Lieutenant Ghan snorted by way of an acknowledgment and began the process of bringing the downed ship back into space. The manuver itself took nearly a half hour, slowly coordinating the ascent of both Runabouts with the power of the Tractor Beams all the while correcting for any wind that may have the strength to knock the ships out of place.

Eventually, the Runabouts came into position and Ghan tapped his combadge.

"Ghan to Hartington, we're ready and in position for you to initiate your Tractor Beam."

The Captain's voice called out in response from the com.

"Understood Mr. Ghan, activating Tractor Beam."

From inside the Runabouts they could see the cerulean beam of light descended from the heavens and latching onto the wreckage. The Engineer cut power from both Tractor Beams and sat back.

"Tractor Control returned to Columbia, Hartington has the ball."

As all of this was going on, Chief Blair sat at one of the rear consoles working out the transporter issues that may come up. Unfortunately, she found one.

"Lieutenant Calodan, we may have an issue with the transport. I believe there are transport inhibitors in place around the Hukana village where our targets are located."

Uvek had slid the screen isolators from the wall at his station just behind the cockpit. He read the reply from Koester with satisfaction, then deleted it and turned to his men.

"The vessel is in the hands of the Hartington." He said. "Standby to reenter the atmosphere and deploy. Mr. Smith and Mr. Mavers, you know your position, Mr. Sloan, you will hold 10 paces behind the main body. Mr. Thompson, you will hold 10 paces to the left. I will be beside Commander Qech. At the first sign of trouble, we will regroup and ensure the away team is covered. Any questions?"

There were none, and the Lt. turned his attention again to the screen before him, anticipation running through his veins.

"Lieutenant Calodan, we may have an issue with the transport. I believe there are transport inhibitors in place around the Hukana village where our targets are located."

Calodan checked the sensors. "It looks like you're correct Chief. This mission may have just gotten a little harder." He ran the scan a second time to be sure then opened the comm line to the Columbia.

"Williamette to Columbia. Commander Qech, Chief Blair just located a series of transport inhibitors in place around the village. We're going to put our heads together to try and come up with a solution, but the transporters may be out of the question."

He turned in his chair to face Chief Blair. "Alright Chief, its time for us to earn the yellow we wear. We need to come up with a way to break through that field, otherwise this plan is become far more difficult on the away team. I dont want them walking into that situation without at least the ability to beam them out." The Chief nodded and began working and Calodan did the same.

Mavers looked over at Smith, and saw him sit up, and take on an almost catatonic stare.

Smith was going over the plans in his head. In the event that things went wrong, he wanted to be prepared.

"Mr. Smith," said Mavers, "we're touching down. Should I get our weapons together?"

No, Mavers... I thought it might be a good idea to walk out the door and moon everyone." Sarcasm seemed to be Ted's unconscious response to what he deemed a stupid question. "I'm sorry Mavers... I didn't mean to snap at you. Go ahead and get the rifles, and meet me at the muster point.

"Williamette to Columbia. Commander Qech, Chief Blair just located a series of transport inhibitors in place around the village. We're going to put our heads together to try and come up with a solution, but the transporters may be out of the question."

Qech listened to the transmission, biting her lip as she ran through the emergency exit strategy in her head. In truth, the thought of having to leave the surface via transporter terrified her. The vivid memories of the transporter accident that killed her third host- Braxlin Qech- had resulted in a severe, albeit well-hidden, phobia of the technology. She knew the chances of any such thing happening again were minute... but still...

The thought shook her out of her morbid reverie. Transporter exit or not, that option had to remain on the table for the safety of her crew. Facing half-starved, fully-armed obsidian order operatives, no matter how few, with no plan B was simply not an option. But when she considered the weapons, a thought occurred to her; she opened a Channel to the willamette.

"Lt. Calodan... Now, I'm no engineer, but...What's stopping us from targeting the inhibitors with the runabout's weapons? They should be giving off a significant enough energy source to get a good lock on them."

Yeah, okay... So she wasn't an engineer. But she did know how to blow stuff up.

He paused for a second. He had coming up with complex ideas involving sympathetic interference and proton beam collisions..and the easiest solution had been there all along. Sometimes, it was good to have non-engineers around.

"Nothing at all sir. Give me a minute or so and I'll plot out all the energy sources and send over a firing solution. We should be able to take them out in short order." He suspended the comm channel and went to work. With some help from the other engineers on board, they determined that they would only have to take out 11 of the 30 inhibitors for the field to collapse.

