Uvek moved up the center of the group, squatting and pulling out his tridcorder. Readings indicated his team was spread out, Smith and Mavers were in place, Thompson and Sloan were now spreading out several meters away. He touched his combadge...

"Mr. Smith, are you in position? If so do you have eyes on the center of the village?" He shifted down behind a large boulder, and waited.

"We are looking for signs of the Cardassians, and anything that will be a danger to our ships or ourselves."

"Aye Chief. I have a sensor lock on the largest power source in the village. Ill transfer the info to the Columbia. Im also reading several power sources through out the village. Most notably something very large in the exact center of the village but buried under 10 meters of rock and the signature is being muted by something. Most likely the rock itself. Im having a rough time keeping a lock."

The Willamette shook for a second as it passed through its first real bit of turbulence. McTavish compensated quickly and with a final shudder the Willamette calmed.

"Sir, Im not completely sure but I think we are being targeted. The lock is very fine and intermittent. Almost as though someone on the surface with a hand held targetter was trying to track us. I can try and get a lock on their beam and send a high frequency sensor pulse down the beam and try and scramble the system. The problem is that for a couple seconds they will have a definite lock on us and will be able to fire."

"Hold off on that Ensign. I don't want to draw an fire before we're sure what we're up against." Calodan paused to make sure the shields were ready to raise at the first sign of an energy discharge.

"For now Ensign, I'd settle for some evasive maneuvers to prevent a lock if possible."

He opened the comm channel to the Columbia again. "Commander, Ensign McTavish things that someone on the surface is trying to target us. We are taking evasive action for now to try and prevent them from gaining a lock, but I'm not sure how well that is going to work. I strongly suggest we take out those inhibitors, perform our transport procedure then raise shields and gain altitude as soon as possible. If the Cardassians have managed to convert the disruptors for ground based operation, we could be facing some serious firepower."

"Aye aye, Sir. Initiating random evasive maneuvers. Ill try too keep things from being too erratic so we can maintain senors locks of our own."

Smith swallowed hard. It had been a while since he was in as hostile an environment as this.

"Smith to Lt. Uvek, myself and Mavers are in positon. Let the boss know we're hunkered down and waiting for the show to start."

Qech silently swore to herself before tapping her combadge. "The team is closing position, just waiting for conformation from Lt. Uvek. The second I get it, take those things down. I'll take out the heavy artillery on the ground. In the meantime, try to stay in one piece. We can't return fire without risking hitting the security team, the targets are too deep inside the field."

She realigned the Columbia as smoothly as possible and was just setting to work on her target locks when she received an incoming transmission from the Hartington. She switched on the Columbia's comm system and double-tasked the flight control and target systems as she responded.

"This is Qech. Go ahead, Hartington..."

Uvek crested a small hill...Interference from the atmosphere must be interfering with communications here, he thought.

His tricorder showed the team was spread out. He could only hope they were ready. As yet he had no visual on the center of the village due to the rock formations. Smith, Mavers, Thompson and Sloan were showing on his tricorder as in position. The team had spread out enough to cover the 5 main points from the village on the ground. There was little chance anyone would slip out without coming between at least 2 of the team.

He had to do something. He tapped his comlink. "Uvek to Columbia. In position!"

He grasped his rifle closer, then adjusted his Teral'n to make it easier to pull from its scabbard. One, two shots at most, he thought, before the phasers need recalibration. Let's hope that's enough.

The Captain's voice called over the Commander's combadge. He sounded concern but he was ready for business.

"I've just had an interesting chat with Mr. Rolen. It seems that your intended targets may have put themselves here on purpose. What that may be we don't yet know, but I advise you to proceed with extreme caution."

ACTION

On the surface, Lieutenant Uvek's team sat, waiting, watching. The wind rustled the nearby trees, thin, dry branches scraping together creating an altogether tense and spooky mood. The Romulan's tricorder beeped to life as it detected the approach of three Hukana...

Aboard the Columbia, Commander Qech sat alone in the cockpit, the rest of her team on the surface. Just moments before she received the all clear from Lieutenant Uvek, the Runabout's sensors cried out to her. The cool and collected voice of the onboard computer spoke up, giving words to the alarm's warning.

"Warning, energy discharge detected. Incoming blast."

Nearby, on the Williamette , Chief Blair finished plotting out the last of the targets and transfered the information to McTavish's console.

"Looks like they've got a few extra units that we didn't know about... can you hit them all?"

"Sensor detecting an energy discharge on the surface." He paused to check his sensor data then slapped the comm line. "Columbia, they have you targeted. Evasive manuevers!"

He shifted in his chair "Ensign McTavish, take out the transport inhibtors furthest from where Lt. Uvek's team put down. Chief Blair, as soon as you have a lock, initiate our transport sequence. Lt Ghan, I need your help boosting power to the sensors so we can make sure that we can get transporter locks as soon as possible."

After a quick check of the sensors, he swore under his breath. "Incoming disruptor fire. Evasive pattern Beta 3. Raise the shields, transporters are going to have to wait." Calodan slid from his chair to the Tactical station and began trying to target the disruptor cannons.

