Sitting in her chair she listened to the crew's opinions and had to gaurd herself against the overwhelming range of emotions that were thrashing through the room. Anger, frustration, irratation, fear, impatience. Some days her amplified senses made her life harder to live. Taking a deep breath she tried to follow the conversation and wait until she had something to add.

Qech listened quietly as the arguments bounced across the room like a rouge racquetball. Everyone had valid points, some she agreed with more than others, but there was one thing missing...

"Before we continue the debate on what to do, or what not to do... I would like very much to hear what actually happened while we were planet-side". She let slip an amused smile. "At least it sounds like a riveting tale".

She sat forward. "I would like to add some clarification to a few things first, however. Firstly, according to the Professor's story, the distress signal was activated as a general distress call immediately before the crash. Not after. Second, if his story is a farce, he has gone to some very great, and unhealthy, lengths to back it up. Cadet Azmay took a medical scan while he was treating him. I've seen these scans, and they are not pretty. Based on the degree of muscle and bone loss he has suffered, this man has been deprived of basic nutrients- nutrients that are not overly abundant in field rations- for several years. Five would be a good estimate. To say nothing of the arrow he took to his midsection during his escape. All of this in the event that a Federation Starship may pass through one day? As I said, if this is a trap, it is a very elaborate one. I don't think even the Obsidian order has that kind of time on their hands".

She sat back slightly. "Now, if someone could please clarify what happened while we were away?"

Calodan leaned back in his chair and listened to the impassioned discussion going on around him. He had already made his opinion clear and joining in the discussion wasn't going to help things.

"Now, if someone could please clarify what happened while we were away?"

"Yes Commander, I have a detailed report right here." Calodan handed her a PADD across the table. "Shortly after you landed, we made efforts to maintain a transporter lock on the away team. The first step in this involved launching a series of atmospheric probes into the atmosphere and then the Runabout Williamette. While in the atmosphere, the Williamette suffered damage to an alien vessel that had, to that point, remained hidden in this planet's interference. The Hartington moved in to tractor them to safety and attempt to make contact with the surface. As we did so, an alien vessel, belonging to the Tal'harton warped into the system and assumed a hostile stance."

Calodan paused to let the information sink in to those who had not been there first hand.

"Hartington made maneuvers to counter the threat of the Tal'harton and to cover your ascent, that was the nadion cloud you encountered on your way up. The Tal'harton have an undiscovered transporter technology that can punch through our shields without trouble. They boarded the ship and Security was able to round them up. After a brief fire fight, they Tal'harton backed down and we returned the prisoners we had taken. "

McTavish smiled and said, " If the away team scans support the professors story I definitely retract my objections. The only question that remains for me is how many of the Tal'harton may be in the area and if any of our actions from this point on will cross the Prime Directive."

With the heated conversation going on, it had taken awhile for him to notice the strange mind that was in the room. He glanced around, letting his defenses down despite himself. Although he could sense nothing of the thoughts or feelings coming from the mind, it was still like a beacon, once he had noticed it he couldn't steer his thoughts away. After a moment he settled on a female medical officer that looked slightly uncomfortable. He concentrated on her for a moment, then projected:

Hello. I didn't realized there were any telepaths on the ship.

With a frown at the projected thought in her head she looked in the direction of Lt Croft. While keeping her ears open to the conversation happening in the room, she narrowed her attention to the Lieutenant.

Greetings Lieutenant. Nice to see another on the ship.

With a slight nod, she offered him a soft smile and tried to focus on the conversation again, albeit she was feeling a bit lost.

Croft was surprised by the strength of the woman's mind. He smiled back,

My first guess is Betazoid, but somethings.... He struggled for the correct word, different doesn't quite cover it. He absentmindedly rubbed his temple.

Qech accepted Calodan's report with a grateful smile and a nod of thanks. She immersed herself in looking over the contents on the PADD as the debate continued. She couldn't help but feel a little sick at the thought of yet another hostile boarding of the Hartington.

First the Breen, now these 'Tal'harton'. Is there a 'kick me' sign on the back of this ship that I'm not aware of?

While still focused on the conversation between the crew regarding the mission, she split her attention to reply to Croft.

You would be correct, in both points.

she glanced back at him for a moment.

I would suggest another time for that discussion though.

Croft smiled slightly to himself, then forced himself to pay attention to the briefing. He watched Qech study the PADD in front of her, she seemed young for a first officer, but that was by no means unprecedented in Starfleet. In fact, Croft hoped to join that club in the not to distant future, minds wandering again he chided himself.