He opened the comm channel again "Sending over a firing solution now Columbia. We're a go on your mark Commander."

Uvek heard the chatter over the comms and instantly a warning flag went up. He entered the cockpit and leaned over to Commander Qech.

"Ma'am," he started respectfully. "Our mission is to isolate those Cardassians and ensure that they do not escape. Then we negotiate with them on remaining on the planet without their precious technological advances. However, if you begin firing particle weapons or torpedoes onto unknown energy sources, you will not only give away our presence, but you will allow them to escape."

He shifted into a kneeling position. "I strongly recommend you place our security team on the ground PRIOR to firing. You can do so quietly enough to allow us to surround the area of the strongest interference. That's where the Cardassians are sure to be. Once you have fired, we will move in quickly, using the confusion as cover. I believe that will give us the element of surprise and greatly increase our success."

He watched the commander closely, half expecting to be shot down, but knowing that tactically it was sound suggestion.

Qech sent a quick communication to Caldon: "Standby Lieutenant," and swiveled around in her chair to face Uvek. She nodded in agreement.

"I think it's a good plan. It will also give Lt. Kantu a chance to do some close-range scans to make doubly sure the field is down before you move in. We'll come forward with the negotiations once the site is secure."

She paused for a moment, thinking. "Bear in mind, I'm using the term 'negotiations' in the loosest possible way. If they've gone through all the trouble of setting up transport inhibitors then they have no desire to be moved anywhere. We're here to make it clear to them that we're not offering a choice. Your initial show of force will help enforce that idea nicely." She smiled. "Good work, Lieutenant."

Qech tapped her combadge. "Lt. Calodan, change of plans. Lt. Uvek has come up with a strategy for securing the Cardassians on the surface for when you take down the inhibitors..." Qech went over the plan with Calodan, letting Uvek fill in the blanks where necessary. "I'll contact you when the team in in place, and again after Lt. Kantu has finished his scans."

McTavish noted how much smoother the flight through the atmosphere was this time around. Still, every few minutes he scanned the hull for any signs of Tetryon radiation. McTavish watched the sensors for anything out of the ordinary and did a preliminary scan of the wreckage as it was lifted to the Hartington.
After a few minutes of trying to figure out what was nagging at him, McTavish's brain finally clicked.
"LT Calodan, A moment sir? I scanned the wreckage as we lifted it into orbit. It took me a bit, but there are 2 spiral-wave disruptors and the aft disruptor wave cannon missing from the ship. Its hard to tell if they were disintegrated in the crash or if they were removed after. It looks like one of the impulse engines was also removed."
McTavish smiled. "We had better warn the Columbia that things could get bumpy if the inhabitants have figured out how to point and shoot any of those disruptors."

"Roger that commander. Williamette holding position for your go".

Calodan turned to the rest of the crew on the runabout. "Alright people, lets be ready to go on a moments notice. I want to be able to take these transport inhibitors down and then initiate the beamouts within 5 seconds. Think we can do that Chief?" She nodded at him and turned to her console. "Good. Lets see if this away mission can go a little less bumpy then the last."

"Roger that Ensign. Transmit your findings to the Columbia immediately. If the Cardassians have figured out how to convert those disruptors for ground based firing, we could be in for a bit of a nasty surprise."

Uvek nodded to Commander Qech and left the cockpit. He walked back to the runabouts off ramp, and opened his security locker, retrieving his Teral'n as he spoke.

"Change in plans, gentlemen," he said, strapping the quiver-like holder of his ancient but deadly weapon on his back and adjusting it, so the handle protruded over his left shoulder.

"We are going to land a discreet distance from the source of energy signatures. We believe the Cardassians have developed transport inhibitors, and possibly ground-based anti-ship weaponry. We are going to divide into teams, and surround the source of greatest power. The Columbia and Willamette will then attack the energy sources. During the confusion, we will penetrate the area and capture the Cardassians." he looked solemnly from face-to-face.

"I don't need to remind you to be careful, but I will remind you that we want the Cardassians ALIVE. Stun only, wide-field dispersal if you must, but be sure to watch your back. Smith, you and Mavers break right. Sloan and Thompson left, and I'll take up the middle with Lt. Kantu. When we are in position, we will spread out 5 meters apart and move in to the center. Now, stand by."

