Room, USS Hartington
The Captain sat once more in the briefing room, face to face with his senior staff -- including the newest addition to the Hartington's crew, Lieutenant Lioy from the Diplomatic Corps. As the crew settled in, the Captain looked over to Lieutenants Calodan and Drake, an expectant look on his face.
"Let's hear it, gentlemen." _________________

Calodan started the holoprojector in the center of the table and a 3d representation of the planet in question hovered above the heads of everyone in the room. It showed a lush blue green planet with two major landmasses surrounded by bright cerulean seas.
"Frieka is a Class M planet orbiting on average 96 million kilometers from its star. It has a diameter of about 8000km and an average density of 6230kg/m3. With that data we can estimate gravity to be just above Earth norms, maybe 1.2gs"
He manipulated the controls on his padd and the globe disappeared, replaced by an enlarged map of the two landmasses. Three points were highlighted. "There are 3 major population centers. Two on the larger continent and one on the smaller. Total population is somewhere between 200 and 250 million humanoids. We don't have any information on what the Friekans look like or their culture, so we'll be going in blind on that account. Technologically, they are in an advanced industrial era. They have subspace communications but no evidence of warp drive. There are several primitive artificial satellites in orbit, but they all seem to be scientific or communicative in nature."
He stopped and turned control of the hologram over to Lt. Drake. "Lt. Drake has some interesting information from our long range scans." _________________

Lt. Cory Drake
Location: Conference room, USS Hartington
Drake spoke up, first pulling down on his uniform with the blue collar and then took a drink of water from the cup in front of him ... warm water ... but it soothed his dry throat.
"According to the sensors, the atmosphere is pristine, almost perfectly balanced with foliage growth and large farms. What's odd is that the waters are very clean, even the oceans, which are abound with life."
Drake looked around the conference room to make sure he had the full attention of the crew around him.
"This is the part I'm still digging into, Sir, but according to the early readings the planet's magnetosphere is undergoing a powerful fluctuation. Geo-magnetic shifts are occurring, whic his creating shockwaves and earthquakes throughout. Perhaps this is why they are calling for help. There appear to be huge, almost country-sized magnetic metal plates just under the surface, and laid out in a geo-syncronys pattern all over the planet. I don't know what purupose they serve right now, still researching that, but they are all alighned to a point at the North pole of the planet."
Drake paused slightly to allow everyone to take in what he had just reported, then continued.
"The plates appear to be shifting slightly southward at a slow, but at an unstable rate," Drake said. "That's what I have so far, we're still digging into finding more about these plates." _________________

Uvek nodded as the tech data came out. He looked at the captain.
"There appear to be no vessels in the immediate vicinity, but the Guardian is approaching on the outskirts of the system. The Frieka do not appear to posssess warp technologies of any kind, at least none that are evident. However, we are detecting very strong electromagnetic fluctuations and warp eddies. Their direction indicates that they are extending away from the planet. I have passed this information to sciences for analysis. There is no reason for it that I can see." _________________

Qech listened to the reports, a passive expression on her face. After a brief moment of quiet, she leaned forward. "It's good that we've been able to gather some additional information, but there is one very obvious thing that confuses me: The station is in direct contact with these beings, are they not? It seems to me that we should at least know what we are being called into. These are crucial questions that should have been asked before the Hartington was even called in. I take my hat off to the effectiveness of our crew when it comes to getting answers, well done there, but I don't understand why we're in the dark about this in the first place. The station Commander must have asked. He wouldn't have sent us out without knowing something about the situation. At least, I hope not."
Qech looked at Captain Brennon, her brow furrowed in confusion. Why had they not been told? _________________

Uvek leaned forward. "I can answer that question, commander." He started. "Apparently their transmission was cut short. We detected the transmission roughly the same time it was forwarded from the station with their request to assist. The Frieka must possess limited communication sources - the antiquated satellites, for example. No doubt whatever seismic activity they are encountering is also interfering with their transmissions. The magnetic fluctuations of the planet could easily interfere with their long-range transmissions. I recommend we make contact." _________________
