ACTION

The Cardassians watched the Starfleet Security personnel with a dubious eye. One of them looked to Qech as she approached them, weapon drawn. He shook his head and looked towards his companion, who nodded to him. The lead Cardassian lifted his hands into the air and stepped forward, parting the Hukana like the proverbial Red Sea. He smiled as he called out to the Starfleet Officers.

"Have you come to rescue us, Commander?"

Qech looked to the Cardassian as he stepped forward, setting her jaw and adopting an expressionless stance.

"Rescue would not be the operative word. Indeed that had been our original intention. You fired on us, if you recall. Explain this."

She knew that taking the upper hand was an absolute necessity with all the firepower her team had just disposed of. These people were hardly adrift and waiting for rescue. She showed no sign of pity on her face, but her phaser was set to stun; something the Cardassians would remain blissfully unaware of.

The Cardassian continued to step forward, stopping a few meters away from the Commander. His smile never left his face, and the feeling that he was playing Qech and her team never left their mind.

"Commander, I have to apologize for that. It was a misunderstanding you see. We've been forced to fend for ourselves these past five years. We've become a little... skittish with all of the pressure. We were completely absorbed by our fears. I do hope that your vessels were not damaged or any of your personnel injured in the accident."

The Hukana around them started to get a little jittery themselves as the Cardassian spoke to the strangers. Some of them grasped at their spears while others pulled on bow strings, untrusting eyes moving from alien face to alien face. It was clear that they did not like where this situation was going, not in the least.

Uvek motioned to Thompson, who moved a few paces back and reset his phaser for wide dispersal. He focused his attention on the Hukana.

"Commander I recommend the Hukana drop their weapons as a sign of good faith here." he said quietly to his exec. The Romulan had moved closer to her, and stood tense and ready, watching the Cardassian like a hawk.

Qech watched the Hukana out of the corner of her eye. The situation was getting tense, but she kept her game face on.

"I'd like to say you play the innocent, adrift soldier well Sir. I'd like to, but I can't. Please don't think that we are under some impression that you are harmless scientists wasting away on a class L planet after a nasty accident."

She looked around at the Hukana, and cast a quick glance at Uvek, who had approached her quietly.

"Commander I recommend the Hukana drop their weapons as a sign of good faith here."

She cast her eyes around at the little aliens, feeling sorry that so much damage had been done in such a short time. She looked back to the Cardassian leader with a steely glare.

"Of course, I could always be wrong. You're nothing but innocent bystanders and these are your friends. So please, if you are so very sorry for firing on us, why don't you ask your comrades to drop their weapons?" She could see that the Obsidian operative didn't enjoy being patronized. Cardassians were known for their egos afterall.

After a brief pause and a bit of a stare-down, she continued... "You've done too much damage to their culture already. We came to remove you as a threat. Come quietly, and I assure you a holding cell will employ far more comforts than this planet ever could. Leave the Hukana in peace, if that's even possible anymore."

Calodan was listening to the conversation through the comm line he had left open with Commander Qech.

"Ensign, think you can bring the runabout in to hover, just over there behind the away team and the commander so the Cardassians and the Hukana can see her? I think that ought to paint a rather pretty picture for them."

"Aye Sir" McTavish moved the Willamette into the Lieutenants desired location.

Calodan manipulated the controls that raised the blast screens on the forward portals. "Everyone look serious and menacing. With us floating here, they ought to thing twice before trying anything."

He checked that the phaser settings were set as low as possible, about the same as a very wide blast of light stun from a hand phaser.

"Chief Blair, do you still have a lock on the team?" At her nod, Calodan settled into his chair and let the crew of the Williamette do their respective jobs. "With any luck," he thought to himself, "we'll be back aboard ship in time for a poker game. Sensors show no more energy signatures and the worst the natives can throw at us is arrows and small rocks."

OOC: It's a pity Cadet Azmay is not in this scene, because it's pretty exciting and interesting.

Uvek touched his comlink, turning his back on the Cardassians, but standing close to Commander Qech. Quietly he spoke into his badge.

"Uvek to Willamette. Crewman Sloan is down, a short distance from our location. Please transport him to your vessel immediately. I believe he is dead." He turned back to the group and waited for the typical flash of light to his left.

OOC: sorry all.....edited to correct rank.

OOC: Commander Sloan?

"Chief Blair, please locate Crewman Sloan's commbadge and beam him to the rear compartment." After giving the order, he headed back to the rear and grabbed a medical tricorder from the medkit. As the transporter beam deposited Sloan, he set the tricorder down. The man was definitely dead. One of the arrows had pierced his heart. Calodan reached down and closed the man's eyes, saying an ancient Trill prayer for the dead.

He returned to the flight cabin and hailed the Hartington. "Lt Calodan to Hartington. Crewman Sloan was killed in combat on the ground. We'll be beaming his body directly to sickbay when we are back in transporter range."

Chief Blair nodded and beamed the body of the dead crewman into the Runabout. Shortly thereafter one of the Transporter operators aboard Hartington replied affirmatively.

"We're standing by for transport, Lieutenant."

On the ground the Cardassians looked to each other, exchanging a defeated look. The lead Cardassian shook his head and tossed his disruptor pistol to the ground as his arms raised above the head. His partner did the same. Both seemed crushed at the very prospect of surrender.

Apparently, so did the Hukana. As the Cardassians began to step towards the Starfleet personnel, the Hukana gathered around began to chitter and squeak. After a moment one seemed agitated, unable to control himself. He let loose an arrow shaft into the air.

It seemed to hang for an eternity before the sound came, the soft, wet sound of stone and wood on flesh. The lead Cardassian couldn't seem to recognize what had happened to him, his hands moving to the shaft protruding from his chest.

As he collapsed to his knees his partner's eyes went wide and she made a mad dash towards the Away Team. Before she had run three meters she had as many arrows lodged in her abdomen. The Hukana had turned on their benefactors and had begun to attack the Away Team!

Arrows flew through the air, spears jabbed out at the Starfleet Personnel. Crewmen Smith's eyes widened in pain as an arrow lodged itself into the man's thigh. Crewman Thompson fell to the tackle of no less than five of the diminutive aliens. Lieutenant Uvek was fending well for himself, blade in hand after his Phaser had failed to fire. As for Commander Qech, the sleeve of her uniform was torn, thanks to a graze from a Hukana arrow. The blood trickled down her arm as she prepared to make her next decision.

The chaos unraveled before her eyes in what seemed like slow-motion. A sudden pain bloomed in her upper arm and she felt the warm sensation of blood running down the inside of her sleeve. Qech wasted no time and braced herself for what she knew she had to do. Taking a sharp breath, she quickly tapped her combadge.

"Qech to Willamette! Three to beam out! Now!"

"You heard the Commander, get them out of there Chief!"

The transporter hummed to life and the away team was transported off the surface, greeted by Lieutenants Calodan and Ghan armed with medkits and tricorders.

Qech felt the familiar, and unpleasant sensation of the transporter envelope her, and the interior of the Willamette came into view almost instantly. Her heart was racing, and her face was as white as a sheet. She could feel cold sweat trickling down the back of her neck, which was an odd sensation next to the warm blood running down her left arm. She staggered shakily, reaching out to support herself with the first thing she came into contact with. She swallowed, and tried to steady herself against the overwhelming anxiety that raced through her.

I really hate those things...