Kantu watched as the Commander studied the PADD. He had been fortunate enough to run into Lieutenant Uvek prior to the meeting and had already been briefed on what had happened. He knew most of what was on the PADD already. He waited for the Commander to finish for the conversation to continue.

Doctor Kiv sat forward, PADD in in front of her to give her report.

"I concur with Commander Qech's conclusions about Professor Kolar. He's suffered from extreme malnutrition. It's likely that, had we not rescued him when we did that he would not have survived another year on this world. It may be at the very edge of the Class-L spectrum, but it's still very much hostile to most forms of life as we know it."

She paused, her eyes settling onto Koester for a moment. If anyone had a reason to hate the Cardassians, someone like Kiv did. The oppression of her people by the Cardassians is the stuff of horrid legends throughout the Alpha Quadrant and yet she seemed perfectly at ease giving succor to those marooned on the world below.

"His companions, however, are another story. As soon as they left the atmosphere they began to exhibit early symptoms of space sickness. Nausea, migraines and the like. In the short time they've been aboard the Hartington their symptoms have increased by an order of magnitude. Heart rates have skyrocketed, blood pressure is dangerously high. Their bodies are rejecting most treatments I can administer. It is my medical opinion that keeping them in space will kill them."

Lieutenant Ghan sat up as the Doctor finished her presentation, having waited in an uncharacteristic show of politeness. He set his hairy hands palm down on the conference table and half stood, in order to place more emphasis on his forthcoming statement.

"I can understand the desire to ensure no harm comes to the creatures, but the fact of the matter is that we can do little to aid them. The Cardassians have become ingrained into their society... Commander Qech's own report states that they seemed almost dependent on Professor Kolar during the shuttle flight. I cannot see how anything we do will fix this issue. Beyond that, the Hartington still has significant structural damage to be repaired. At the moment I cannot safely authorize the strain on the ship of any Warp flight above 3.5, at least not until we've secured some of the breaches with something a little more than hopes and force fields."

Captain Brennon listened intently to the reports of each of his Officers, giving everything said a great deal of thought. As the bickering died down he started to speak.

"We didn't contaminate their culture, the Cardassians did, but that doesn't mean we're just going to sit idly by and let them destroy this world. Lieutenant Ghan, double time work on sealing those breaches, once we're safely able to attain at least Warp 6, I want to know about it."

The Tellarite nodded and noted down some information on his PADD as the Captain continued.

"I want to be clear about this next part. Make no mistakes, we are still on a rescue mission. We cannot reverse the damage done to the indigestion culture, but we can lessen any future impact. So, what I want now is two fold. We are sending in another landing party. With our new "friends" out of the area, travel to and from the surface should be simpler. Our primary objective is to neutralize the radiation coming from the wreckage of the Cardassian vessel."

At that, Lieutenant Ghan sat forward again and spoke aloud, interrupting the Captain.

"I believe I may have a solution there sir."

"Enlighten us, Mr. Ghan."

"A tractor beam, Captain. I believe that the Runabouts working in concert can lift the ship high enough into the atmosphere for the Hartington, while in a low orbit itself, to latch onto and lift it the rest of the way back into space. Once it's out of the planet's gravity we can scuttle it with no problem."

Captain Brennon nodded approvingly, Ghan may be abrasive but he was a damn fine Engineer.

"That settles one issue. Our other objective will be the Cardassians. We cannot violate their will to stay on this planet if they so choose... but we will not allow them to harm these people any further. I want to move in and give them the chance to return to the Alpha Quadrant with us. Should they refuse we will remove their weapons from their possession, along with any other invasive technology that they have..." he held up a hand before anyone could object. "The moral and legal issues aside, I cannot justify leaving them with the means to hurt these people. I am more than willing to accept the ramifications for these actions and any objections will be noted in my log."

He sat back and looked to each of his Officers and waited for their reply.

Kantu sat back and nodded silently. Sounds like a reasonable solution to an unreasonable problem...

Qech nodded her approval of the mission. "I agree Sir. As far as solutions go, I think ridding them of their weapons is the closest thing we have to one. Although, that still leaves the Hukana. I'd never be able to forgive myself if we allowed them to die aboard the Hartington. If need be, I can work with Dr. Kiv to attempt to find a medical solution. I think Cadet Azmay would be of help there as well. He does have a unique point-of-view after all. If we can't come up with anything there, the only other option is to bring them back to the planet. And of course, that raises just as many doubts about their survival, given the influence of the Cardassians..."

"I would be willing to assist as well, with your permission, of course."