He moved to the hatch, and prepared to open it on Qech's order.

Qech looked at the information as Lt. Calodan sent it her way. "Thanks for the warning. I'll try to get a lock on to some of the weapons while you target the inhibitors. In the mean time Lt. Uvek and co. will have to make due with caution."

She finished settling the ship down and turned to face the security team, who were waiting by the hatch for the word 'go'.

"Just so we're clear, gentlemen: You need to set up a perimeter before those inhibitors are destroyed. Lt. Calodan and I will do what he can about those weapons, but caution is strongly advised. I want to be able to speak to the Cardassians before either of them are rounded up; give them a chance to come willingly if possible, so just keep them from running." She nodded toward the crew. "Good luck. Let me know when you're in place and we'll start the fireworks."

Uvek smiled at the Commander. "Don't worry, Ma'am," he said, "We'll take care of it. You heard her men, hold until she clears us!" He opened the hatch and pressed down the ramp, followed closely by his team.

"Lt. Kantu, please take the lead, I'm right beside you." He thumbed the power grid on his phaser rifle until it read 3/4 and waited for the Science officer.

Thompson and Sloan disappeared into the rough and rocky terrain, all ready to hit their mark, tricorders poised along with their weapons. They were 1/2 kilometer from their goal.

The Columbia lifted off behind them, and they were left in silence. Watching Kantu take bearings, Uvek took a moment to look around. The team was gone, moving with military precision. So far, so good...

(OOC: Kantu has sent me a message, he's having some IRL issues and may not be able to post for a little while. We're going to have to retcon something here to make the scene work. Mr. Uvek, perhaps Crewman Smith can take point.)

ACTION

As the security force moved into position, Transporter Chief Blair aboard the Williamette continued to scan the area surrounding the Hukana Village. She watched as the security team moved into the area of effect for the Transport Inhibitors. Reporting to both Lieutenant Calodan next to her and to Commander Qech via her combadge she called out and update.

"We're loosing transporter lock on the security team, sirs. We should be good to open fire on the energy signatures."

Lieutenant Ghan eyed the ship's sensors briefly and looked towards McTavish

"Ensign, train your scanners on the center of the village. I'm reading energy sources there that are not consistent with any known transporter technology. It could be your disruptors"

Location: Main Bridge, USS Hartington

Captain Brennon eyed the viewscreen, watching the brownish orb floating below them. He couldn't help but think of other desolate worlds he had seen in his years of service. His thoughts were brought back into the here and now as Ambassador Rolen stepped out onto the Bridge and approached the command chair.

"Captain, may I please have a word with you. It is urgent and very vital."

Brennon looked over to the Vorta Ambassador, saw the necessity in his eyes, saw how he fidgeted with his PADD. I've never heard of a Vorta fidgeting before... he thought to himself. wonder what's got him spooked? He decided it would be best to hear the man out.

"Sure Ambassador, let's hear what you've got."

Rolen's head inclined and he brought the PADD up, handing it to the Captain.

"I've just finished speaking with our newest passenger. He was telling me about the mission his vessel was on, the names and nature of the crew... the survivors of the crash. I brought with me a portion of the Dominion's wartime database, severely censored you understand, but I was able to research the names of the two remaining Cardassians..."

The Captain's attention had been grabbed and he sat a little straighter. When the Ambassador didn't immediately continue he cleared his throat.

"You have my undivided attention, Ambassador."

Rolen seemed a little shocked, seemingly not understanding his breach of decorum. He blinked a few times.

"Of course, Captain, I apologize. You may have already deduced that these Cardassians were members of the Obsidian Order, luck seems to have played a cruel joke on us this time. What Professor Kolar was not readily aware of was that the Order seems to have sent them here on purpose. I believe that the Order Agents aboard this vessel purposefully crashed here. My information doesn't seem to have an answer as to why, sadly, but I will continue to search."

Captain Brennon nodded and scratched at his beard.

"That is very interesting information, Ambassador. Thank you very much. Continue your research and get me whatever information you may have."

Rolen nodded and exited the Bridge. The Captain turned and looked to Koester at Tactical.

"Mr. Koester, please raise the Columbia, I need to speak with Commander Qech."

"Thank you for the update Chief."

Calodan opened the commline to the Columbia. "Commander, Chief Blair just informed me that we've lost transporter lock on the away team. We're ready to start taking out the inhibitors on your mark."