"Warning, energy discharge detected. Incoming blast."

Qech quickly took evasive action to avoid the oncoming blast. The commands were activated only seconds before Calodan's message rang through the comm system.

"Columbia, they have you targeted. Evasive manuevers!"

One right after the other, a third message came through:

"Uvek to Columbia. In position!"

Qech struggled to keep her targets locked as the runabout rocked and swayed against the winds of the passing energy discharge. Even as she fought to steady the shuttle she sent a hurried message to Calodan.

"The team is in position! Take them out!"

She knew a second blast wouldn't be far behind, and as long as she kept the shuttle steady and locked on, there was little chance that they would miss a second time. Taking her window of opportunity, she opened fire on the cannons.

Calodan worked the tactical console and fired a series of phaser blasts and micro-photon torpedoes and one by one watched the transport inhibitors power signatures blink offline.

"Inhibitors down, begin transporting as soon as you can get a lock Chief. Remember, we're just looking for a microsecond or two of dematerialization and then you can cut the sequence. The resulting power surge ought to fry any circuitry connected to the power source."

The ship rocked as the Williamette took fire from the ground based disruptors.

"Ensign McTavish, change to evasive pattern Charlie 7. Lt Ghan, please assist Chief Blair. As soon as you two have run the transporter sequence, signal Lt. Uvek on the ground." As he gave orders, Calodan fired two torpedoes at a disruptor bank that had just come online on a hill outside the village and was rewarded with an explosion and a lack of disruptor where there once was one.

Uvek looked briefly at his tricorder reading. Three lifeforms identified now as Hukana were closing on his position, spread slightly apart but close enough to be targets. He tapped his combadge once again, hearing the tone of a clear connection this time.

"Uvek to Smith. As soon as the runabouts open fire, move in!" He then shifted his position behind a cluster of nearby scrubs and stone and laid his rifle down. These ones should have no advanced weapons, his tricorder wasn't detecting them, and the Romulan was itching for a fight.

He crouched, pulling the ornate carved rod weapon. The Teral'n had a rounded handle of about 2 foot in length, transitioning to a flat headed weapon rimmed on both sides with razor-like blades on the edges and top. When used side on it was a devastating cutting weapon. However, flat side out, it almost operated as hardened club. That was what Uvek counted on. The Hukana were scouting, no doubt security for the village.

Uvek waited until they passed; two in front and one trailing slightly behind. As soon as the first two passed his hiding spot he moved. He leaped out over the rocks and scrub, landing directly behind the two and in front of their comrade. As he landed he was spinning the Teral'n over his head and brought the flat side hard against the head of the trailing Hukana. Caught by surprise he fell in a crumpled heap without so much as a sound.

Now there were two. Uvek crouched as they spread out, and moved to him. He spun the Teral'n in front of him, getting their focus on it. They moved in cautiously, pulling arrows from their quivers and loading their bows. That's when Uvek struck. He threw the Teral'n at them both, spinning it horizontally between them and causing them to flinch. The Romulan drew his handheld phaser and fired. One Hukana flew backwards, unconscious, the other fired in haste, but the arrow went just over Uvek's shoulder. He dove on the ground, firing again. Behind him he could hear the explosions in the village, the sound of phasers firing, shouting, the distinct sound of a disruptor and destruction.

Time to get there. Retrieving his weapon, he struck out in a run, hoping he was not too late.

McTavish punched the shields to full power as he set the Willamette into evasion pattern beta. McTavish could see the disruptor blasts rise from the planets surface, one coming so close to the Columbia that her shields went opaque.

McTavish shifted the ship into pattern Charlie. McTavish watched the data scroll across his screen when something caught his eye. "SIR! These disruptor blasts are showing less than 50% power out put. We could take multiple hits before they could get through our shields. Something is.." The command deck of the Willamette went red as the Navigation Sensors detected something coming fast. "Lieutenant we have three incoming objects from bearing 226 true, 10 km out. Sir they are reading as, ummm well, Mark VI photon torpedoes."

"Torpedoes? Where did those come from?"

Calodan punched a command and activated the phasers in point defense mode then opened the comm channel again. "Columbia, 3 incoming torpedoes from from bearing 226 true, 9.2 km out. I have set our phasers to point defense mode. Your orders Commander?"

Lieutenant Ghan tapped at his console, a quizzical look on his porcine face. He quickly checked and rechecked his data and then turned to the Lieutenant.

"Mr. Calodan, re-tune the sensors to the following frequency," he taps his control, sending the data to Calodan's console. As the Operations Officer does so, Ghan motioned out of the cockpit's main windows.

"They must have rigged some sort of ghost network from whatever tech they pulled out of the wrecks..."

The image of the torpedoes locked onto the Columbia seemingly collided with the lower vessel, passing right through the other Runabout harmlessly.

"Holograms." The Tellarite snorted as he shook his head. "I'll give them credit where it's due... they're clever snakes."
